Studies suggest that when given a task, we think f hw much time is available t cmplete the task instead f hw much time we actually need. This mindset, r Parkinsn’s Law as psychlgists put it, results in wasted time and inefficient wrkflws.
One reasn why this phenmenn happens lies in hw peple tend t apprach tasks. By fcusing n hw much time we have t d smething, we assume that the task will require that much time. Parkinsn’s Law isn’t a magic frmula(公式) r a fixed rule. But it is an bservatin yu can use t help yu becme mre prductive. Let’s lk at a few ways yu can apply Parkinsn’s Law t yur life, get yur t-d list checked ff quicker, and spend less f the wrkday filling in time just t lk busy.
As yu get started, make a list f yur tasks, and determine the amunt f time it takes t cmplete them. If yu can give yurself half that time t cmplete each task, yu can avid falling int the prcrastinatin(拖延) trap.
Get better at judging time. Sme tasks may be accurate t begin with, and sme may be inflated if yu are nt used t using Parkinsn’s Law. A timer is ging t be very useful when yu start ding this.
Avid setting arbitrary deadlines and instead think abut hw lng a task will realistically take t cmplete. While this might nt be clear, cnsider past experiences as a guide.

Accrding t America’s histrical statistics, fr example, their ccupatin was ften unhelpfully listed as “wife”. S Gldin set ut t measure their wrk prperly.
The standard pattern f develpment was nce that as cuntries gt richer, wmen were pulled int the labur market. But by painstakingly stitching tgether different data sets, Gldin established that America’s path was mre cmplicated, and that grwth in the 1800s cincided with wmen mving away frm wrk ther than dmestic labur.
Why? Fr a start, factry jbs were harder t cmbine with childcare than, say, sewing at hme. And richer families culd affrd t spare wmen the indignity f til. Gldin argued that stigma(污名) reinfrced this, r the idea that “nly a husband wh is lazy and neglectful f his family wuld allw his wife t d such labur.” Later the stigma faded—the ffice clerk jb f the 20th century was easier, and cnsistent with the impressin f a supprtive spuse. The Amazn rainfrest is the largest rainfrest in the wrld, and it cvers an area f 27 millin square miles. The majrity f the frest is cntained within Brazil, abut 60% f the rainfrest, fllwed by Peru with 13% and Clmbia with 10%. (17) (18) It is said t be arund fifty-five millin years ld. Mre than 30 millin peple f 350different ethnic grups live in the Amazn. Here, peple can find ne in ten f the knwn plant and animal species n the earth. Many insects, birds, and plants still haven’t been discvered. Many f these die ut every day. This is partly due t the extreme weather, but it mstly has t d with the effects human beings have had n the natural envirnment.(19) The Amazn sustains life by prviding clean water, life-saving medicines and frest prducts.
Unfrtunately, humans are destrying parts f the rainfrest by building dams and mines and cutting dwn trees.
Scientists are wrrying that if this cntinues, they may nt discver any new frms f medicine, which have always been treatments fr diseases. (20) We depend n a healthy Amazn s we shuld prtect it tgether.题序
