Scientists have fund smething strange has been happening amng sensitive bird species in the Brazilian Amazn in recent years. Jirinec’s findingsare cntained in a new study published in the jurnal Science Advances last Friday.
The study examined 77 species ver a 40-year perid, during which time the rainfrest had becme warmer. It fund they were rapidly evlving perhaps because smaller birds remve heat mre efficiently as they have mre surface area in relatin t vlume. Brian Weeks f the University f Michigan explained it this way: “Yu culd imagine lts f little ice cubes in a glass f water, as ppsed t ne big ice cube, and the little ice cubes melt faster because smaller things have larger surface area-t-vlume ratis(比),s they exchange heat mre quickly. “Weeks didn’t wrk n this particular study, but he did research the size f mre than50 species f migratry (迁徙的) birds in Nrth America a few years back. He t fund that nearly all f them were shrinking decade by decade.
The tw studies strengthen the idea that birds all ver the planet migratry r nt, may be changing shape due t a warming climate. Weeks said these srts f changes shuld cncern all f us. “All arund the wrld, peple depend n natural systems. Cmplete natural systems prvide mre ecnmic benefits t humanity than the entirety f the wrld’s GDP, s they matter t yu whether r nt yu knw it, Weeks said. Jirinec thught the timing f his paper’s publicatin culd nt be mre fitting. The study came ut n the same day as the cnclusin f the UN climate change cnference in Glasgw. S thse results really stressed the cmmn cnsequences f the actins fr the planet.
    8. What was a cause f the birds becming smaller in size?

Munting evidence suggests that lngtime sitting — a main part f mdern-day life — is risky t yur health, even if yu exercise regularly. Based n these findings, dctrs advise all adults t sit less and mve mre. But hw ften d we need t get up frm ur chairs? And fr hw lng?
Few studies have cmpared multiple ptins t cme up with the answer mst ffice wrkers want: What is the least amunt f activity needed t cunteract the health effects f a wrkday filled with sitting?
Nw a study by Clumbia University exercise physilgists has an answer. Unlike ther studies that test ne r tw activity ptins, the study tested five different exercise “snacks”, r shrt bursts f activity after a perid f time’s sitting: ne minute f walking after every 30 minutes f sitting, ne minute after 60 minutes, five minutes every 30, five minutes every 60 and n walking.
The prper amunt f mvement, the researchers fund, was five minutes f walking every 30 minutes. This was the nly amunt that greatly lwered bth bld sugar and bld pressure. In additin, this walking rutine had an impressive effect n hw the participants respnded t large meals, reducing bld sugar spikes (峰值) by 58% cmpared with sitting all day. Taking a walking break every 30 minutes fr ne minute als prvided mdest benefits fr bld sugar levels thrughut the day, while walking every 60 minutes, either fr ne minute r five minutes, prvided n benefit.
What we knw nw is that fr best health, yu need t mve regularly at wrk, in additin t a daily exercise rutine. While that may sund impractical, the findings shw that even small amunts f walking spread thrugh the wrk day can greatly lwer yur risk f heart disease and ther chrnic (慢性的) illnesses.
    12. What des the study by Clumbia University fcus n?
    A. What adults shuld d t keep exercising regularly.
    B. When and where we need t sit less and mve mre.
    C. Why lngtime sitting every day is risky t ur health.
    D. Hw ften and hw lng we need t walk frm ur chairs.
13 What des the underlined wrd “cunteract” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Cancel ut.B. Give up.C. Add t.D. Benefit frm.
    14. Which walking pattern is the mst useful fr health accrding t the text?
    A. One minute f walking after every 30 minutes f sitting.
    B. Five minutes f walking after every 30 minutes f sitting.
    C. One minute f walking after every 60 minutes f sitting.
    D. Five minutes f walking after every 60 minutes f sitting.
    15. What des the last paragraph shw?
    A. The risks f heart disease and ther illnesses.
    B. The daily exercise rutine suitable fr everyne.
    C. The suggestins n the health f the ffice staff.
    D. The ways f mving regularly at wrk every day.
