As you are soon on your way to Eastern Europe, here are a few tips on what you should pack. In general, pack lightly, with only the most basic clothes. People dress casually in Eastern Europe, so you don't need to bring along your smartest clothing.
At the risk of going against our own advice by weighing down your luggage, we suggest you consider bringing along the following things, which we find particularly useful in Eastern Europe.
Batteries:If your camera, flash,or other appliances run on batteries, bring enough supply along. Certain types of batteries don't exist in Eastern Europe, and those that do often don't last very long.
Calculator: Many travelers find it useful to figure out foreign exchange rates on a calculator. We suggest a credit-card calculator which fits into your wallet or purse.
Cash: We have found it good to have supply of small-unit U.S. bills ($l and $5) to use in hard-currency stores, to buy international train tickets, etc. The hard-currency stores never seem to have the right change, and thus you may lose out without some “pretty cash”on hand.
Electric Current Adapter: If you bring any appliances, remember that the electricity in Eastern Europe uses 220 volts A.C., not the standard 110 volts of North America. A 110 volts appliance will soon burn out when attached to an unchanged 220-volt plug. Get in touch with the Franzus Company, 352 Park Ave. South, New York, NY10010 (tel.212/889-5850), and ask for their booklet, "Foreign Electricity Is No Dark Secret".
Language Tools: One of Europe's big challenges is communicating with the local people since their languages are so different from our own. To help overcome difficulties, you might buy phrasebooks before you go -you won't find them once you are. in Eastern Europe.
If you are interested in learning an Eastern European language in more detail, we recommend the tape course produced by Audio Forum. In each course you listen to native speakers on a tape and follow along in a textbook. You can ask Audio Forum for their catalog at 96 Broad St., Guiford, CT06437 (tel. toll free 800/243-1234).
Money Belt: A money belt is especially helpful when you have many documents to carry around (as you always do in Eastern Europe). The best one we find is made by Eagle Greek Travel Gear, 143 Cedros Ave. (P. O. box.651), Solona Beach, CA 92075 (tel. 6197755 -9399, or toll free 800/874-9925) outside California.
Traveler's Checks: These are necessary. Bring your traveler's checks in small to medium unit ($10, $20, or $50) to change a little bit at a time, so as not to be left with a lot of local money. To be on the safe side, be sure to copy down the check numbers in two places, just in case something happens to the checks.
    36. Which of the following sections deal with money matters?
    A. Cash & Money Belt
    B. Money Belt & Calculator
    C. Cash & Traveler's Checks
    D. Calculator & Electric Current Adapter
    37. Eagle Creek Travel Gear is a company producing ______.
    A. calculators B. tapes
    C. electric current adapters D. money belts
    38. Which of the following is NOT a fact according to the passage?
    A. No shop in Eastern Europe accepts hard currency.
    B. Travelers may need to carry many documents in Eastern Europe.
    C. The electricity in Eastern Europe uses 220 volts A. C.

I have a particular lunch bag kept with me for maybe 14 years. But actually it belongs to my daughter, Molly.
Soon after she came of school age,she became an enthusiastic participant in packing lunches for herself, her brothers and me. Each bag got a share of sandwiches, apples, milk and sometimes a note. One morning,Molly handed me two bags, one regular lunch sack and the other one with paper clips (纸夹) on it.
    “Why two bags?””
“The other one is something else. ”
    “What's in it?”
“Just some stuff. Please take it with you.”she replied and then I put both sacks into my briefcase, kissed the child and rushed off At midday, after having my lunch from one bag, I opened the other one and shook out the things inside. Two hair ribbons, three small stones, a plastic dinosaur, a tiny seashell, two animal crackers, a marble, a used lipstick, a small doll, two chocolate kisses and 13 pennies.
I thought they were useless, and then threw them into the wastebasket.
That evening Molly came to stand beside me while I was reading the paper.
    “Where's my bag?”
    “What bag?”
“You know the one I gave you this morning.”
“I left it at the office, why?”
"I forgot to put this note in it.“She handed over the note, "Besides, I want it back.”
    “why?”
“Those are my things in the sack, Daddy, the ones I really like. I thought you might be very happy to play with them like me, but now I want them back. You didn't lose the bag, did you, Daddy?”Tears welled up in her eyes.
“Oh, no. I just forgot to bring it home.”I lied, “Bring it tomorrow. Okay?”
As she hugged my neck with relief, I found the words on the note —“I love you, Daddy.”I felt moved as well as a little ashamed. I looked at the face of my child for a long time.
Molly had given me her treasures -all that a 7-year-old considered important. That was “Love” in a paper sack. But not only had I missed it, but also 1 had thrown it away because “there wasn't anything in there I needed.”
The next morning, after kissing my girl,I hurried to my office. I picked up the wastebasket and poured the contents on my desk. I gently washed the mustard (芥末) off my girl's treasures and spraying (喷洒) them with breath freshener to kill the smell of onions. And then put them into the bag again. The next evening,I returned it to Molly.
After dinner I asked her to tell me about the stuff in the sack. Happy and excited, she placed the objects in a row on the dining room table and explained them to me one by one. I found that each of the objects had a story, a memory or was attached to dreams and friends that meant a lot to Molly. Since I was Molly's beloved father, she was willing to share what she considered important with me.
Later, to my surprise, Molly gave the bag to me once again several days later. Same ratty bag. Same stuff inside. I felt forgiven. And trusted. And loved. And a little more comfortable wearing the title of Father. Over several months, the bag went with me from time to time. And I have kept it with me until today.

