At the beginning of this term, I found a new student in my class named Ainne Olar, who is 16 years old. She was quiet, always having lunch alone. From her parents, I learned that Ainne was born in Japan and spent most of her childhood there, and then the family moved in Canada. It wasn’t as easy as she thought. She had to learn and speak a new language to be able to communicate with other people. When at school, she tended to be alone. She usually didn’t talk to people. In class, she was not active , and always chose to shut her mouth. She didn’t join any clubs or after-school activities for a little while even though the teachers and her mom were always encouraging her.

At first, I thought maybe she was just a little shy like me when I first moved to Canada. At that time, it also wasn’t as easy as I thought, but I’ve made it until where I am now. So I had the confidence to encourage Ainne to join us.

In one class, I invited Ainne to make a short presentation. But she just stood up, speechless. Then she looked down, color rising on her face. The next class, we had a P. E. lesson in the gym. But she still didn’t join in it, just watching everyone play. Learning that she was fond of sports and was actually a very athletic and energetic person, I felt the urge to do something to help her melt into us. All these thoughts came to my head and pushed me to sit aside Ainne.

Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from text-books. Sam was a kind-hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.

Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day (植树节), his class organized a trip to a local village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn’t wait to tell his mom the good news. So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel(铲), a bucket, gloves and so on.

On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was a beautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.

As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shovelling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher’s command, everyone started to do their job.

However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher was a middle-aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.

Paul and I were on our school basketball team, The Lions. We loved basketball and were both huge fans of the NBA. When we weren’t playing on the court which was next to our building, we were watching a game on TV. My favourite player was LeBron James. Paul’s favourite player was Tyrone Bogues, a guy who played for the Charlotte Hornets, although we actually agree that they are both champions.

Bogues was only 1.6 metres tall, which made him the shortest player ever in the NBA. Guess what? Paul was only 1.6 metres tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he had to practise more. During all those hours of doing jump shots on his own, he used Bogues as his inspiration. Paul once said, “lf Bogues could make it, why not me?”

Our coach was not so sure. Paul had to try out many times just for making the team. He was still usually on the bench, being just a replacement, which was really tough on him. Everyone knew Paul had real skills, and was someone who worked really hard and had a strong desire to play for the team. However, Paul didn’t get a chance.

This week, The Lions were playing our main competitors, The Bears, a team whose record this season had been perfect. They hadn’t lost a single game. It would be a tough one. Paul didn’t know he’d soon get the chance that he’d been waiting for.

Suddenly, a player and I crashed into each other. Pain raced through my body. My knee hurt badly. The team gathered around looking worried. The last quarter was about to begin, and my team was behind by 10 points. We had no more players. Just then the coach cast a look at the bench players.

That night, I quarreled with my mother, then stormed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket, and I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.

At the same time, I went through a noodle shop. Picking up the sweet fragrance, I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!

The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey, little girl, you want to eat a bowl?”

A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.

“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel!”

The seller sighed, “Girl, why do you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little, why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom?”

I was really surprised after hearing that.

Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little. I thought she was supposed to take care of me and love me.

On the way home, I thought in my head what I would say to my mother when I arrived home: “Mom, I’m sorry, I know it is my fault, please forgive me…”
