My dog, Harvey, is always looking for something to do. He loves to fetch the ball, run after birds’ shadows and bite bones. If none of those are available, he’ll find something else to do. He’ll chew our shoes, dig holes in the garden or take toilet paper off the roll. This is the reason we gave him a middle name: Danger.
Harvey Danger is a metaphor(暗喻) for my mind. He is like an active and creative mind. My experience with having a creative mind is that if I don’t give it a task, something will turn on itself.
To be frank, several years ago, I didn’t think I was creative. I was just an ordinary human sticking to my daily routine. But things changed when I came across an article written by Brene Brown. She put forward a theory I had never heard of. “There’re no such beings as creative people or non-creative people. There’re only people who use their creativity and people who don’t,” Brown wrote. “Unused creativity is not benign. It can transform and turn into anger, sorrow, shame and depression. ”
I have a mind that is all of those things combined and, if it doesn't have anything to take its attention, it will go searching for things. It tends to do negative things or find things like worries or troubles to focus on. That doesn’t mean that those with creative minds need to be busily thinking all the time. What it means is that our minds need a task. It's about releasing our creative energy to keep our minds healthy.
Before I throw a ball to Harvey-because it’s not only good for both of us, but also good for the garden that I don’t want dug up-I’ll leave you with Brown’s wisdom. Just give the dog a job, and you’ll have a happier life.
    4. Why was the author’s dog named Danger?
    A. It warned people against possible dog bites.
B He was born with an active and creative mind.
    C. He would put things in a mess when free.
    D. It showed the author’s creativity.
    5. What changed the author’s understanding of creativity?
    A. His dog’s positive behavior.
    B. An article about daily routine.
    C. Brene Brown’s theory about creativity.
    D. His strong desire to fight negative feelings.
    6. What does the underlined word “benign” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Attractive. B. Abnormal.
    C. Common. D. Harmless.
    7. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Training dogs to help with housework.
    B. Staying creative to add to our happiness.
    C. Avoiding leaving a dog alone in the garden.
    D. Keeping a creative mind healthy with tasks.
C 5. C 6. D 7. D
根据文章第一段“If none of those are available, he’ll find something else to do. He’ll chew our shoes, dig holes in the garden or take toilet paper off the roll. This is the reason we gave him a middle name: Danger.(如果这些都没有,他会找别的事情做。他会咬我们的鞋子,在花园里挖洞,或者把厕所里的卫生纸拿走。这就是我们给他取名“危险”的原因。)”可知,作者给狗取名“危险”的原因是因为它没事的时候,会将东西弄得一团糟,故选C。
    【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“To be frank, several years ago, I didn’t think I was creative. I was just an ordinary human sticking to my daily routine. But things changed when I came across an article written by Brene Brown. She put forward a theory I had never heard of. “There’re no such beings as creative people or non-creative people. There’re only people who use their creativity and people who don’t,” Brown wrote.(老实说,几年前,我并不认为自己有创造力,我只是坚持日常生活的普通人。但当我看到Brene Brown写的一篇文章时,情况发生了变化。她提出了一个我从未听说过的理论。Brown写道:“没有创造性的人或者非创造性的人。只有利用他们的创造力的人和不利用他们的人。”)”可知,关于Brown创造力的理论改变了作者关于创造力的想法,故选C。
    【6题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第四段划线词“benign”后文内容“It can transform and turn into anger, sorrow, shame and depression.(它可以转变并成为怒气、伤心、羞愧和抑郁。)”
根据文章倒数第二段“What it means is that our minds need a task. It's about releasing our creative energy to keep our minds healthy.(这意味着我们的思想需要一项任务。这是关于释放我们创造力来保持我们的头脑健康。)”可知,文章通过对小狗总是在找事情做的描述,表达了作者认为我们需要向小狗一样,通过不断地找事情做,通过释放释放创造力来保持我们的头脑健康,故文章主要讲述的是通过做任务来保持头脑健康,故选D。
    C
The power of effective marketing has a long history. In the 19th century, a new product, soap, became available to everyone in England at a low price. Every British soap producer faced fierce competition. Their answer was to focus on promotion-and to come up with attractive visuals, catchy slogans and competitions to increase sales. Yet it can all very easily go wrong.
