When Zhi Yueying, then 19, went to the remote Niyang village in Yichun city, Jiangxi province, to work as a village teacher in 1980, villagers were doubtful if she was going to stay long.
Over the past four decades, Zhi has devoted herself to rural education. She is a recipient of Touching China awards that recognize the most inspiring role models in 2016. She was also awarded as a model poverty fighter by the government. Zhi has a profound understanding of the importance of education in the mountains. Over the years, she has taught the students and cared for them, since many of them were “left-behind” children whose parents migrated to other places to work. More than 1,000 students of hers have left the mountain area, and created a better life for themselves.
Located amid the mountains, the village was very poor and far from any town. Villagers had to hike in the mountains. “I arrived at the school in an early evening, and was shocked. I had known the conditions were poor, but the reality was worse.” Moreover, local people needed to go downhill to buy daily necessities, and transport them back in their hands or balanced across their shoulders. “I had never walked uphill on a mountain road before, so I walked much more slowly than others, sometimes I walked slowly behind too much and was scared to tears,” says Zhi. Sometimes she had to walk uphill by herself with a flashlight at night. The wild boars and rabbits sometimes frightened her and she enhanced her courage by singing loudly.
But she gradually got used to her life there. At the beginning, she found many local people valued their sons far more than their daughters, and would not like to let them attend school. Zhi went to their homes repeatedly and gradually persuaded them to send all their children to school. For those who could not afford the tuition, she spared her own money to help.
Zhi says seeing her students do well beyond the mountains is deeply rewarding. “My dream, the same as before, is to stay by the side of more children. I know poverty will forever say goodbye to the mountainous villages, to my students, and to myself,” says Zhi.
24.Why did Zhi choose to stay long in the mountains?
    A.She was a village teacher.
B.She was a Touching China awards recipient.
C.She was shocked by the poor living conditions.
D.She was aware of the significance of rural education.
25.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A.The reasons for their poverty.
B.The ways of buying daily necessities.
C.The tough situations in the mountains.
D.The description of Zhi’s teaching experience.
26.What can we learn about Zhi Yueying?
A.She has a sense of achievement. B.She enjoys living in mountains.
C.She has changed the local life. D.She likes challenges in teaching.
27.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.A Life-changing Lesson B.A Contributor to Rural Education
C.The Teaching Experience in Mountains D.The Current Situation of Rural Education
    C
Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have become extremely powerful, surprising even their creators. Most people have probably read a book or seen a movie about an AI or robot that has become so smart that it can take over the world. The AI in stories like these is known as AGI or Artificial General Intelligence. True AGI would be intelligent in many different areas and would be able to learn on its own. Currently, there is no real AGI. Most experts believe it will be many years before an AGI could possibly be created.
Scientists have been working to improve AI models, mainly by training the models on larger and larger collections of information. Those efforts are paying off. The AI tool that has gotten the most attention recently is ChatGPT, created by the company Open AI. ChatGPT appears to be extremely intelligent, which answers quickly in perfect sentences, makes up stories and games, writes essays and much more. Another powerful model called GPT-4 is also developed by the same company. GPT-4 can create and explain jokes, and pass tests.
The rapid progress of recent A I models worries some people. Last week, many computer experts released a letter calling for a six-month pause in any work on AI tools stronger than GPT-4.
The letter claimed AI companies were in a race to create “powerful digital minds” that no one could “understand, predictor control”. The group behind the letter wants government s to develop laws to make sure A I tools are safe. Not all AI experts agree with the letter. Some say the letter makes today’s AI tools sound more intelligent than they really are. Others say it’s more important to worry about real problems in current AI tools rather than imaginary ones in the future.
ChatGPT has caused so much excitement that many companies are likely to keep developing powerful AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warming that many people—including leaders—will be thinking about carefully.
28.Why are the book and movie mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To show the surprising power of AI.
B.To clarify AI will take over the world.
C.To state the threat of A I to its creators.
D.To indicate an AI or robot is smart enough.
29.What can be inferred about ChatGPT from Paragraph 2?
A.It offers practical instructions on essay-writing skills.
B.It trains AI models on how to present information.
C.It has difficulty in understanding jokes.
    D.It produces perfect language response.
30.What’s the letter’s attitude to Chat GPT?
    A.In different. B.Favorable. C.Concerned. D.Disappointed.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.Why AI tools are beneficial to us.
B.Why AI tools are accessible to the public.
C.Whether AI tools are having a bright future.
D.Whether AI tools are becoming too powerful.
    D
When you enjoy your morning cup of tea, you are probably not aware that those tea leaves can mean injury, or even death, for Asian elephants wandering Indian tea gardens.
In the Indian state of Assam, growing numbers of tea farms are destroying the Asian elephant’s habitats and endangering their population. Much of the forest land where tea is grown in Assam is flat and thus farmers must dig drainage trenches or small channels to prevent water from accumulating and hurting the plants. The trenches, however, can be death traps for the elephants.
Since the elephants need to use tea plantations as landmarks when traveling in forests, they almost unavoidably have to move through the farms. Moreover, because there are fewer humans around, pregnant females often use tea-growing areas as safe shelters to give birth. But baby elephants, still not used to rough ground may easily fall into the trenches and get hurt. Once injured, they might not be able to climb out. When mothers try to dig their babies out, both may be trapped in thick mud, even be killed. Furthermore, elephants are known to resist leaving their sick or dying behind, and a group may stay at a trench with a trapped baby for hours, unwilling to move on until all hope is lost.
Is there possibility for elephants to live in harmony with the booming tea business? Elephant Friendly Tea is an organization that takes the initiative to make it possible. The organization encourages consumers to choose brands that take an active part in elephants protection, and has established a certification program to reward tea growers who are doing it right. Until now, only smaller tea brands have been certified, but awareness is growing. The organization believes that people may be encouraged to buy elephant-friendly brands when they know more about the risk tea can cause to these endangered animals.
32.Why do farmers in Assam dig trenches?
A.To trap elephants. B.To mark boundaries.
C.To protect tea trees. D.To expand tea farms.
33.What can we say about baby elephants?
A.They get stuck by the sharp branches of the tea trees.
B.They have difficulty moving around the uneven fields.
C.They might miss the landmarks while travelling in forests.
D.They fail to find a safe shelter when climbing out of trenches.
34.What does “it” underlined in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Encouraging consumers to choose high-quality brands.
B.Rewarding tea growers for protecting the environment.
    C.Promoting elephant-friendly trenches and organizations.
D.Creating a win-win situation for elephants and tea farms.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.The Trenches Pose Threats to Elephants
    B.Habitat Loss Affects Endangered Animals
C.Growth of Tea Gardens Benefits Plantation
    D.Farms Sponsor Environmental Organizations

