As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification (沙漠化). ”Within 10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.“ A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 per cent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilisers (肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and setup a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. ”I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.“
By September 2016, more than 130,000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 per cent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant 1 million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco.
    4. How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her?
    A. They fired her enthusiasm for helping others.
    B. They helped her better understand her father.
    C. They made her decide to leave the country.
    D. They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
    5. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland?
    A. Cold weather. B. Soil pollution.
    C. Low rainfall. D. Forest damage.
    6. Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia?
    A. To create job opportunities for young people.
    B. To facilitate the protection of their farmland.
    C. To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers.
    D. To help the children obtain a basic education.
    7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A Saving Water in Africa
    B. Fighting Poverty in North Africa
    C. Holding back the Sahara
    D. Planting Trees in Tunisia
A 5. C 6. B 7. C
根据第一段中“Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. (从9岁起,她就开始在假期陪伴她来自于突尼斯的父亲去突尼斯东部的出生地,这激发了她帮助他人的热情。)”可知,图米去突尼斯度假的经历唤醒了她帮助他人的热情。故选A项。
根据第二段最后一句“A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification. (平均降雨量的减少和干旱严重程度的增加导致突尼斯大约75%的农业土地受到沙漠化的威胁。)”可知,降雨量少是突尼斯农田沙漠化的主要原因。故选C项。
    【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段第二句“She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. (她搬到突尼斯,并建立了一个名为Acacias for All的项目,将她的可持续农业理念付诸行动。)”以及最后一段中“By September 2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. (截至2016年9月,在20个试点农场种植了13万多棵金合欢树,农民记录其成活率达到60%。图米估计,为了保护突尼斯的农田,大约需要300万棵金金合欢。)”可知,她创立Acacias for All项目的目的是保护当地的农田。故选B项。
    【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其最后一段中“By September 2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 per cent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. (截至2016年9月,在20个试点农场种植了13万多棵金合欢树,农民记录其成活率达到60%。图米估计,为了保护突尼斯的农田,大约需要300万棵金合槐。)”可知,文章讲述的是主人公图米在9岁时,在一次陪伴爸爸回突尼斯家乡时激发了她要帮助当地人的热情,由此创立了Acacias for All项目,种植金合欢树,改善保护当地农田,坚持与沙漠化作斗争,实践其可持续农业的理念。C选项“Holding back the Sahara (阻挡撒哈拉沙漠)”符合文章标题。故选C。

Experts believe the best tine to teach kids language skills is when they are babies. Actually the task is easily done with parents reading or talking to their babies. However, that is impossible when kids are born deaf.
In that case, parents either have to quickly become adept at sign language or risk the child facing learning delays in the future. Now, a lovely blue-eyed robot, a human avatar(用户头像), and some high-tech neuroscience(神经科学)may help parents with this important developmental task.
The Robot Avatar Thermal-Enhanced system, or RAVE, is the creation of a team led by Petitto, a scientist at Gallaudet University. The learning begins when the robot’s thermal(热力的)camera, which is focused on the baby’s face, senses small changes in his body temperature, which is associated with awareness. This, combined with the baby’s facial expression, causes the robot to turn its head and guide the baby’s attention to a computer screen.
Here, a human avatar starts to communicate with the baby much like a parent would. For example, if the baby points towards the screen, the avatar might respond, “Are you pointing to me?” and follow that up with a fairy tale, or some necessary social communication, all in sign language. The “conversation” continues until the kid loses interest.
The team, who have been testing the system for three years, found that babies began to move their hands in a way similar to sign language after interacting with RAVE for just a few minutes. Petitto says natural language, whether communicated through speech or sign, starts the same parts of the brain and believes the movement proves the babies are learning the key parts of communication.