However clever the advertisement is, a product that nobody wants is not going to sell. In the motor industry there are stories of products that the public simply did not want. In 1957, Ford introduced a new model, Edsel. Following an investment of $400 million, the company sold only 25 percent of the cars they produced and lost $350 million. Perhaps Ford's biggest mistake was to misjudge the demand from the American public. America had just entered an economic recession(衰退), so the last thing people wanted was a large, expensive car that used a lot of fuel.
On special promotions, companies may underestimate demand and spend a lot more than they budgeted for. A classic case is that of Hoover, a vacuum(真空的) cleaner company, which offered two free air tickets to anyone who bought a vacuum cleaner for more than one hundred pounds. The tickets cost far more than the appliance. Sales increased 30% but the cost of the promotion was massive. The company lost over £40 million and in the end it was put up for sale.
Customers may find a different meaning in publicity than the promoters intended. Names, symbols and even colors are all possible danger areas. Pepsi Cola made an enormous mistake in some regions in changing the color of its vending machines to light blue, a color associated with death.
The message for successful marketing companies is never to make assumptions about your target audience. Otherwise, even creative, memorable promotion can go disastrously wrong!
    8. What led to the failure of Edsel in 1957?
    A. The fuel consumption. B. The appearance of the vehicle.
    C. The promotion advertisement. D. The investment on the research.
    9. What can we infer about Hoover?
    A. Its products were of high quality. B. It caused economic recession.
    C. It went broke finally. D. Its marketing strategy was practical.
    10. Which of the following shows the organization of the text?
    A. B.
    C. D.
    11. What does the text focus on?
    A. The principles of effective marketing. B. The failures of improper promotions.
    C. The functions of attractive advertisements. D. The cruelty of market competition.
A 9. C 10. A 11. B
根据文章第二段“In 1957, Ford introduced a new model, Edsel. Following an investment of $400 million, the company sold only 25 percent of the cars they produced and lost $350 million. Perhaps Ford's biggest mistake was to misjudge the demand from the American public. America had just entered an economic recession(衰退), so the last thing people wanted was a large, expensive car that used a lot of fuel.(在1957年,福特推出了一款新型车型。在投资4亿美元后,该公司只售出了其生产的25%,损失了3.5亿美元。也许福特最大的错误就是误判了公众的需求。美国刚刚进入经济衰退,所以人们最不想要的就是一辆大而昂贵的汽车,而且它需要大量的燃油。)”可知,福特在1957年失败的原因在于对公众需求的误判,此车对燃油的需求太大了,而对于正处于经济衰退的美国人来说,太多的燃油是他们消费不起的,故选A。
    【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“A classic case is that of Hoover, a vacuum(真空的) cleaner company, which offered two free air tickets to anyone who bought a vacuum cleaner for more than one hundred pounds. The tickets cost far more than the appliance. Sales increased 30% but the cost of the promotion was massive. The company lost over £40 million and in the end it was put up for sale.(一个经典的例子就是Hoover,一个真空吸尘器的清洁公司,该公司给以100英镑以上的价格购买真空吸尘器的顾客提供两张免费机票。该机票远远高于电器的价格。销售额增长了30%,但促销成本是巨大的。这家公司损失了4000多万美元,最后被出售。)”可知,这家公司损失太多,最终将自己出售了,故可推知,它最终破产了,故选C。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“The power of effective marketing has a long history. In the 19th century, a new product, soap, became available to everyone in England at a low price. Yet it can all very easily go wrong. (有效营销的力量由来已久。在19世纪,一种新产品肥皂以低廉的价格在英国人人都能买到。然而,这一切很容易出错。)”可知,文章第一段以英国肥皂引出有效营销这一话题,在第一段末用“这一切都很容易出错”引出后文;通过文章第二段“However clever the advertisement is, a product that nobody wants is not going to sell.(无论广告多美巧妙,一个没人想要的产品都不会被选中。)”、文章第三段“On special promotions, companies may underestimate demand and spend a lot more than they budgeted for.(在特别促销活动中,公司可能会低估需求,花费比预算多得多。)”和文章第四段“Customers may find a different meaning in publicity than the promoters intended.(顾客可能会在宣传中发现与推广人预期的不同的含义。)”可知,二三四段分别从三个方面说明营销方面的错误;通过文章最后一段“The message for successful marketing companies is never to make assumptions about your target audience. Otherwise, even creative, memorable promotion can go disastrously wrong!(对于成功的营销公司来说,要传达的信息是永远不要对你的目标受众做出假设。否则,即使是富有创意、令人难忘的促销活动也可能出现灾难性的错误。)”可知,最后一段总结全文,对于成功的营销公司来说,要传达的信息是永远不要对你的目标受众做出假设。故文章的结构是总分总结构,故选A。
    【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Yet it can all very easily go wrong.(然而,这一切都很容易出错。)”
    D
Human-made plastic materials have become so essential that it can be hard to grasp that they barely existed a century ago. At my desk, I'm typing on a plastic keyboard, scrolling a plastic mouse, and picking up a plastic pen. Day after day, more plastic enters my life, whether it's a shampoo bottle or new running shoes.
