Athens: More than a Summer Holiday Destination

While the Greek islands are popular for summer holidays, Athens is a year-round destination. So even if you’re flying to Greece just for the island sun, here are a few reasons to spend time in the capital too!

    The Acropolis

Even if you’re not a fan of history, some of the ancient sites you just have to visit — and this is probably the most famous one in Athens. The Acropolis is an ancient city at the top of a hill, and here you’ll see the Parthenon, a temple built almost 2,500 years ago. It’s worth climbing up, too, for the views — of the sea, mountains and Lycabettus Hill rising up between the city’s apartment buildings.

The streets of Plaka and Monastiraki

If you still have energy after climbing the Acropolis, take a walk around the nearby area. Yellow and white buildings look down on the smooth stone streets of the area known as Plaka. Stop at the gift shops or take a break from the sun with a Greek coffee or a traditional meal in one of the local restaurants — or tavernas. Walk on and you’ll soon find yourself in the narrower streets of Monastiraki with its flea markets on all sides, giving you a real Greek experience.

    Panathenaic Stadium

Close to the center of town and not far from the National Garden is the ancient Panathenaic Stadium, which was restored for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It’s also the place where the Athens marathon finishes every year, so if you like running, you too could feel like an Olympic winner!

    The coast

When you’re in the center of Athens, it doesn’t feel much like a coastal city, but the sea is just a few minutes’ drive away. The beaches get better the further south you go, or you can walk by the boats in the shadow of the stylish new opera house.

    1. Which of the following places is a must-go if you want to see ancient relics?

    A. The Plaka. B. The Acropolis. C. Panathenaic. D. Monastiraki.

    2. What can you find in the streets of Monastiraki?

    A. Gifts shops and Greek café with traditional meals.

    B. Narrow streets with local restaurants and souvenir stores.

    C. An outdoor market where second-hand goods are sold at low prices.

    D. Yellow and white buildings looking down on the smooth stone streets.

    3. Where should you go to find Athens’ best beaches?

    A. In the city center of Athens B. Opposite the new opera house.

    C. Driving away from the country D. Going south from the city center.

    B

“You should get a cat, ”my therapist(治疗专家)said. “A cat?” I couldn’t even look after myself. . I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a feline (猫科的)friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a fix for the fact that I couldn’t leave the house without bursting into tears.

When my partner and I found Cinnamon, her adoption profile made her out as the perfect kitten. We filled out the paperwork and prepared for her arrival.

When she came home, it became increasingly obvious that Cinnamon didn’t understand “no”, “stop it” or “don’t do that”. She was the worst cat I’ve ever owned. I was beginning to doubt my therapist’s advice.

After visiting our vet, she concluded that Cinnamon just wanted our attention. She fought tooth and nail to get a bite of our meals. She’d fearlessly lick sharp knives when left unattended for a split second. Cinnamon stole my heart with her bravery and kept me busier than I’d ever expected.

We decided to start taking her for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Cinnamon. Cinnamon showed me what bravery looked like. She didn’t stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation; she simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park, she would run toward it. She jumped without knowing where she would land. She loved adventure. I found myself mirroring her behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

Cinnamon unfortunately passed away after a medical accident. I’m no stranger to sadness or grief, but losing my pet so suddenly was the most confusing emotional experience I’ve had to date. She no longer wakes me up at 5 am begging for breakfast, but she’s still the reason I get up every morning.

Our time is often cut unpredictably, unmistakably short. It would be a shame to live life being anything less than brave and adventurous.

Nearly 200 years after Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, researchers have pulled DNA from his hair, searching for clues about his health problems and hearing loss.

They weren’t able to solve the mystery of the German composer’s deafness or stomach problems. But they did find a genetic risk for liver disease, plus a liver-damaging hepatitis B(乙型肝炎 ) infection in the last months of his life. These factors, together with his frequent drinking, were probably enough to cause the liver failure that is widely believed to have killed him, according to a study published in the journal Current Biology.

March 26 marked the 196th anniversary of Beethoven’s death in Vienna in 1827, at the age of 56. The composer himself wrote that he wanted doctors to study his health problems after he died. Since his death, scientists have long tried to put together Beethoven’s medical history and have suggested various possible explanations for his many health problems.

Now, with advanced DNA technology, researchers have been able to pull genetic clues from some samples of Beethoven’s hair that were cut off and kept in his memory. Using almost 3 meters of Beethoven’s hair, scientists were able to pull out pieces of DNA and put together a genome that they could study for signs of genetic disease.

The researchers didn’t find any clear signs of what caused Beethoven’s hearing loss or stomach problems. However, they found two things probably weren’t causes: celiac disease(腹泻病)— a health problem caused by eating the gluten protein — and lactose ( ) intolerance — a health problem caused by the lactose sugar in milk.

The researchers also made a surprising discovery: when they tested DNA from living members of the Beethoven family, scientists found a difference in the Y chromosomes (染色体) that get passed down on the father’s side. The Y chromosomes from five men in Beethoven’s family matched each other — but they didn’t match the composer’s. This suggests that sometime before Beethoven was born, a child in the composer’s family was born from an extramarital relationship.

    8. What is the purpose of the research?

    A. To fulfill Beethoven’s wishes of studying for signs of genetic disease.

    B. To introduce the advantages of DNA technology in medical researches.

    C. To prove that Beethoven’s hearing loss was not caused by celiac disease.

D To figure out the reasons for Beethoven’s deafness and health problems.

