    Letting her take the wheel
My daughter, Mia, is 16 and learning t drive. Many parents are freaked ut (惊慌失措) abut putting their easily distracted teenagers in charge f a fastmving thing f glass and steel. My wife refused t teach her, leaving the task t me.
I've learned a few things. First, Mia didn't knw hw t drive at all. She didn't even knw where t put the key. It was like watching a chimpanzee try t slve a puzzle. Wrse, she culdn't remember that D was fr drive, and R meant reverse (倒车).
Then came the rad rules. Mia likes t sail past stp signs. I had t explain that “STOP means STOP”. Had she actually read the rule bk? “Yes,” she said, but she frgt mst f it. “It was s bring.”
Althugh I had been driving her arund fr her whle life, she hadn't learned anything.
Despite these things, I've als learned that I enjy teaching her. I think I'm pretty gd at it. I am much calmer than I thught I wuld be.
I als enjy the nenne time we have tgether. We have sme gd cnversatins. S far, we have cvered her friends' hairstyles and hw stressed she feels after schl. I enjyed cmmunicating with her.
One Sunday evening, we were driving dwn a narrw back street, deep in cnversatin, when I realized that the car was mving quite fast. “SLOW DOWN!” I yelled, yanking (猛拉) the hand brake (手刹). We stpped the car and sat in the dark fr a minute. “Yu can't g that fast,” I said. “Yu dn't knw enugh yet.” I put my hand n her head, “I dn't want anything t happen t yu.”
    “Me neither.” she said.
    “Okay, cl,” I said. “Let's g.”
She started the car and we headed back hme.

Peple have different ways f dealing with a cmmn cld. Sme take ver the cunter medicines such as aspirin while thers try ppular hme remedies (治疗) like herbal tea r chicken sup. Yet here is the tugh truth abut the cmmn cld: nthing really cures it.
S why d peple smetimes believe that their remedies wrk? Accrding t James Taylr, prfessr at the University f Washingtn, clds usually g away n their wn in abut a week, imprving a little each day after symptms peak, s it's easy t believe it's medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USATday reprted.
It still seems hard t believe that we can deal with mre serius diseases yet are pwerless against smething s cmmn as a cld. Recently, scientists came clser t figure ut why. T understand it, yu first need t knw hw antiviral drugs wrk. They attack the virus by attaching t and changing the surface structures f the virus. T d that, the drug must fit and lck int the virus like the right piece f a jigsaw (拼图), which means scientists have t identify the virus and build a 3D mdel t study its surface befre they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enugh.
The tw cld viruses that scientists had lng knwn abut were rhinvirus (鼻病毒) A and B.But they didn't find ut abut the existence f a third virus, rhinvirus C, until 2006. All three f them cntribute t the cmmn cld, but drugs that wrk well against rhinvirus A and B have little effect when used against rhinvirus C.
“This explains mst f the previus failures f drug trials against rhinviruses,” study leader Prfessr Ann C.Palmenberg at the University f Wiscns in Madisn, US, tld ScienceDaily.
Nw, mre than 10 years after the discvery f rhinvirus C, scientists have finally built a highly detailed 3D mdel f the virus, shwing that the surface f the virus is, as expected, different frm that f ther cld viruses.
With the mdel in hand, hpefully a real cure fr a cmmn cld is n its way. Sn, we may n lnger have t waste ur mney n medicines that dn't really wrk.
28.What des the authr think f ppular remedies fr a cmmn cld?
A.They are quite effective. B.They are slightly helpful.
C.They actually have n effect. D.They still need t be imprved.
    29.Hw d antiviral drugs wrk?
A.By breaking up cld viruses directly.
B.By changing the surface structures f the cld viruses.
C.By preventing clds frm develping int serius diseases.
D.By absrbing different kinds f cld viruses at the same time.
30.What can we infer frm the passage?
A.The surface f cld viruses lks quite similar.
B.Scientists have already fund a cure fr the cmmn cld.
C.Scientists were nt aware f the existence f rhinvirus C until recently.
D.Knwing the structure f cld viruses is the key t develping an effective cure.
31.What is the best title fr this passage?
A.Drugs against cld viruses B.Helpful hme remedies
C.N current cure fr cmmn cld D.Research n cld viruses
    D
It happens cuntless times a day. A flwer's bright clr and the smell f sweet nectar (花蜜) attract a bee. The bee stps by fr a quick taste and small grains f pllen (the pwder prduced by a flwer) stick t its bdy. The bee then travels t anther flwer f the same type and leaves the pllen as it has anther meal. This is an example f animal pllinatin (授粉)—a prcess extremely imprtant t plant reprductin.
It's nt nly plants that depend n animal pllinatin—humans d, t. Wrldwide, nearly a thusand plants that we grw fr fd, spices, clthing fibers, and medicine depend n it. If pllinatin suddenly stpped, we wuld have n apples, tmates, cffee, and many ther gds.
This imprtant prcess is carried ut by mre than 200,000 different animal species knwn as pllinatrs. Flies and beetles—the riginal pllinatrs—date back 130 millin years t the first flwering plants. Birds, butterflies, and ants als d their part. Even nnflying mammals help ut: mnkeys tear pen flwers with their hands, accidentally spreading pllen int the air and nt their fur.
Pllinatrs are therefre imprtant, but they are als at risk. Climate change, habitat lss, and invasive predatrs (入侵捕食者) all threaten them. The United States, fr example, has lst ver 50 percent f its hneybees ver the past ten years. A serius threat facing bees is clny cllapse disrder, when wrker bees mysteriusly disappear frm their clny. Scientists are still trying t identify its cause.
There is a qute attributed t Einstein that if bees ever disappeared, man wuld nly have fur years left t live. Whether that's true r nt des nt really matter, says wildlife phtgrapher Luie Schwartzberg: the key pint is that there is a__real__danger. “The healthiest fd we need t eat,” he says, “wuld disappear
withut pllinating plants. It's pretty serius.”
32.What might be left n flwer B, as is shwn in the picture?
    A.Nectar. B.Pllen.
    C.Leaves D.Fur.
33.What can be inferred frm the text?
A.Pllinatin means a lt t fruits and grains.
    B.Nearly a thusand plants depend n pllinatin.
C.Mnkeys are the nly nnflying mammal pllinatrs.
D.There are mre than 20,000 different species f pllinatrs.
34.What threat are hneybees faced with?
    A.Climate change. B.Habitat lss.
    C.Invasive predatrs. D.Clny cllapse disrder.
35.What des the underlined “a real danger” in the last Paragraph refer t?
A.Bees are disappearing. B.Humans can nly survive 4 years.
C.Fd shrtage is serius. D.N pllinating plants, n healthy fd.
