The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter,I couldn’t wait to get her to school.I,as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slow language development.
As I accompanied her into the car,I felt desperate.Nothing was right with our world. She’d been born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession. My job and my house had been victims. Then this happened. My child’s language delay was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her.I felt like we both needed to be rescued.
I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with the little girl I loved as when I left.Walking slowly toward the school’s playground gate,I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me.
“You should have seen her today!” His breathy words were supported by excitement.I didn’t interrupt.“See that climber.” He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall.I nodded.“Well, every day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top.” He took a breath.“And today she did it!”
He expressed his joy just as he’d witnessed her defeating Mount Qomolangma!“She cheered and celebrated!I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me.My daughter had beat her mountain.
As she ran toward me,I recognized something I hadn’t before.I saw her perseverance(毅力).I saw her strength.I saw a hero.

In this Pennsylvania city,Pittsburgh is shrinking but getting wealthier.Since 2000,its population has declined by 95,000 while its income per capita (人均) has shot up 24 percent. The trend is taking hold in many other cities, like Buffalo in New York,Providence in Rhode Island and New Orleans.
Some of these areas have created more high-paying jobs in energy, health care or education.Others have managed to reshape their manufacturing (制造业) for a new economy.Higher-paying jobs have a greater effect because they create demand for additional services.“The story in Pittsburgh is very positive, and other areas are looking at it as an example of the transformation that might be possible,” said Guhan Venkatu, who wrote an economic history of the area called “Rust and Renewal” for the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.
Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have helped bring tech jobs and innovation (革新) to the area by sponsoring tech centers that help graduates start companies without moving to Silicon Valley or San Francisco. This has helped keep Pittsburgh’s educated young population growing even as the entire population in the city has dropped.
Pittsburgh has more STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) jobs than other shrinking cities, about 80,000 or 7% of all jobs.STEM jobs add productivity and income growth to the area.Manufacturers of high-tech medical equipment in the Pittsburgh area also have doubled employment in the last 10 years.
However, some experts question whether growing income per capita can really make up for a declining population.According to Patrick Adler,a researcher at the University of Toronto, population loss does matter if it means lower-skilled workers have fled because of a lack of opportunity. What’s more,high-paying jobs in education and health care can disappear if the population declines too greatly. So it’d be wise to find ways to increase the population.
28.In what aspect does Pittsburgh set a good example?
    A.Transforming new energy.
    B.Creating more well-paid jobs.
    C.Prohibiting the manufacturing.
    D.Sponsoring higher education.
29.How do some academic institutions help with the local economy?
A.By helping to attract more talents from other areas.
B.By providing much technical support to local companies.
C.By successfully keeping educated youths working locally.
D.By assisting in employing a large number of educated youths.
30.Why is Patrick Adler mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To show the disadvantage of a declining population.
B.To give a suggestion about increasing population.
C.To raise doubts about growing income per capita.
D.To tell a reason why lower-skilled workers flee.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How Fast Job Growth Is Related to Population Growth
    B.How Less-crowded Cities Plan Their High-tech Economy
C.Why Some Cities are Losing People but Getting Wealthier
D.Why Some Cities are Suffering From a Shrinking Population

    D
Why have so many awards ceremonies appeared recently?Shakespeare never won a prize, nor did Leonardo da Vinci or Adam Smith or Charles Dickens.
It would be possible to say, however, that in the past, scientists and artists could win“support” from rich people—a king or a lord would give the artist or scientist money to have them paint their palaces or help them develop new ways of making money. With the change in social systems across the world, this no longer happens.A lot of scientific research is now either funded by the state or by private companies.Perhaps awards ceremonies are just the most recent face of this process.
However, there is more to it than that. When a film wins an Oscar, many more people will go and see it or buy the DVD.When a writer wins the Nobel prize, many more people will buy his or her books. When a group wins the MTV awards, the ceremony is seen by hundreds of thousands of people across the world. The result?Undoubtedly, the group will sell lots more records.
Most awards ceremonies are now sponsored by big organizations or companies. This means that it is not only the person who wins the award that benefits but also the sponsors. The MTV awards, for example, are great for publicizing not only music but also MTV itself!
On the surface,it seems to be a“win-win” situation, with everyone being happy, but let me ask you two questions—how far do you think that publicity and marketing are winning here, and how much genuine recognition of achievement is taking place?
32.Why are some successful people like Shakespeare mentioned at the beginning of the passage?
    A.To show great admiration.
    B.To answer the question.
    C.To prepare for the topic.
    D.To provide the background.
33.Artists and scientists used to receive money from .
    A.rich people’s support
    B.the government
    C.different awards
    D.sales of their works
34.The writer thinks awards actually do a better job in .
A.getting the winners’ great achievements recognized
B.earning more money for the awards ceremony sponsors
C.improving the status of the greatest scientists or artists
    D.financially supporting a scientist’s or an artist’s work
35.What is the writer’s attitude towards awards ceremonies?
    A.Subjective. B.Indifferent.
    C.Doubtful. D.Approving.

