    第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
    第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。A
On February 22, 2021, cancer survivor Hayley Areeneaux was selected to be one of four crew members of the SpaceX Inspiration4 — the world’s first civilian astronaut mission. The 29-year-old will make history as the youngest American — and the first with a false limb — to travel to space.
Hayley’s space dreams began two decades ago, however, the young girl’s dreams were derailed a year later when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma — a type of bone cancer. Fortunately, the fatal disease had been caught early and the experts at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis were able to reduce its spread through chemotherapy. Arceneaux said she never thought she would be able to go to space. But when the call came “out of the blue” from Jared Isaacman, CEO and founder of Shift4 Payments, asking her if she would like to go to space, she said without hesitation, “Yes, yes, absolutely!”
Isaacman had always intended to go to space. Hence when SpaceX announced the world’s first all-commercial astronaut mission, the 37-year-old billionaire, instantly booked the available four seats. The flying enthusiast announced that he would donate three seats to members of the general public. Hayley, the first crew member to be announced, will represent the pillar (支柱) of “hope” — a nod to her survival of cancer and frontline work as a physician at St. Jude. The remaining passengers, representing the pillars of “generosity” and “prosperity”, will be chosen randomly to raise $200 million for St. Jude, which treats children at no charge.
Before the mission launch later this year, the crew will undergo intense training. The mission, which will orbit Earth every 90 minutes, will be carefully monitored by SpaceX mission control scientists from Earth. Upon the mission’s completion, the Dragon will reenter Earth’s atmosphere for a soft water landing off the coast of Florida.
21.What does the underlined phrase “out of the blue” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A.Sadly. B.Suddenly. C.Randomly. D.Strangely.
22.Why would Jared Isaacman donate the last two seats to members of the general public?
    A.To promote his company’s products
B.To seek help for disabled children.
C.To inspire interests in space travel.
D.To raise funds for a cancer hospital.
23.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Hayley Arceneaux Became The Youngest American travelling in Space
B.“The Sky Is Not Even The Limit” For Jared Isaacman
C.Cancer Survivor To Become The Youngest American In Space
D.Hayley’s Space Dreams Were Derailed By Osteosarcoma

    B
Different parts of a health care system have different focuses. A hospital's stroke(中风) unit monitors blood flow in the brain. The cardiac(心脏的) unit is interested in that same flow, but through and from the heart. Each collection of equipment and data is effective in its own field. Thus, like the story of blind men feeling an elephant, modern health care offers many separate pictures of a patient, but rarely a useful united one.
On top of all this, the instruments that doctors use to monitor health are often expensive, as is the training required to use them. That combined cost is too high for the medical system to scan the body regularly for early signs of illness, so patients are at risk of heart disease or a stroke.
An unusual research project called AlzEye, run by Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, in cooperation with University College London (UCL), may change this. It is attempting to use the eye as a window through which signals about the health of other organs could be discovered. The doctors in charge of it, Siegfried Wagner and Pearse Keane, are studying Moorfields' database of eye scans, which offers a detailed picture of the health of the retina(视网膜).
The project will go a step further: with the information about other aspects of patients' health collected from other hospitals around England, doctors will be able to look for more accurate signs of disease through eye scans.
The Moorfields' data set has lots of linked cases to work with—far more than any similar project. For instance, the U.K. Biobank, one of the world's leading databases of medical data about individual people, contains 631 cases of a "major cardiac adverse event". The Moorfields' data contain about 12,000 such cases. The Biobank has data on about 1,500 stroke patients. Moorfields has 11,900. For the disease, dementia(老年痴呆), on which the Moorfields' project will focus to start with, the data set holds 15,100 cases. The only comparable study has 86.
Wagner and Keane are searching for patterns in the eye that show the emergence of disease elsewhere in the body. If such patterns could be recognized reliably, the potential impact would be huge.
    24. Why does the author mention "the story of blind men feeling an elephant" in Paragraph 1?
    A. To claim the ineffectiveness of our health care system.
    B. To tell the similarity in various health care units.
    C. To explain the limitation of modem health care.
    D. To show the complexity of patients' pictures.
    25. How does AlzEye work?
    A. By thoroughly examining one's body organs.
    B. By identifying one's state of health through eye scans.
    C. By helping doctors discover one's disease of the eye.
    D. By comparing the eye-scan data from different hospitals.
    26. What can be inferred about the Moorfields' project from Paragraph 5?
    A. It takes advantage of abundantly available medical data.
    B. It makes the collection of medical data more convenient.
    C. It improves the Moorfields' competitiveness in the medical field.
    D. It strengthens data sharing between the Moorfields and the Biobank.
    C
A star athlete at the college where I work recently stopped by my office. After committing a few unforced errors during a weekend match, she was torn apart by self-criticism. “I can’t stop beating myself up,” she told me. “I’m at peak fitness, and I practice hard. How is this happening?”