    9. According to paragraph 2, what is generally considered to be the cause of Beethoven’s death?

    A. A liver-damaging infection and hearing loss.

    B. The liver disease and too much drinking.

    C. The lung cancer together with alcohol drinking.

    D. A genetic risk of liver disease and stomach problems.

    10. What can be inferred from the article?

    A. All the men in Beethoven’s family have the same Y chromosome.

    B. Frequent drinking will definitely cause liver failure and even death.

    C. Scientists pull out pieces of DNA by using more than 3 meters of Beethoven’s hair.

    D. Celiac disease is not the probable cause of Beethoven’s hearing or stomach problems.

    11. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Lactose Sugar in Milk Can Cause Celiac Disease.

    B. DNA from Hair Offers Clues for Beethoven’s Disease.

C Advanced DNA Technology Help Make New Discovery.

    D. Researchers Have Solved Mystery of Beethoven’s deafness.

If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: more hugs, more time outside in nature, more belief in their own power to change the world. The third one leaves some people wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.

Let’s start with the idea that all of us – especially young people – need heroes. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity and a hero. A celebrity is all about fame– temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move, etc. A hero, by contrast, is about character – qualities under the surface that aren’t seen until they take action.

Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.

Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy – which shoes, which cell phone – not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities – their own power to – make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person.

How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples of other young people who have made a difference.

Barbara grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organised the creation of a recycling centre for crude oil (原油). Her project has grown to include 18 recycling centres in Texas.

The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.

    12. What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?

    A. To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.

    B. To show the details about being celebrities and heroes.

    C. To discuss the distinctions between celebrities and heroes.

    D. To explain the meanings of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.

    13. What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 3?

    A. Heroes only help specific groups of people.

    B. Heroes want to be recognised for their work.

    C. Heroes play a vital role in keeping the world running.

    D. Heroes enjoy piloting boats to reach their destination.

    14. How does the author advance his view that young people believe in their own power?

A By explaining the qualities that make a young person a hero.

    B. By comparing the achievements made by different young people.

    C. By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.

    D. By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.

    15. What does this passage mainly talk about?

    A. More heroes are needed in the modern world.

    B. Celebrities are reported too much in the media.

    C. Adults should become role models for young people.

    D. Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.

A new study suggests classic paintings by well-known Impressionists Joseph Turner and Claude Monet may have been influenced by air pollution during the Industrial Revolution.

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by authors from Harvard and Sorbonne universities, analyzed 60 oil paintings by Turner from 1796 to 1850 and 38 paintings by Monet from 1864 to 1901.

Scientists don’t know exactly how polluted the cities were during that time for lack of data. However, researchers say examining the works of Turner and Monet can give a picture of long-term environmental change with the air pollution.

In particular, researchers said changes in local sulfur dioxide emissions from burning coal may explain changes in the colour contrast and intensity (强度) of Turner, Monet, and others’ works, even after taking into account the artistic trends and subject matter of the time.

Scientists successfully measured painters’ representation of nature, focusing on differences in local weather patterns which influenced colour in works painted in different parts of Europe. Paintings’ done in Britain generally feature a paler blue sky than other works in other parts of the continent. Generally, artists can historically accurately represent their environment, so Turner and Monet were chosen because they are famous for their landscape and cityscape paintings and also because they were active during the Industrial Revolution, when air pollution grew at a rate never seen before.

Additionally, researchers say that as the air in London and Paris became more polluted, the cities would appear hazier (模糊) to the eyes as well as in photographs. By comparing the paintings of Turner and Monet to pictures from the era, they were able to determine the artists were at least partly influenced by the change in emissions.

    16. What did the researchers find in the works of Turner and Monet?

    A. Air pollution at that time. B. Change in subject matter.

    C. Social trends of the period. D. Development of photography

    17. What can we learn from paragraph 5?

    A. European artists preferred landscape paintings.

    B. Scientists focused on studying weather patterns.

    C. Turner and Monet intended to present pollution.

    D. Britain suffered from air pollution most in Europe.

    18. How did the researchers conduct the study?

    A. By referring to relevant historical records.

    B. By comparing the paintings of Turner and Monet.

    C. By relating the paintings to the air conditions then.

    D. By analyzing the data during the Industrial Revolution.

    19. What is the purpose of the text?

    A. To inform people of a new discovery. B. To instruct people to appreciate paintings.

    C. To introduce the Industrial Revolution. D. To call on people to protect the environment.

My great-grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of a legend in her own lifetime, which now stretches to 92 years. I should add that we’re not allowed to call her Gran, because she says it makes her feel old.

That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I paid a visit to her. She picked up a box which she placed on the coffee table. “There you go,” she said. “You do know what you’re doing with these things, don’t you?”

It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient. I was amazed it was still going.

    “Yes,” I said.

“Good. That’s why I ask you. You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home with you and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, you can show me how to use my new phone, such as getting on the internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.

I grabbed the box and stood up. Setting up the phone would be easy. It was teaching her how to use it that may prove challenging.

The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone. “Here’s your phone. It’s all ready to use.”

For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.

She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe (滑动屏幕). “What do you mean, swipe?” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.

She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa. “Take it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”

I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go home when she was angry and upset.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