The invention of synthetic(合成的) plastics in the early 1900s was a success of innovation, with chemists realizing they could orchestrate molecular structures(编排分子结构) to create materials that are lighter, stronger, brighter, cheaper, more flexible and more durable. During World War II, nylon and other plastics became essential to the war effort. When the war ended, the initial plastics industry focused on making products for everyday life.
But the overuse of plastic has become a curse, with abandoned objects blocking waterways and landfills. And when plastic does finally fall apart, tiny particles go into the environment. We've known for years that microplastics have spread into the oceans. In this issue, we report on research confirming that microplastics are also storing up in our bodies. Plastic particles have been found in human blood, in body tissues and in breast milk.
Talk about environmental pollution hitting close to home. As independent journalist Anne Pinto-Rodrigues reports, microplastics probably enter the human body through the food we eat, the water we drink and even the air we breathe. Though consuming microplastics along with lunch is frightening enough, the idea that we might be taking in invisible bits with each breath feels much more disturbing.
Researchers have only recently begun quantifying the abundance of microplastics in the air, so it's not yet clear where people face the most exposure. Also unclear is what impact, if any, microplastics have on human health. Science is full of examples of unintended consequences.
Microplastics are an unintended consequence that we can't put back into the Tupperware. Merely switching from plastic to paper bags won't fix this problem. Science now needs to determine the extent of the threat microplastics might pose and invent new ways to protect against any harms.
    12. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning plastic?
    A. The widespread use. B. The serious consequences.
    C. The recycling methods. D. The chemical structure.
    13. Which can replace the underlined part “hitting close to home” in paragraph 4?
    A. that is shocking B. that is declining
    C. that is appealing D. that is demanding
    14. What's the author's attitude towards plastic?
    A. It can take the place of paper.
    B. It poses no threat to some extent.
    C. New solutions are expected to deal with its harms.
    D. Tupperware is to blame for its unintended results.
    15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. Plastic bags or paper bags?
    B. Microplastics: To die out or not?
    C. Will you welcome plastics into your life?
    D. Where does plastic go when we're done with it?
B 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据文章第三段“But the overuse of plastic has become a curse, with abandoned objects blocking waterways and landfills. And when plastic does finally fall apart, tiny particles go into the environment. We've known for years that microplastics have spread into the oceans. In this issue, we report on research confirming that microplastics are also storing up in our bodies. Plastic particles have been found in human blood, in body tissues and in breast milk.
根据文章第四段划线短语“hitting close to home”后文的提示“As independent journalist Anne Pinto-Rodrigues reports, microplastics probably enter the human body through the food we eat, the water we drink and even the air we breathe. Though consuming microplastics along with lunch is frightening enough, the idea that we might be taking in invisible bits with each breath feels much more disturbing. (正如独立记者Anne Pinto-Rodrigues报道的那样,微塑料可能通过我们吃的食物、喝的水甚至呼吸的空气进入到人体内。尽管午餐时摄入微塑料已经够可怕的了,但我们每次呼吸都会摄入看不见的东西,这让人更加感到不安。)”可推知,这一报道是令人感到惊讶的,令人恐慌的,故此处的短语“hitting close to home”与“that is shocking(令人震惊的)”意思相近,故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Science now needs to determine the extent of the threat microplastics might pose and invent new ways to protect against any harms.(科学家现在需要确定微塑料可能造成威胁的程度,并发明新的方法来防止任何伤害。)”
根据文章第一段“Human-made plastic materials have become so essential that it can be hard to grasp that they barely existed a century ago. At my desk, I'm typing on a plastic keyboard, scrolling a plastic mouse, and picking up a plastic pen. Day after day, more plastic enters my life, whether it's a shampoo bottle or new running shoes.(人造塑料已经变得如此重要以至于很难理解它们在一个世纪前几乎不存在。
You've come back from your holiday and you feel amazingly recharged. ____16____ Then, you open your inbox. You have hundreds, if not thousands, of unanswered emails. Suddenly, your calm starts to disappear and your blood pressure starts to rise. Yet, that's no way to start your first day at work after a holiday. Here's what you do to keep your stress to a minimum after a break.