There are countless articles online that will give you advice on how to deal with homesickness, but here are some of my favorite advice and tips on what has helped me. 36 .
Make food from your home country
And if you don’t cook, try learning to cook with friends or find new places to eat. This may just be me loving food, but eating with friends really makes things so much better. 37 .
Food can be connected to memories. You can talk about what this reminds you of, while also creating new memories to mix with the ones that make you miss home.
Call home—but not every minute of every day
I was a little annoyed when I saw so many online sources phrase it this way: “Talk to your parents—but not too much. Call home—but not too often.” 38 . It’s good to keep in touch with your family and friends. However, it’s a problem when you’re talking to them so much that it’s stopping you from having real experience in this new place.
39 . Call the people you love often, keep them updated with your life and ask them how life is going for them. You’re going to need that. Think of it this way—the more you’re living outside of your room, the more you can tell them later about everything you’re learning.
    40
There is nothing wrong with finding someone to talk about how you’re feeling. It can be friends and family, mentors or professors that you feel can understand you. Or it may mean talking to a counselor or getting psychological help if that’s what you think you need. Talking about mental health is becoming a lot more open. So, if you’re feeling homesick, it can also be helpful to do some research on who your university recommends you reach out to.
    A.Talk to someone
    B.Do some research
C.There is nothing wrong with being homesick
D.So, of course, keep in touch with your family
E.Hopefully, they will be helpful to you as well
F.But, the thing is, they really have a point when they say that
G.It’s a way to bond, an excuse to get closer, and you even get rewarded from it

    Up in Lights
For some, putting up Christmas lights is a holiday chore. But for the Pascucci family, it was always a big day of celebration.
Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, Sara’s father, Anthony Pascucci, 60, woke up excited to string lights and decorate the lawn of his home and didn’t take them down until February, being the only house with Christmas decorations in the community. Anthony Pascucci believed the brightness of the lights could counter (抵消) some of the darkness of the past year with COVID-19.
In 2020, as in every other year, Anthony Pascucci strung colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if sparkles were dripping onto the hallway. Sara’s brother, Anthony Jr. helped with the wiring, while Sara hung ornaments (装饰物) on the tree inside the house playing the song “White Christmas” over and over to keep everyone in the spirit. The whole place looked like a scene from a pop-up Christmas storybook.
On Christmas Eve, the whole house twinkled with lights and gifts were piled under the tree. Everyone was looking forward to overly stuffed clams——a typical Italian feast. But most of all, they looked forward to enjoying another Christmas together as a family.
However, Sara received a call from her colleague who had tested positive for COVID-19. Though Sara didn’t have any symptoms she decided to get tested right away, as well as the whole family. When their results came back they all learned that they also had COVID-19. Several weeks later on early February, Anthony Pascucci passed away after getting lung infections.
In addition to helping to plan the funeral for her father, Sara had to tackle a seemingly endless list of difficult to-dos. It was almost too much to bear.

    66. The Coming-of-Age Ceremony—an Unforgettable Experience
On May 4th, all the senior Grade 3 students, their parents and teachers took part in the coming-of-age ceremony, which was held in our school.
Dressed in Hanfu, the traditional Chinese costume, we gathered together in the Art Center of our school for the ceremony. The ceremony started with a speech delivered by our headmaster. He congratulated us and encouraged us to pursue our dreams bravely. After that, a student representative expressed our gratitude to our beloved parents and teachers. Then parents gave us a gift with their best wishes. Finally, we took photos together.
As it was really a memorable moment, I made up my mind to be independent from then on!

    67.
But when she returned to the house after the funeral, the twinkling Christmas lights brought her a spark of joy. The lights were a sign of hope and resilience, a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is still beauty and brightness to be found. Sara realized that her father’s tradition of putting up Christmas lights wasn’t just about making their own home festive, it was about spreading that joy and hope to others as well.
In the following days, more and more Christmas lights were reappearing on neighbors’ houses. And soon the whole street was aglow with colorful lights and decorations. Every evening, families would take walks around the neighborhood, admiring the festive displays and feeling a sense of community and togetherness. The Pascucci family’s tradition had taken on a life of its own, becoming a symbol of resilience and hope in the face of difficult times. And as the years went on, the lights continued to shine brightly, bringing joy and comfort to all who saw them.
