Mosquitofish may look small, but these invasive fish are a threat. Outside of their range, they defeat other freshwater creatures, like fishes and tadpoles, and feast on their eggs. Since they have few natural predators (捕食者), their population goes unchecked as they cause damage to native wildlife.

Fortunately, scientists have now invented a new tool meant to intimidate mosquitofish: a robotic fish. “Instead of killing them one by one, we’re presenting an approach that can inform better strategies to control them,” said Giovanni Polverino, a biologist at the University of Western Australia. “We made their worst nightmare become real: a robot that scares the mosquitofish but not the other animals around it.”

The robot, which resembles a largemouth bass, one of the mosquitofish’s natural predators, was equipped with a camera to recognize mosquitofish and tadpoles. The researchers set up 12 tanks with six mosquitofish and six tadpoles in each one and allowed the creatures to adapt for a week before meeting the robot. For one hour twice a week for five weeks, each group was placed in a tank with the robot.

In the robotic fish’s presence, the mosquitofish spent more time getting together, and their swimming became more unstable. With the mosquitofish anxious and scared, the tadpoles ventured out more. These effects even lasted for weeks after the final meet with the robot. When the creatures returned to their tanks, the mosquitofish swam at a lower speed and didn’t eat as much, which are signs of anxiety. No change, on the other hand, can be detected on tadpoles.

What’s more, the mosquitofish spent so much energy living in terror that they lost weight. Males’ body shapes also changed to become more streamlined, likely so they can escape more quickly when they’re scared.

Though the study showed promising results, these robots can’t be released into the water yet. The team still needs to understand the long-term impacts on other wildlife and downstream effects on the ecosystem as a whole. But Polverino says they achieved their main goal: to prove fear can affect the survival of mosquitofish.

    4. What does the underlined word “intimidate” mean in paragraph 2?

    APoison. BAttract. CFrighten. DRecognize.

    5. How did the researchers carry out the experiment?

ABy comparing behaviors of two species.

BBy interviewing the inventor of the robot.

CBy collecting data from previous studies.

DBy observing the life cycle of mosquitofish.

    6. What was the change of the mosquitofish?

AThey became stronger. BThey were less active.

CThey started attacking easily. DThey showed little change.

    7. What is Polverino’s attitude towards the robotic fish?

    AApproving. BDisappointed.

    CObjective. DSkeptical.

Many of us listen to music while we work, thinking that it will help us to concentrate on the task at hand. And in fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects on creativity. When it comes to other areas of performance, however, the impact of background music is more complicated.

The idea that listening to music when working is beneficial to output probably has its roots in the so-called “Mozart effect”. Put simply, this is the finding that spatial rotation performance(空间旋转能力) is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart, compared to no sound at all.

How sound affects performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years, and is observed through a phenomenon called the irrelevant sound effect. To study irrelevant sound effect, participants in the research are asked to complete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in the exact order in which they saw them. The tricky thing is being able to do this while ignoring any background noise.

Two key characteristics of the irrelevant sound effect are required for its observation. First, the task must require the person to use their rehearsal abilities(复述能力), and second, the sound must contain acoustical variation(声学变化). Where the sound does not vary much acoustically, the performance of the task is much closer to that observed in quiet conditions.

The irrelevant sound effect itself comes from attempting to process two sources of ordered information at the same time—one from the task and one from the sound. Unfortunately, only the former is required to successfully perform the   recall task, and the effort in ensuring that irrelevant order information from the sound is not processed actually hinders(阻碍) this ability.

A similar conflict is also seen when reading while in the presence of lyrical music. In this situation, the two sources of words—from the task and the sound—are in conflict. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics.

What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or hinders performance depends on the task and on the type of music, and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels.

    12.阅读文章,将文章不全完整,七个选项中有两个是无关选项。

You dream. You make goals. You work hard. You expect results. But usually those expectations are not met.          Here are several things to do when you aren’t hopeful about anything in your life.

A lot of factors (因素) affect your life and you cant control everything. The desire (欲望) to control every situation is only going to exhaust you completely. Worrying about things you can’t control isn’t going to help.

Avoid coming to a conclusion too soon, because most of the time, things aren’t as bad as you thought. We tend to worry unnecessarily.            In hopeless moments, you just need to take a step back and reflect on (思考) your thoughts.

When you’re upset about a particular situation not going your way, take out a pen and paper and list the things you can and can’t control. It can give you the time to rethink and make a correct decision to go further.

Be hopeful and allow yourself to open up to endless possibilities.        . It lifts your life and sets the path to more positivity. When you believe that good things are coming your way, you prepare yourself for it and work accordingly.

    AWrite your thoughts down.

    BHope is an amazing feeling.

    CYou don’t achieve your goals.

    DMake preparations ahead of time.

EYou’d better ask for help when it is necessary.

FDon’t focus too much on controlling everything.

GSo wait before forming an opinion about a particular situation.

    六、读后续写

    39. Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.

“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”

Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.

“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.

“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.

Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!”

Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.

After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.

“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie”.

Staring at the red sign“100%” which was written at his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

    Paragraph 1:

    Slowly, Peter raised his hand.

    Paragraph 2:

Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him.

Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk.
