Good books are essential for children. The best materials are the ones that not only entertain, but also expand the imagination, educate the mind, and let the next generation know that they have a place in this world. Here are some good books for you.

    New Kid

The book features the story of middle school student Jordan Banks, who struggles not only with being the new kid at a private school in the Bronx, but also with being an African American student in the midst of a mostly white class. In his acclaimed graphic novel, Jerry Craft addresses important issues of race and class through lively visuals and a likable protagonist.

    The Undefeated

It was written by Kwame Alexander and drawn by Kadir Nelson. The poem details the history of African Americans, emphasizing the triumphs of the civil rights movement as well as the trauma of slavery, along with the mention of several globally known heroes. There are also quotes from influential figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Langston Hughes and alongside there are beautiful illustrations from Nelson.

    Other Words for Home

The character of Jude teaches us empathy as we read what it’s like to be a young teenager immigrating from Somalia trying to fit in in America. She tries to learn the English language while tackling discrimination and classmates unwilling to understand and accept her, including her cousin of the same age. Jasmine Warga has created a story that is both powerful and gentle, big but full of small moments, a happy but sad story that will live in your heart.”

If plastic had been invented when the Pilgrims sailed from Plymouth, England, to North America - and their Mayflower had been stocked with bottled water and plastic-wrapped snacks, their plastic waste would likely still be around four centuries later. Atlantic waves and sunlight would have worn all that plastic into tiny bits. And those bits might still be floating around the world’s oceans today, waiting to be eaten by some fish or oyster, and finally perhaps by one of us.

Because plastic wasn’t invented until the late 19th century, and its production only really took off around 1950, we have a mere 9. 2 billion tons of the stuff to deal with. Of that, more than 6. 9 billion tons have become waste. And of that waste, a surprising 6. 3 billion tons never made it to a recycling bin - the figure that shocked the scientists who published the numbers in 2017.

No one knows how much unrecycled plastic waste ends up in the ocean, the earth’s last sink. In 2015, Jenna Jambeck, a University of Georgia engineering professor, caught everyone’s attention with a rough estimate: between 5. 3 million and 14 million tons of plastic waste each year just come from coastal regions.

Meanwhile, ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine( )animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. Some are harmed visibly, stuck by abandoned things made of plastic. Many more are probably harmed invisibly. Marine species of all sizes, from zooplankton to whales, now eat microplastics, the bits smaller than one-fifth of an inch across.

“This isn’t a problem where we don’t know what the solution is,” says Ted Siegler, a Vermont resource economist who has spent more than 25 years working with developing nations on garbage. “We know how to pick up garbage. Anyone can do it. We know how to deal with it. We know how to recycle.” It’s a matter of building the necessary institutions and systems, he says, ideally before the ocean turns into a thin soup of plastic.

    4. Why does the author mention the Pilgrims in paragraph 1?

    A. To prove plastic was difficult to invent.

    B. To introduce what marine animals like eating.

    C. To tell the Pilgrims contributed a lot to the marine protection.

    D. To show plastic waste has a lasting effect on the ocean.

    5. What’s the main trouble marine animals face according to the text?

    A. Lacking protection. B. Being stuck by plastics.

    C. Being caught by humans. D. Treating plastics as food.

    6. What does Ted Siegler want to tell us in the last paragraph?

    A. Some people don’t know the solution of plastics waste.

    B. Plastics will turn the ocean into a soup of plastic.

    C. It’s time to take measures to deal with plastic waste.

    D. People should avoid using plastics to protect the ocean.

    7. From which is the text probably taken?

    A. A biology textbook. B. A travel brochure.

    C. An environmental report. D. A lifestyle magazine.

    C

So many things can obstruct you seeing your loved ones in person, from busy schedules to long distances to a rather unexpected severe disease. Fortunately, due to modern technology, the people we miss are often only a phone call or text message away. But if you're someone who's more likely to type out messages than verbal ones, you may want to reconsider.