Two years after announcing strict volunteer requirements for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and 61 (realize) they could not get enough help for free, the Japanese ministry has instead turned to universities and their great human 62 (resource).
In the past few weeks,to encourage students to volunteer for the Olympics,a large number of universities 63 (begin) to offer academic credits.According to a survey,64 percent of universities in Tokyo—both 64 (nation) and private—are now considering that option.
While rewarding student volunteers 65 credits to advance their undergraduate programs 66 (be) a nice gesture, the move also makes clear that the Olympic Committee does not want to pay for highly-skilled individuals 67 must speak a foreign language, and work over ten full days...Not to mention that they must pass 68 interview.
The move also raises the question of what it means to volunteers. It’s quite obvious by now that there isn’t enough people 69 (fill) the 110,000 vacant positions.
Offering academic credits to Japanese students seems like the wrong way to encourage volunteerism, but precious time is going by for the Olympic Committee. If they can’t get the 70 (require) 110,000 volunteers soon,an army of emotionless robots might just work.

W:Beautiful. The water is clean. And there’re so many people fishing in it.
M:Can you believe it was very dirty two years ago?People threw waste into it and it smelled so terrible that it made you sick to walk along it and breathe the air near it.
W:So you must have done a great deal to make it clean.
M:Indeed. But we owe many thanks to our new mayor,Mr.Turner.
    W:Why?
M:Many mayors before him didn’t pay any attention to the dirty river. It was Turner who thought of the best way to make the river clean.
    W:What was it?
M:Once he took office two years ago he ordered two trucks to be driven along both sides to collect the rubbish every day.
W:The river soon began to get clean after people stopped polluting it.
    M:Yes.

The World Festival of Youth and Students is an international event, jointly organized by the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY),a youth organization and the International Union of Students since 1947.
The largest festival was the 5th one, held in Moscow in 1957,when 34,000 young people from 131 countries attended the event. It was at this festival that the song Moscow Nights was first presented to so many young people from all over the world, and then it went on to become perhaps the most widely recognized Russian song in the world. In terms of the number of the attending countries, the largest festival was the 13th,held in Pyongyang,North Korea,in 1989 when 177 countries attended the event.
During the Cold War many festivals were held in capitals of Communist states because it required an enormous amount of money to support such a youth festival. As a result,in the 1960s the festivals were criticized by some countries because they said the festivals promoted communist ideas too much.
In early 2008 Belarus proposed the 2009 festival be held in one of its cities,Minsk. But soon the country withdrew the proposal. And the festival was put off until the end of 2010.In February,2010,WFDY,the main organizer of the festival, decided to hold the festival in South Africa from December 13th to 21st,2010.

根据第一段中“I,as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slow language development.”及第二段中“I felt like we both needed to be rescued.”
根据第二段第一句“As I accompanied her into the car,I felt desperate.”和第三段第一句“I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with the little girl I loved as when I left.”

根据第二段第一句中“scientists and artists could win ‘support’ from rich people—a king or a lord would give the artist or scientist money to have them paint their palaces or help them develop new ways of making money.” 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段倒数第二句“This means that it is not only the person who wins the award that benefits but also the sponsors.”

由句首时间状语“In the past few weeks”可知,此处应使用现在完成时,主语是universities,故填have begun。
    67.who/that 考查定语从句。

Last weekend I went fishing with my cousins by a river, wherewhich was two miles away from my home by bike. When we were about to return
home,we found one of our bikebikes lost.We were really nervous then.AskingAsked about the lost bike, nobody told the truth except me.AndBut/Yet to my surprise,my parents don’tdidn’t scold me.Instead, they said I was aan honest boy.I have benefited greatgreatly from my family rules.I’m not the best at school work, but my classmates trust me and nearly everyone ∧is willing to make friends with me.It helps me knowingknow better about “Honesty is the best policy”.
    第七处:a→an 冠词后的honest以元音音素开头,其前应使用an。
第九处:willing前加上is 此处考查be willing to do sth.结构。
    第十处:knowing→know 由句意可知,此处应使用help sb. do sth.
