In the past few decades, great changes have taken place in the literary world. With the time changing, Chinese university students show a typical characteristic in their after-school reading and this reflects the changes of thoughts and the quality of young people.

The 1960s was the time for admiring heroes. Chinese university students had a thirst for reading heroic stories. Novels like The Song of Youth and How the Steel Was Tempered  became extremely popular among university students. Lei Feng's Diary and Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung were almost a must to read. Everyone had a copy of China Youth, an encouraging and helpful magazine for the young. Harvest and People's Literature were fashionable among them as well.

University students in the 1970s were quite industrious in study. They spent much time in study than in spare-time reading. They wished to enrich their reading so as to improve self-cultivation and expand their knowledge. Masterpieces such as works of Shakespeare were popular, Lu Xun Selected Works and Ba Jin's trilogy were among the favorites of the students.

The 1980s shot up many young lovers for literature. At that time, foreign and Chinese masterpieces, especially works of Hugo and Shelley were the books young people often read. A survey named “The book that impressed you most during 1985 to 1989” indicated that Jin Yong's works ranked the second and works of Qiong Yao and San Mao the sixth.

In addition to romantic fiction and martial arts fiction, a new type of books — science fiction became popular among the male students in the 1990s. Apart from that, contemporary masterpieces including Chinese novels such as White Deer Plain, and foreign masterworks like War and Peace and The Thorn Birds were also popular.

    4. What is mainly described in the second paragraph?

    AReal heroes in the 1960s.

BForeign works in the 20th century.

CThe role models in Chinese college students’ eyes.

DThe popularity of heroic books among Chinese college students.

    5. What does the underlined word “industrious” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    ASmart. BHard-working.

    CCasual. DAbsent-minded.

    6. What can we learn from the text?

AUniversity students in the 1960s read more than those in the 1970s.

BFemale university students liked science fiction most in the 1990s.

CCollege students could choose to read from many books in the 1980s.

DThe Thorn Birds was the most popular novel in the late 20th century.

While dolphin research is till in its infancy(初期), the wealth of information that we may one day obtain from these magnificent creatures is unimaginable. One lesson that we can learn from them today, however, could be a key to the survival of our civilization. In today's dog-eat-dog world, the dolphin community may just offer a few lessons that we should take the time to learn.

There's a saying in our culture that suggests "it takes a village to raise a child". In earlier times, our society often reflected this concept. Today, however, morals and values are almost nonexistent and technology continues to contribute to, the breakdown of our families, communities and our society as a whole. Dolphins, however, are cooperative and playful. Their inner societies or pods exist under extremely dangerous conditions only because of the closeness and support the members offer to one another. In the world of the dolphin, members care for and protect each other. Dolphins are creatures of socialization just as we are.

As human beings, maybe its time that we take a look back at how we have evolved and consider instead returning to the way of the dolphin. Rather than spreading farther and farther from each other, the answer to our problems is perhaps instead, to come closer. The pod concept that protects dolphins could very well be the ideal that could protect our families and our communities.

There is, in fact, a society that is seriously contemplating the concept of pod living. The Sirius Institute, http:/www. planetpuna. com, in Hawaii has actually developed a model human society based on pod living. According to their website, Sirius believes that the pod model, can help us" restore(恢复)our currently fragmented(碎片化的)society. "The model provides an environment where" humans can belong to something bigger than themselves and be accepted for who they are and the contributions they make."

    8. How does the author feel about the world today?

    AHighly competitive. BVery cooperative.

    CMuch civilized. DEnvironmentally friendly.

    9. What is it that causes our society to be less united than before?

ACompetition. BLack of belief. CTechnology. DEconomy crisis.

    10. What does the underlined word "contemplating" in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?

ALooking at something for a long time. BThinking carefully for a long time.

CThinking highly of. DPaying attention to.

    11. What would be the best title of the text?

AHow to Survive in Society. BThe Concept of Pod Living.

CWhat contributes to Modem Society. DLearn from Dolphins.

    二、七选五阅读

Birth order plays a vital role in deciding the characteristics of a child. And when it comes to the middle child, it certainly plays a huge role. The middle children go through some things only they can understand.     12

Mostly, middle children have to share a room.    13    They need to share a room with an elder one because they're too young to sleep alone. And just when they think they'll finally have a room of their own, a voice is heard saying, “Dear, please share the room with your younger one, as he's too small to sleep alone.”