Many students I teach, like this athlete, believe that all-nighters in the library and hours on the field should get them exactly where they need to go. When they fall short of what they imagine they should accomplish, they are crushed by self-blame.
We talk often about young adults struggling with failure because their parents have protected them from discomfort. But there is something else at play among the most privileged in particular: a false promise that they can achieve anything if they are willing to work for it.
Psychologists have sourced this phenomenon to a misapplication of “mind-set” research, which has found that praising children for effort will increase academic performance. But a 2018 analysis found that while praising effort over ability may benefit high-risk or economically disadvantaged students, it does not necessarily help everyone.
The cruel, messy reality is that you can do everything in your power and still fail. Instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their way, we should all question a culture that has taught them that feeling anything less than overwhelmed means they’re lazy, and that where they go to college matters more than the kind of person they are. It’s suggested that parents and teachers spend time helping students find purpose, or goals they genuinely love to pursue and that make an impact on the world, which may help them gain greater life satisfaction and become more psychologically mature.
The point is not to give our kids a pass on working hard. But we would be wise to remind our kids that life has a way of sucker-punching(出其不意地击打) us when we least expect it. It’s often the people who learn to say “stuff happens” who get up the fastest.
27.Which sort of students does the star athlete belong to?
A.Those lacking courage to make self-criticism. B.Those tired of working all night in the library.
C.Those believing hard work surely pay off. D.Those overprotected by their parents in life.
28.What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A.Praising effort over ability will surely be beneficial to all kids.
B.Parents should lay more emphasis on their kids’ academic performance.
C.The result of the “mindset” research doesn’t apply to all cases.
D.Whether praising kids’ effort over ability does good to kids depends.
29.According to the author, how can parents help the kids overcome barriers in life?
A.By encouraging them to stick to a worthy cause that they truly love.
B.By discouraging them from working hard.
C.By choosing where to go to college for them.
D.By pushing them to fight against the cruel reality.
30.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Students don't care about failure at all.
B.Students with positive attitudes can move on more easily.
C.Students should bear all the failures on their own.
D.Students are sure to succeed if they try their best.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项
With the weather getting colder and the days becoming shorter, some people are noticing they have less energy and aren't feeling as positive as they usually do. 31 This type of depression is known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Researchers aren't yet clear on what causes SAD, but it's likely to be complex. Some research suggests it could be due to a malfunctioning hypothalamus (下丘脑功能不全) or producing too much melatonin (a hormone which controls our sleep-wake cycle). Some researchers theorize it could also be due to having a disrupted circadian rhythm(昼夜节奏混乱). 32 For example, some research has indicated that women may be more likely to experience SAD — though, due to a lack of specific research, it's uncertain whether these gender differences really exist and if so, why.
Some people notice that their symptoms start to improve when the seasons begin to change and spring approaches. 33 For people with SAD, the main recommended treatments include psychological treatments or taking medicine. Research shows that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for SAD. 34 Given it's still an emerging therapy, research on it remains inconsistent with other treatments.
Aside from seeking professional help, there are a couple of other things that people can do to help them cope with SAD during their day. 35 The researchers of the study had participants either go for a daily one-hour outdoor walk or use a low-dose artificial light box for 30 minutes per day for a period of one week. The participants who went for a daily walk showed significant improvements in all depressive symptoms, compared to those exposed to artificial light.

    A. Colder weather and less daylight may have you feeling a bit more down lately.
    B. Research also shows that lifestyle factors can play an important role in both causing and managing depression.
    C. According to one study, getting more natural light during the day may help improve symptoms.
    D. Of course, there may be other factors at play too.
    E. But this doesn't mean that there aren't many things people can do during the winter months to help them cope with their symptoms.
    F. While these feelings may be temporary for some, around one in three people consistently struggle through the autumn and winter months.
    G. Light therapy is also currently being investigated as a treatment for SAD.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事
One day, when I was at Lens Crafters waiting to pick up my new pair of glasses, a Mom and her little girl came in. Mom looked to be in her late 30's but was probably a lot younger and the little girl was maybe five or six with a pair of sparkling blue eyes. Both of their wardrobes were clean and tidy but badly dated to say the least. It was obvious that the family’s financial windfall (意外之财) had not yet arrived.
The Mom politely expressed their intention to the Sales Lady that they were searching for a pair of glasses for the little girl’s first day of school and added that she was in between job 1 and job 2 of the day, so she didn't have a lot of time.