    8. What does the underlined word “adept” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Nervous. B. Skillful.
    C. Sensitive. D. Astonished.
    9. Who might benefit most from the blue-eyed robot mentioned in the text?
    A. A kid born with hearing problems. B. A kid who enjoys robot toys.
    C. A kid fond of medical science. D. A kid with a gift for language skills.
    10. What is the purpose of the example in paragraph 4?
    A. To show how a human avatar works.
    B. To stress the importance of sign language.
    C. To explain a human avatar’s weakness.
    D. To encourage parents to talk to their babies more.
    11. What does Petitto think of the RAVE?
    A. It is easily designed. B. It falls short of her expectations.
    C. It is effective in a way. D. It helps deaf babies hear the world.
B 9. A 10. A 11. C
前文预设了孩子天生失聪的情况,后文提到“risk the child facing learning delays in the future(要么就有可能让孩子在未来面临学习迟缓的风险。)” A. Nervous紧张的;B. Skillful有技巧的;熟练的;C.Sensetive敏感的;D.Astonished非常惊讶的。
第三段提到“The learning begins when the robot’s thermal(热力的)camera, which is focused on the baby’s face, senses small changes in his body temperature, which is associated with awareness. This, combined with the baby’s facial expression, causes the robot to turn its head and guide the baby’s attention to a computer screen.(当机器人的热摄像机(热力的)聚焦在婴儿的脸上,感知到婴儿体温的微小变化时,学习就开始了,这与意识有关。当婴儿的面部表情相结合时,机器人便会转过头,引导婴儿的注意力到电脑屏幕上。)”第四段举例提到“if the baby points towards the screen, the avatar might respond, “Are you pointing to me?” and follow that up with a fairy tale, or some necessary social communication, all in sign language.”(如果婴儿指向屏幕,虚拟形象可能会回应,“你是在指我吗?”,然后再讲一个童话故事,或者进行一些必要的社交交流,全部用手语。) 故选A。
第四段提到“For example, if the baby points towards the screen, the avatar might respond, “Are you pointing to me?” and follow that up with a fairy tale, or some necessary social communication, all in sign language. The “conversation” continues until the kid loses interest.(例如,如果婴儿指向屏幕,虚拟形象可能会回应,“你是在指我吗?,然后再讲一个童话故事,或者进行一些必要的社交交流,全部用手语。“谈话”一直持续到孩子失去兴趣为止。)”由此判断,该段在讲述语言学习机器人的工作原理。故选A。
最后一段最后一句提到“Petitto says natural language, whether communicated through speech or sign, starts the same parts of the brain and believes the movement proves the babies are learning the key parts of communication.(Petitto说,自然语言,无论是通过言语还是手势交流,都是从大脑的相同部位开始的,他认为这个动作证明婴儿正在学习交流的关键部分。)”
    D
Too much time spent on gaming, smartphones and watching television is linked to heightened levels and diagnoses (诊断) of anxiety or depression in children as young as age 2, according to a new study.
Even after only one hour of screen time daily, children and teens may begin to have less curiosity, lower self-control, less emotional stability and a greater inability to finish tasks, reports San Diego State University psychologist Jean Twenge and University of Ceorgia psychology professor W. Keith Campbell. They were particularly interested in associations between screen time and diagnoses of anxiety and depression in youth, which has not yet been studied in great detail.
Twenge and Campbell found adolescents who spend more than seven hours a day on screens were twice as likely as those spending one hour to have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression. Overall, links between screen time and well-being were larger among adolescents than among young children.
“At first, I was surprised that the associations were larger for adolescents,” Twenge said. “However, adolescents spend more time on their phones and on social media, and these activities are more strongly linked to low well-being than watching television and videos, which is most of younger children’s screen time.”
The study provides further evidence that the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) established screen time limits — one hour per day for those aged 2 to 5, with a focus on high-quality programs — are valid (有效的), Twenge said. The study also suggests that similar limits — perhaps to two hours a day-should be applied to school-aged children and adolescents, said Twenge.
In terms of prevention, establishing possible causes and outcomes of low psychological well-being is especially important for child and adolescent populations. “Half of mental health problems develop by adolescence,” Twenge and Campbell wrote in their paper.
    12. What do we know about Twenge and Campbell’s study according to paragraph 2?
    A. It requires further research.
    B. It brings children less comfort.
    C. It needs greater ability to finish.
    D. It generates more public concern.
    13. What is a reason for the different degrees of impact on children?
    A. The effects of the harmful contents.
B Teens’ stronger addiction to screens.
