But lgging in a trpical frest lks different t the practices we might expect t see. “We might imagine it as a wasteland f stumps(树桩) after a clear cut,” says Ellis. Researchers have designed a hand-held device that can btain and change water mlecules (分子) frm the air int drinkable water using nly surrunding sunlight as its energy surce.
This atmspheric water harvester (大气层水分收集器) used an ultra-prus (超多孔的) material, knwn as a metal-rganic framewrk (MOF). It can btain water repeatedly in the httest and driest place in Nrth America, Death Valley Natinal Park. The tests shwed the device culd prvide clean water anywhere, addressing an urgent prblem, as climate change speeds up drught cnditins.
“Almst ne-third f the wrld’s ppulatin lives in water-stressed areas. The UN predicts that almst 5 billin peple n ur planet will experience sme kind f water stress fr a significant part f the year 2050,”said Omar Yaghi. He is the Berkeley chemistry prfessr wh invented MOFs and is leading this study. “It is very imprtant t take advantage f a new surce fr water.”
Other kinds f materials, such as salts r hydrgels (水凝胶), cannt perate in extreme weather cnditins in an energy-efficient manner. The new MOF-pwered harvesters can be a pwerful tl t address water shrtage issues related t anything frm drinking water t agriculture. This technlgy can als be used t btain pure water in areas where water is plentiful but nt clean.
It’s als extremely efficient at harvesting water, releasing 85 t 90 percent f the water it btains.