The little girl and the Mom were led around the store looking at these little tiny frames for this darling's face. The Sales Lady was helping them try on frames; pulling aside her favorites. You know how some little kids actually look ten times cuter in glasses...that was this little girl. She found these cute little frames with a butterfly on them and her face just glowed… A smile ear to ear while she looked back at herself in the mirror.
“We’ll take it.” said Mom in a cheerful voice.
“It’s 20 dollars, Madam.” the Sales Lady replied with a smile.
Mom carefully pulled out a coupon (优惠券) and a $10 note from her pocket. The Sales Lady stared blankly at the coupon. She then explained for some reason this coupon could not be honored, pointing out the mini print at the bottom. The Mom was apparently frozen for a second and then chatted back and forth with the Sales Lady for a bit. Finally the Mom leaned down to her daughter and explained to her that there would be no glasses today, maybe next month.

    Possible version:
The little girl’s eyes started to tear up. Mom leaned in a little closer and told her it would be OK , and that she was just confused and needed a little more time to save up for the glasses. The little girl responded with, "But Mommy, I can't see and I want to be able to see when I start school next week. I want to do good, Mommy! What if I'm in the back?" Mom bent down explaining the importance of having strength when we don't get what we need sometimes, etc.
Watching this, the Sales Lady decided to help. She had let some small print on a coupon beat out her natural human compassion. She went over and bent down next to the little girl, holding the frames, not without tears herself, and said, "Do you like these frames sweetie?" The little girl fought through her tears and nodded her head Yes. The sales lady apologized to Mom informing her that she just realized that she actually she had misread the coupon and that there would be no problem honoring it.

W: Not really. Adventure stories are my favorite. ⑨Actually I need books for my younger brother. He is turning fourteen this weekend.
M: How about buying the Harry Potter series for him?
W: He read those books two years ago, (10)but he hasn’t read The Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games yet.
M: Will you buy both of the series for him?
W: No. (10)Just the latter. I don’t have so much money today.
    Text 8夏令营活动
W: Honey, what are you doing on the Internet?
M: I’m reading about a summer day camp. Have you ever heard about Mount Tom?
W: Yes, the boy living next door took part in the camp last summer. However, (11)I’m more concerned with what participants think of it than anything else.
M: Well, it’s a traditional summer day camp and a leader in early childhood programs. It’s conveniently located to all areas of Lower Westchester.
W: So what can kids do in the camp?
M: It can help them make new friends and learn life skills. (12)Teachers and coaches help campers learn and enhance social, athletic and cultural skills every minute of every day. The pools, fields and courts provide the perfect space for campers to participate in over 50 developmentally appropriate, fun-filled activities.
W: That sounds not bad. Who can go to the camp?
M: Children aged from 3 to 14. What about letting Jason go to it this summer? I don’t want him to stay indoors every day.
W: OK. Let’s talk about it with him after he comes back from school today.
    Text 9人物访谈——与老虎的不解之缘
W: Welcome to join us today, Mr. Shole. Your story with a female tiger has become famous on social media. Could you tell us something about it, please?
M: OK. (14)The tiger was just three months old then when I met it for the first time. Its owner asked me to watch over it. Since then the tiger and I have become inseparable.
W: Sounds interesting. Do you often play with the tiger?
M: Yes. It’s not aggressive or angry at all, however, heavy steel bars are installed for it. It sleeps in an enclosure at night and sometimes I spend my nights there with it, sleeping right next to it.
    W: Is the tiger big?
M: Yes. (15)The average weight of the common females of this species is 140 kilograms, but it is 40 kilograms overweight.
W: That’s quite a lot, even for tigers. How long is it?
M: Three meters, and its height is one meter.
W: So how often does it eat?
M: (16)It eats twice a day. The menu includes about 6 kilograms of meat of different varieties each meal.
W: Well, such a striking friendship between a young guy and a fairly young animal is really fantastic. (17)Thank you again for sharing your story with us tonight, Mr.Shole. And that’s all for today’s show.
    Text 10为国际生制定的健康保险计划
M: (18)Most universities and colleges in the United States have a health insurance plan for international students. It generally costs around$300 a year now. You may think it is a waste of money, but if you have even a small medical problem, the insurance will help you to pay the bills. So, you should buy a medical insurance when you arrive at the university. I am sure the International Students Office will help you with that. (19)Private doctors are the standard form of the medical care in America, but there are also college clinics, public and private clinics, etc. The quality of medical care can be different in these different places, so it would be better if you ask an American friend for advice before going to see a doctor. Before you leave China, I suggest you have a medical examination. If there is something wrong, you can have it cured in your own country. (20)Don’t forget to take your personal and family health records abroad with you. They provide important and useful information if you need to go to the hospital. But remember to take good care of yourself. Don’t work too hard.