    C. The portability of electronic devices.
    D. Teens’ negative emotions at discipline.
    14. Which of the following do the researchers want AAP to do?
    A. Provide high-quality programs.
    B. Issue minimum screen time limits.
    C. Apply the limits to older children.
    D. Present further evidence for prevention.
    15. What does this study focus on?
    A. Adolescents’ mental problems.
    B. The bad habits of the young adults.
    C. Low level of mental health in youth.
    D. The importance of the young population.
A 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据文章第二段“They were particularly interested in associations between screen time and diagnoses of anxiety and depression in youth, which has not yet been studied in great detail.(他们对屏幕使用时间与青少年焦虑和抑郁诊断之间的关系特别感兴趣,这一点尚未得到详细研究。)” 故选A。
根据文章第四段““At first, I was surprised that the associations were larger for adolescents,” Twenge said. “However, adolescents spend more time on their phones and on social media, and these activities are more strongly linked to low well-being than watching television and videos, which is most of younger children’s screen time.”(“起初,我很惊讶这种联系在青少年中更大,”特温格说。“然而,青少年花在手机和社交媒体上的时间更多,这些活动与低幸福感的联系比看电视和视频更紧密,而电视和视频是年幼儿童的大部分屏幕时间。”)”可知,青少年对于屏幕的使用时间更长,所以影响更大。故选B。
    【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“The study provides further evidence that the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) established screen time limits—one hour per day for those aged 2 to 5, with a focus on high-quality programs—are valid (有效的), Twenge said. The study also suggests that similar limits—perhaps to two hours a day-should be applied to school-aged children and adolescents, said Twenge. (Twenge说,这项研究进一步证明了美国儿科学会(AAP)制定的屏幕时间限制是有效的——2至5岁儿童每天一小时,重点是高质量的节目。Twenge说,这项研究还表明,学龄儿童和青少年也应该受到类似的限制,可能是每天两小时。)”可知,Twenge希望AAP能把这种限制用于年龄较大的儿童。故选C。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据全文内容以及最后一段“In terms of prevention, establishing possible causes and outcomes of low psychological well- being is especially important for child and adolescent populations. “Half of mental health problems develop by adolescence,” Twenge and Campbell wrote in their paper.(在预防方面,确定心理健康低下的可能原因和结果对儿童和青少年人群尤其重要。Twenge和Campbell在他们的论文中写道:“一半的心理健康问题是在青春期出现的。”)”可推断,他们的研究重点在青少年的心理健康方面。故选A。

The winter of 1820 was a cold one for the Lincolns. It snowed nearly every day and the snow was high around their little farm house.
Abe was just a boy, but he had to help his father Tom around the farm. He looked after the house, milked the cow and prepared the dinner. It was hard work, and there wasn’t much fun for him and his brothers and sisters. Abe liked reading, but there was no book there. Abe was not happy. He was sad most of the time and seldom talked or smiled.
Mrs. Lincoln, Abe’s stepmother, really loved the boy. She noticed the boy’s silence and was concerned about him. She tried to think of ways to make Abe happy.
One day Mrs. Lincoln got up early in the morning. She took all the pennies from a small box. “I’m going to town tomorrow,” she said.
“You are going to town?” Tom asked. He was surprised. “That’s a long way. You see, the snow is thick. What are you going to do in town? Can’t you make it another day when the snow stops?”
“It’s a surprise. And I must go there tomorrow!” she said with a determined voice.
“Do you want Abe or me to go with you?” Tom asked his wife the next day.
“No, don’t worry, honey! I’ll be all right,” she said and went out of the house.
Walking in the snow was difficult. It took Mrs. Lincoln a long time to get to town. She bought something in town and wrapped it carefully. Then she started back.

One possible answer
It was late in the evening when she got home. The whole family was waiting for her. It was still snowing hard outside. Seeing the white frost on his stepmother’s face, little Abe took a cloth and helped to wipe it off gently. Dinner was ready and Abe’s brothers and sisters went to lay the table. But Mrs. Lincoln was not in a hurry. She carefully took out a package from her bag and started to unwrap it.
Abe’s eyes became very wide. He fixed his eyes upon the package and watched eagerly. As Mrs. Lincoln tore the package open, a book suddenly came into sight. Little Abe couldn’t help crying out in joy! He ran to get it and found it was an old story book. He couldn’t wait one more minute and began to read it. Soon, he was so absorbed in reading the book that he totally forgot the meal on the table.