____17____ Take this time to unpack and do some housework. Do whatever you need to do to wrap up the holiday bits and slowly start getting back into your daily routine. When you do this, you're much more likely to suffer from less stress. You will also feel more prepared going back into work.
As much as possible, limit your meetings and scheduled commitments the first week back. ____18____ The worst thing you can do is have back-to-back meetings the first few days with little or no time to actually catch up on what you've missed. Keep your calendar as clear as possible and get started on categorizing your unread emails. Split them into categories like urgent, non-urgent, quick responses, and no action needed. ____19____
Up your fun the week you're back. Go out for a meal with your friends. Walk your favorite route in your neighborhood. Look at the pictures from your holiday. ____20____ Hence, make a little time for play your first week back-and the weeks that follow. This will help you to feel happy and energized even though your holiday is behind you.
    A. This enables you to deal with your overflowing inbox.
    B. You've got a spring in your step and a smile on your face.
    C. Remember, there will be plenty more holidays in the future.
    D. So the first week back at work will be more tiring than usual.
    E. Give yourself at least half a day before you jump back into work.
    F. Then, start the urgent ones before diving into the quick responses.
    G. Post-holiday blues can be very common if you go straight into all work.
B 17. E 18. A 19. F 20. G

    The Last Easter Egg
My mom and I were in Florida during my mom’s spring holiday from teaching middle school. As an anxious four-year-old, I had asked my mom several times if the Easter Bunny would be able to find us. She promised me there would be eggs.
On Easter morning, my mom and I discovered that the Easter Bunny had left eggs on the hotel’s main lawn(草地) for all the kids. As we walked toward the group of adults and kids waiting for instructions, I found all of the kids were much bigger than me in the competition. It wasn’t looking good. The hotel staff member in charge of the hunt explained the rules. My heart began racing as I watched some of the other kids get into a pose to start.
When the staff member yelled “GO!”, all kids raced across the lawn, running from tree to tree looking for the plastic Easter eggs filled with candy. I dashed to the closest tree but did not find any eggs. I ran to a nearby sandpit(沙坑) hoping there would be an egg hidden there. But there wasn’t. I looked across the lawn and saw the other kids holding up their plastic eggs and knew my chance of finding even one egg was becoming smaller by the second.
Just then my mom pointed out a palm tree across the lawn. “Look! There’s One!”A shiny blue plastic egg was resting against the base of the tree. I looked up at my mom in excitement. However, she was staring in the direction of another mom, whose son was pulling candy out of an egg. The two moms were looking at one another and then at what appeared to be the last Easter egg. I had never seen my very petite(娇小的) mom before that day. She had been born with weak knees, due to an issue with her legs, and when she was in primary school she had worn special shoes to correct a foot problem.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As they stood there staring at each other, I started running toward the Easter egg.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My mom walked back to me with the Easter egg of her victory.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As they stood there staring at each other, I started running toward the Easter egg. And then my mom rushed past me-running in her Easter dress toward the palm tree and the shiny blue egg. “ Go, Mom!” I shouted. The other mom also dashed toward the shiny blue egg. In one last burst of speed, my mother reached the trunk of the tree, bent down, and grabbed the egg. “Wow! I got an egg!” I screamed in excitement, jumping up and down in celebration.
My mom walked back to me with the Easter egg of her victory. She handed me the shiny blue egg. I held it up joyfully, like the other kids had done. I felt myself the luckiest guy in the world. I’ve forgotten what kind of candy was inside that plastic egg and what I did with that egg after our vacation ended. But I clearly remember my mom running as fast as she could toward that shiny blue egg. And I’ll always remember the big smile on her face-a reflection of her love.
    冲向:rush to/dash to/fly at/run with full speeds
    尖叫:scream/shriek/squeal