While learning the science lessons, I used to get a doubt-why ears, nose, tongue and eyes should be called as special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food. Isn't it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a meal, but the hearing pitch does change after a heavy meal.
We usually give credit of the taste to our tongue, but do you know that unless saliva dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eaten?Taste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds present on the tongue. Try to dry off your tongue and mouth with a tissue paper and then taste something.
Women are much better smellers than men. They are born with this characteristic ability and can correctly pinpoint the exact fragrance of the sample. We all can store almost 50, 000 different scents, which are strongly tied to the memories.
Pupils do not respond to light alone, but to the slightest bit of noise around too. Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a much delicate job do prefer to have a sound-free environment. Even a small noise can dilate their pupils, change the focus and blur their vision. If you do not wear glasses or contact lens due to having a 6/6 vision, you are just among the one third of the human population. It is now statistically proved that only one third of the population has perfect vision, the rest all are either wearing glasses or are trying to read with a compromised vision.
Each and every one of us has a particular or individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us, except for the identical twins. This smell is very subtle yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this scent that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around. Many of us can pinpoint the smell of our significant friends and colleagues. A significant part of this phenomenon is guided by genetics but it is also changed by the environment, diet and personal hygiene. This all together creates the unique chemistry that is individualistic for each person.
    46. What does the example of “heavy meal and hearing” in the first paragraph prove?
    A. Every sensory organs has its specific function.
    B. We easily fall asleep after eating a heavy meal
    C. We feel the world through our eyes, ears, nose and tongue.
    D. All the individual sensory organs are actually connected.
    47. What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean?
    A. Our sense of taste becomes sharper when our tongue is dry.
    B. The chemical dissolved in the saliva helps digest food eaten.
    C. Saliva plays an important role in identifying the taste of food.
    D. The taste buds works better when there is less saliva in the mouth.
    48. Which of the following person prefers a quiet environment?
    A. A craftsman who is working on a diamond. B. An actor who is doing rehearsal.
    C. A pilot who is flying a plane. D. An engineer who is checking machines.
    49. According to the passage, how does a newborn sense his parents are with him?
    A. The identical genes guide him. B. He can recognize their unique smell
    C. He can hear their individual voices. D. The sensor in his brain picks them out.
    50. What is the text mainly about?
    A. The discovery of special senses. B. The functions of sensory organs.
    C. The connectivity of our organs. D. The differences in sense among people.
D 47. C 48. A 49. B 50. B
根据第一段中“Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food. Isn't it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a meal, but the hearing pitch does change after a heavy meal.(看起来这些感觉器官是独立的,但它们确实表现出了某种连通性。有趣的是,当我们吃了丰盛的食物后,我们的听力就不那么敏锐了。饱餐一顿后好好睡一觉不是很好吗?这并不是说我们在饭后就聋了,但在饱餐一顿之后,听觉的音高确实发生了变化)”可推知,第一段中“吃得多听力差”的例子说明了所有单独的感觉器官实际上是相连的。故选D。
    【47题详解】
句意猜测题。根据第二段“We usually give credit of the taste to our tongue, but do you know that unless saliva dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eaten?Taste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds present on the tongue.”
根据倒数第二段中“Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a much delicate job do prefer to have a sound-free environment.(因此,外科医生、制表师和那些从事精细工作的专业人员确实更喜欢一个没有声音的环境)”可知,一个正在钻钻石的工匠更喜欢安静的环境。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Each and every one of us has a particular or individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us, except for the identical twins. This smell is very subtle yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this scent that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around. (我们每一个人都有一种独特的或个性的或特征的气味,这对我们来说是独一无二的,除了同卵双胞胎。这种气味非常微妙,但即使是新生儿也能感觉到。这可能是由于这种气味,新生儿认识到他的父母在周围)”可知,一个新生儿通过辨认父母独特的气味来感觉他的父母和他在一起。故选B。
    【50题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“While learning the science lessons, I used to get a doubt-why ears, nose, tongue and eyes should be called as special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity.(在学习科学课程的时候,我曾经有过一个疑问——为什么耳朵、鼻子、舌头和眼睛应该被称为特殊的感官?基本的原因是这些是我们与周围环境保持联系的渠道。虽然看起来这些感觉器官是独立的,但它们确实表现出了某种连通性)”结合文章主要说明了感官的功能以及感官之间所存在的某种连通性,并通过具体的例子加以了说明。可知,文章主要讲的是感觉器官的功能。故选B。
    D
Parents have problems with their children. Every mother or every father wonders about something like “Why is this so? What can and should I do about it?”Strictly, what are these things that we parents call problems with regard to our children?
To a parent, a problem is some action, habit, or attitude that he doesn't expect, or he doesn't approve of, and that he tries to change but finds that he can't. So,whether it is dawdling (游手好闲) or any other everyday behavior in children, the parent calls it a“problem”. In reality, of course, parents and child specialists don't always agree on what is or isn't a“problem”But this disagreement doesn't make much difference to the anxious parent who feels so sure that he faces a problem.
I think common problems of young children can be grouped into four general categories: habit, management, expectation and adjustment. So, what are they really about? Four common types of problems: 1) Habit or training problems -those that have to do with establishing the fundamental habits of the children. 2) Child management problems -related to managing or controlling the child, directing his self-interest, and trying to get him to live agreeably and socially with other people around him. 3) Expectation problems -those that dealt with the child's learning to fulfill certain expectations. Some of these expectations arise in the parents' view of the child; some arise in the child's own thinking as he looks at the world and his place in it. 4) Adjustment problems—related to the child's sense of security and his emotional adjustment.
Why do these problems arise then? Partly, they arise out of the child's growing up, out of his need to be trained to fit into a world that just wasn't designed especially to meet his wishes. Partly, it is because the parent expects certain things from the child and figures that the child isn't meeting those expectations.
But no matter what causes the problem, it is most probably true that the parent's anxiety and distress are almost sure to increase the problem. For a child is something like a mirror, his behavior reflects the parent's concern about that behavior. That's why it is so important for us to understand why the child behaves as he does. Understanding is the first step in trying to manage a "problem". If you understand, you lose some of your anxiety. If you lose some of your anxiety, the child can relax and improve his behavior.