A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, found that communication interactions that included voice, like a phone call or video chat, created stronger social bonds than communication through typing, like text messaging or email.

In the study, researchers used various experiments to measure connectedness. In one, they asked 200 people to make predictions about what it would be like to reconnect with an old friend by email or by phone and then appointed people at random to do one or the other. Although people expected that a phone call would be more awkward, hearing someone's voice actually made the experience better and they didn’t feel awkward. In another experiment, it was found that both forms of voice communication—whether video or audio only—made the strangers feel significantly more connected than when they communicated via text.

Sabrina Romanoff, a Harvard trained clinical psychologist, says people tend to text or email instead of calling because of convenience, as they see it as a controlled form of communication where they can “correspond information exactly in the way they intend without unexpected additions by the other person.”

Romanoff says that each party is more present in the phone call, and therefore, able to understand the meaning behind the content without ruminating on the endless possible meanings behind words and punctuation. “In reality, a text message can make it hard to determine the true meaning behind a conversation, but a phone call is actually more convenient when considering the real effects of the message.”

    8. What may help you to see your friend living in another country immediately?

    A. The busy work B. Long distances

    C. An unexpected severe disease D. A phone call or text message

    9. What can we learn about the study?

    A. Only one experiment was done for the study.

    B. Less than 200 people took part.

    C. In another experiment, the result of the former test was proved.

    D. The participants still thought phone call was more awkward after the test.

    10. What is the reason for people preferring a text message to a phone call?

    A. People can convey meanings more precisely without being interrupted.

    B. People think a text message is more formal than voice communication.

    C. People hate to hear the voice of the people they connect with.

    D. People do not believe what others said in the phone.

    11. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph refer to?

    A. changing slowly B. thinking deeply C. standing quietly D. disagreeing strongly

    D

Chung Sun-hee breaks eggshells into a powder, dries and saves her coffee grounds, and cuts large vegetable offcuts into smaller pieces. Later, the 5-year-old professional translator will bury them in her backyard, in plots of earth that are given plenty of time to compost before being reused. She will plant tomatoes and corn in the resulting soil. When we lived in an apartment, I would throw away all my food waste into the shared collection containers," Chung said. “But now, I compost almost all of it."

Chung is one of a growing number of city residents who are getting into urban farming, not just to grow their own vegetables, but also as an exercise in waste reduction. “Reducing food waste and the urban farming movement are very closely linked," said Chung. Her new habits reflect a larger change that is taking place in South Korea's heavily populated capital. The country's government banned sending food to landfills in 2005 and, in 2013, also prohibited pouring liquid garbage into the sea. Today, 95 percent food waste is recycleda remarkable progress from less than 2 percent in 1995. Seoul has managed to cut the amount of food waste produced by 400 tons per day.

Walk along any residential street in Seoul and you'll see why. On Chung’ s street residents emerge at dusk to put small yellow bags in special waste collection containers. Since 2013, South Koreans have been required by law to throw food waste in these bags, priced according to volume and costing the average four person family about $6 a month. By purchasing them from the local convenience store or supermarket, residents are effectively paying a tax on their food waste ahead. In Seoul, this tax pays for about 60 percent of the cost of collecting and processing the city's food waste.

    12. What does Chung do with her food waste now?

    A. She buries it in her backyard. B. She throws it into a container.

    C. She uses it directly to plant crops. D. She deals with it in a recyclable way.

    13. What can we infer from the data in paragraph 2?

    A. South Koreans are accustomed to urban farming.

    B. Chung's habits have great impacts on people in Seoul.

    C. South Korea has made a big success in waste reduction.

    D. Chung has to take further action to deal with food waste.

    14. How do residents pay a tax on their food waste in advance?

    A. By buying small yellow bags. B. By giving it to tax departments.

    C. By purchasing food from supermarkets. D. By spending money on collection containers.

    15. What is the best title for the text?

A How to Reduce Food Waste B. Why We Shouldn’t Waste Food

    C. The Woman Composting Food Waste D. The Country Winning the Battle on Food Waste