Middle children tend to share clothes with their siblings (兄弟姐妹). Their cupboard is full of handmedowns from their older sibling, and they need to wear his clothes.    14    They can always show off their elder sibling's clothes and things at school. Also, they get to pass their own clothes to their younger sibling.

15     They're liked by both, because they can relate well to both generations. On one hand they can recall how much fun it was watching Garfield and Friends, and on the other hand they can talk about the latest video game released in the market.

Siblings' talking is one interesting thing about a middle child. They are not as boring as they appear.    16     Also, thanks to the divided attention at home, middle children are independent and need not rely on anyone.

AInstead, they are very artistic and creative.

BBut this comes with its own advantage too.

CHere are some things a middle child can relate to.

DThey rarely enjoy the experience of having their own room.

E.And the dream of having their own room is completely destroyed.

F.They're the problem solvers between their older and younger siblings.

G.As a middle kid, they are the bridge between their younger and older siblings.

    三、完形填空

As her father guided her     17     down the road alongside the swimming pool, 12-year-old Tina Fisher fiddled (整理、摆弄) with the folds of the borrowed wet suit she was wearing and took a few     18     breaths.

This is a girl who loves the     19     of water flowing around her limbs (四肢), who until recently was     20     her underwater swimming, and who takes every opportunity to spend time in the water.

But this was the first time Tina had been anywhere near a pool since the otherwise     21     June 2 when she was playing with a friend. Just 90 minutes after the preteen felt pain in her legs — the first symptom of a spinal stroke — she became paralyzed (瘫痪) from the waist     22     .

Now she was going to try something she’d never     23     even when she’d had the use of her legs: She was going to take her first scuba diving lesson.

Tina’s father, Dennis Fisher, slipped into the pool and helped Occupational Therapist Kaitlin Macdonald     24     his daughter into the water. She lay     25     , rested her head on the surface and, for a few brief moments,     26     her eyes. Then she did something that made MacDonald smile. “Tina,” she said, “look at your leg.” Ever so slightly, Tina was moving her right leg. It was     27     a few inches, but still — Tina’s mind was telling her leg what to do, and her leg was     28     .

“A lot of times, we’ll see movement     29     in the water,” MacDonald said, “It means a capacity (能力) is there that we can build on,     30     it’s still weak.”

For Tina, it felt great to just be back in the pool. She wrapped her arms around her father and briefly lay her head on his chest. Then she turned to Macdonald and indicated she was ready to swim the     31     of the pool.

“OK,” Macdonald said, “Here we go.”

    Miraculous (神奇的) Strength

One chilly, December evening, I was preparing dinner. Suddenly, while setting the table, I heard a tremendous crash from the second floor. It was the kind of rare, heart-stopping noise that instantly struck fear into a mother’s heart. Even the dishes in. the kitchen cupboard rattled (发出咔嗒声)!My seven-year-old son began screaming for help, and I raced up the stairs without even stopping to put down the dinner fork I held in my hand.

Entering my sons room, I found my frightened toddler (学步的儿童)trapped under a five-drawer wooden dresser (衣橱). It had been torn from its wall anchor. I could hear crying as I ran toward him. As I leaned over, I saw his small, bloody face and the terror in his eyes.

I pulled the large dresser off him. At that moment, I felt I could move mountains. I was fearful to look but quickly tried to assess how badly he was hurt. Begging him to stay still, I dialed 911 and began to pray. I prayed for the mercy that spared him and the healing he would need, given that I wasn’t sure of the extent of his injuries. In those minutes before the ambulance arrived, although I was in a chaotic situation with both my sons in tears, an inner calm kept me focused and controlled. I felt a strong presence keeping me steady.

After the ambulance workers conducted a brief assessment, it was agreed that he should have a more extensive examination since this was a possible chest or head injury. A moment of pause forced me to process what had just happened. I recalled dashing up the stairs with a sense of fear as t0 what 1 would find. In only a few seconds, a lifetime of tender memories replayed in my mind. I had asked myself, “Is he still breathing?” “Are bones broken?” One moment. I was simply preparing dinner; the next. I was tearfully praying for my son’s life.
