As a teacher it has been my goal to teach my students to become active and responsible members in the community, the nation, and the world. Over the years, my students have made great differences in our community, but saving lives was not really part of our plan.

In a January, the students asked why I was upset, so I sadly told them the story. A young man in my neighborhood hit his head while ice skating. Although sent to the hospital at once, he died a few days later.

Hearing this, the class began to study head injuries. When my students learned about the dangers, they did careful research before deciding that the best solution was a helmet (头盔) policy that would require all students to wear a helmet if they rode on a bike, skateboard, etc. By showing how important it was, they had the policy passed in the community. They also got a grant (拨款) to buy helmets to be sold at a lower price or given free to students.

After Spring Break that year, a mother came to our class to tell the students that they had saved her daughter’s life. With tears in her eyes, she said that her daughter hit a parked car while riding down a hill. Thankfully, she was wearing a helmet given by my students, which, according to the doctor, had prevented serious brain damage or death.

Since then and over the years, my students have solved many problems in our community: getting a path along the road to school built, changing the lunch program, and the list goes on and on. Each of these ideas was chosen, researched, and presented by the students. My role was that of a guide. Yes, I truly believe that eleven- and twelve-year-old students can make a difference as they become helpful and valuable members in the community.

    4. What should all students do according to the policy?

    A. Wear a helmet when riding. B. Do research on head injuries.

    C. Buy helmets at a low price. D. Explain its importance.

    5. What happened to the daughter in Paragraph 4?

A She had serious brain damage. B. She got hit by a car.

    C. She was protected by the helmet. D. She went to thank the class.

    6. How does the writer probably feel about his students?

    A. Sad. B. Confident. C. Anxious. D. Concerned.

    7. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Solving Problems for a Better World

    B. Achieving My Goal of Teaching Students

    C. Protecting Our Heads by Wearing Helmets

    D. Making a Difference in Our Community

    C

Like most people, I was not sure about using virtual reality (VR) (虚拟现实) for travel. However, driven by the chance to experience places and things I could never visit without time, money, and travel, I visited the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) to check out their spacewalk VR Transporter. The visit turned out to be the most unforgettable experience that I’d ever had. After an hour or so, I took off the VR headset (眼罩), feeling as if I had actually been staying in space for months.

As we move through the post-COVID era (后疫情时代), international travel and large events have both been slow to return, so Ceek, an APP for virtual events and experiences, has been developed to allow users to travel through time and space with great joy. Mary Spio, Ceek CEO, explains that the combination of sights and sounds is important. “So our users can listen and see everything at the same time.”

The promise of VR is that it helps us rethink what travel even means. “Traveling can be crossing cultures, crossing memories, and can be done in your mind,” says David Askaryan, CEO of the Museum of Future Experiences. He says MOFE’s VR technology create “an experience where the world around you just completely changes for 70 minutes.”

In the post-COVID era, with our vacation days or travel money running short, virtual reality may be the next best way to visit the destinations that have been lighting up our social timeline, or are on our list. As for me, I’m already planning my next VR trip: an underwater VR experience.

    8. Why did the writer visit MS1?

    A. To study space science. B. To buy VR headsets.

C To try VR travel. D. To learn spacewalk skills.

    9. What does the underline word “combination” mean in Paragraph 2?

    A. Attraction. B. Creation. C. Mixture. D. Discovery.

    10. What does David Askaryan say about travel?

    A. It focus on one culture. B. It provides a new experience.

    C. It helps build up memories. D. It changes the world around us.

    11. What does the writer think of VR travel in the future?

    A. It will become popular. B. It will happen underwater.

    C. It will be more expensive. D. It will take days to finish.

    D

Scientists have given the strongest warnings about world food supplies, saying that the world’s population may have to turn to a vegetarian(素食的) diet over the next 30 years to avoid serious shortage(短缺).

Humans get about 20% of their protein(蛋白质) from animal-based products now, but this may need to drop to just 5% to feed the extra 2,000 million people expected to be alive by 2050, according to research by some of the world’s leading scientists.

“There will not be enough water to produce food for the expected 9,000 million population in 2050 if we follow the diets common in western nations,” a report by Malik Falkenmark at the Stockholm International Water Institute said. “There will be just enough water if animal-based foods make up only 5% of what we eat.”

Warnings of food shortage caused by water shortage come as the UN prepares for a possible second world hunger in five years. Prices for important food such as corn and rice have risen nearly 50% on international markets since June. The price increase is the result of serious droughts (干旱) in the US and Russia, and not enough rainfalls in Asia.

Eating a vegetarian diet is one way to increase the supply of water to grow more food in an increasingly hungry world, the scientists said. Animal protein-rich food needs five to 10 times more water than a vegetarian diet. One third of the world’s farm land is used to grow food to feed animals. Other ways to feed people include cutting down waste and increasing trade between countries with plenty of food and those in need of it.

    12. What kind of shortage is mentioned in Paragraph 1?

    A. Food shortage. B. Protein shortage.

    C. Water shortage. D. Vegetable shortage.

    13. What will the world population be by 2050?

    A. 2.000 million. B. 5,000 million.

    C. 9.000 million. D. 7,000 million.

    14. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

    A. Most food prices have increased by 50%.

    B. Asia has been warned of food shortage.

    C. The UN have prepared corn for people.

    D. Climate change can influence food prices.

    15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A. Advantages of a vegetarian diet.

    B. Ways to fight world hunger.

    C. Food for feeding animals.

    D. Increase in world’s farm land.

    第二节(5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5)

    阅读短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Fear is a feeling, and like all feelings, it’s made by your brain.____16____That is, to get you out of danger, fast.

____17____It tells you not to, say, run into the street without looking both ways, or reach into the campfire to pick up a burned marshmallow(棉花糖), or try to feed a snake a piece of your hot dog. Fear can get you to think twice and make safe decisions.

But sometimes you can be terribly afraid of something that’s not really dangerous, like insects or bad dreams. Or you may have a fear that makes sense, but is too much.

You can never be away from fear completely. Fear is built into your brain.____18____But you can learn to control what causes fear, what your brain sees as dangerous. And understanding fear can help you choose to act in other ways besides running or fighting.

When fear rises, it can be hard to think clearly and keep your cool. But with practice, you can manage fear.____19____Brave people still feel fear like everyone else—the difference is in how they deal with it.

Practicing for scary situations can help you act properly and quickly without freezing up. If you are nervous about having to give a speech in front of a class or meeting, practicing can help you focus on the speech, not the fear. Fear is an uncontrollable reaction, but the way we deal with it is not. It takes practice to learn to stay calm in scary situations, but it can be done.____20____

    A. You can’t control fear.

    B. Fear can be a good thing.

    C. No one is actually fearless.

    D. Fear is a feeling with one job.

    E. Also, practice can quiet your fear.

    F. Your brain will tell you what to do.

    G. After all, learning is what the brain does best.

However, she was not confident of anyone helping her at all. Everyone looked too busy to notice her. Mabel asked a few people for help. But nobody stopped to lend or share an umbrella. Mabel began to feel disappointed. She was shocked that no one had agreed to help her. She had no choice but to stay where she was. She decided to wait for the rain to stop.
