Many studies have shown the learning-by-teaching effect. Students who spend time teaching what theyve learned show better understanding and ability to remember knowledge than students who simply spend the same time re-studying. But why does teaching help?

Researchers did a study to test their idea that teaching improves the teacher’s learning because it forces the teacher to find back what they’ve learned. They asked 124 students to spend ten minutes studying a text with numbers on a topic which is completely new to them. They told the students they could take notes while studying, but would teach the material afterwards without notes. After studying the text, the students were divided into four groups. In one group the students spent five minutes giving a lesson on the study material without notes. The other groups either spent the same time completing arithmetic (算术) problems, teaching with a script (讲稿) or writing down all they could remember from the text—a form of recalling practice. A week later, all the students took a surprise test of their knowledge and understanding of the text.

The important finding is that the teaching-without-notes group and the recalling-practice group performed better than the group that completed arithmetic problems and the group that taught with a script.

The researchers said the result shows that the benefits of the learning-by-teaching method are caused by recalling practice; that is, the learning-by-teaching method works only when the teaching includes recalling the taught materials.

The new findings have a practical suggestion for how the learning-by-teaching method is used in education. In order to make sure that students learn and remember an educational material, they should internalize (内化) the material before presenting it to others, rather than depend on notes during the presentation process.

A new four-legged whale species was recently discovered by a team of researchers in Egypt. The fossil which was encased in a tomb of rock dates back to over 43 million years ago!

This ancient creature had four functional legs, so it could dwell on both land and in water. Ironically, Egypt’s Fayum Depression, the desert where the fossil was discovered, was an ocean millions of years ago.

Researchers believe this fossil is an example from an era when land animals were adapting to marine life. Modern whales evolved from deer-like land mammals (哺乳动物) over the course of millions of years, and this unique whale could travel across land and swim in the ocean.

The new species is named Phiomicetus Anubis because the whale’s skull (颅骨) resembles the Egyptian jackal-headed god of death, Anubis. Scientists have also been able to recover the whale’s partial skeleton (骨骼). They inferred that the ancient whale was about three meters in length and weighed 1,300 pounds. The mammal had a long mouthful of teeth, which indicated that it fed on smaller mammals and other sea life.

After analyzing the remains at Mansoura University in the Nile River Delta, scientists supposed that P. Anubis is the oldest semi-aquatic whale species found in Africa. Although the fossil itself was discovered thirteen years ago, researchers just completed the analysis and made the exciting announcement of a new species. Other whale fossils with legs have been found before, but the P. Anubis is the earliest, of its kind found in Africa.

5Where did the researchers find the fossil?

AIn the India Ocean. BOn the Rock Islands.

CIn the Fayum Depression. DIn the Nile River Delta.

6What helped scientists figure out Phiomicetus Anubis’s diet?

AIts weight. BIts length. CIts teeth. DIts legs.

7What can we infer from the text?

AThe study of Phiomicetus Anubis is time-consuming.

BThe analysis of Phiomicetus Anubis has a long way to go.

CPhiomicetus Anubis is the oldest mammal found in Africa.

DPhiomicetus Anubis is the world’s largest semi-aquatic whale species.

8Which is the best title of this text?

AA whale that could travel across land

BA new species that was named by Anubis

CAn announcement that made the world excited

DA modern creature that evolved from deer-like land mammals

    Accept Tricky Feelings

Imagine that you only felt so-called positive feelings, like excitement, joy and safety.     9    . Being human means we experience various emotions, even painful or uncomfortable ones. Accepting them is important and can improve your well-being.

    Do you notice uncomfortable feelings?

When you accept that difficult emotions are normal and temporary, you’re often able to cope with them. Psychologists have found that people who allow themselves to feel a range of emotions, including painful ones, are often more at peace than people who try to avoid or push uncomfortable feelings away.    10

Does that mean all behaviour is OK?

If you allow yourself to feel angry, for example, that doesn’t mean you can throw things around or behave unkindly. Anita Garai, a well-being teacher and author of Being With Our Feelings, says that if we allow ourselves to feel painful emotions, including anger, it’s less likely these feelings will boil over and result in unpleasant actions. “    11    ,” she says. “By listening to them, you can learn more about your needs and choose the best way to respond.”

        12    ?

Garai suggeststhe first step is to notice and examine the uncomfortable feeling in your body. “Where in your body can you feel it? Is it still or moving? Can you describe the movement?” she says. It may be that the feeling reminds you of a colour, shape, sound or texture. “By paying attention to the feeling in this way, it’s less likely that you’ll ignore it,” explains Garai.     13    . Many people find it comforting and inspiring to read about characters who accept, manage and overcome tricky emotions.

    AAnother tool is to read

BYou may feel it’s like a wonderland

CIt might sound great but it’s unrealistic

DDo you examine the tricky feelings in your body

EHow can you learn to accept uncomfortable feelings

FUncomfortable feelings actually help to keep us well

GBy noticing tricky feelings and allowing them to exist, you are being kind to yourself

Last week our school carried out a Labor Week activity, aiming to raise the students' awareness of the significance of labor and arouse our passion for labor. The activity lasted for one week. Firstly, our school organized us students to work in the nearby farm. The task involved planting trees, weeding, and watering vegetable. What's more, we were asked to participate in some voluntary work after class, such as helping the elder do the cleaning. Besides, we shared housework with our parents, relieving their burden.

Through this activity, we have not only realized the value of labor but also learned to respect all laborers. Meanwhile, our physical health has been greatly improved.