When something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,"Well,it's so-and-so's fault." or "I know I'm late, but it's not my fault;the car broke down." It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the bad situation.
However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to improve the situation. This is the winner's key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need.
Actually, cases of this kind are common occurrence. If your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don't rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about-creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on "whose fault it is". Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.
    56. How will a person end up if he always blames somebody else for a bad situation?(no more than 10 words)
    57. What is the winner's key to success according to the passage? (no more than 15 words)
    58. What do problems really mean to a winner? (no more than 6 words)
    59. What does the phrase "stepping stones" mean in the passage? (no more than 5 words)
    60. Suppose you have difficulty communicating with your parents, how will you deal with this problem and why? (no more than 25 words).
56. He has no power to change the bad situation.
Or:He can do nothing to(help)change the bad situation.
    57. Winners/They focus on how to improve the situation instead of whom to blame.
    58. Challenges and opportunities for self-development.
Or:Challenges and opportunities to develop themselves/talents.
    59. Means of/Approaches to/Ways to achieve/Ladder to progress(advancement).
    Or:Means/Approaches to achieving success/some goal.
    Or:Means helping people make progress.
    60. (A possible version)
I will talk with them and understand them in their place, and then we'll work out a solution together to improve our relationship.

So, stop focusing on "whose fault it is".”(他们只是更善于将这些问题视为挑战和机遇,以发展自己的才能。 I will talk with them and understand them in their place, and then we'll work out a solution together to improve our relationship.

Dear Chris,
I’m glad to hear from you. Knowing you are interested in the program broadcasting in CCTV 1, I would like to simply introduce it now.
Enjoy the Beautiful Chinese Scenery, which claims to encourage people to know more about traditional China has been successfully held on CCTV and has attracted lots of people who are interested in China. The program introduces the beautiful scenery, geographical culture and customs all over the country. In your letter, you mentioned that you were eager to know more about Chinese culture. I think the best way is to read some relevant books and to use media resources. I’d like to recommend a book called Read Poetry and Learn History which is suitable for the foreigners to know more about Chinese geography, history and culture. The poems of the books can give readers vivid pictures of the life of the ancient Chinese and they can also improve your appreciation of Chinese.
I think the book is a good choice for you. I believe you can improve your understanding about language and culture easily and efficiently In addition, I suggested that you should visit some places of China to feel the Chinese culture personally. As the ancient Chinese saying goes, man who travels far knows more.
I’m looking forward to your coming.
    Yours
    Li Jin
