Haad Farang (Haad Sai Yao), Koh Muck

This small but striking bay in Thailand has waters free from riptides (激流), making it safe for families to play water in the sun. As its nick name impliesfarang is Thai for foreigners--you will find a large concentration of backpackers here. Still, with only a couple of simple food shops, its a far cry from the noises of Chaweng beach on Koh Samui or Kamala on Phuket, which makes it to be one of the top tourist destinations.

Rent a sea kayak (皮划艇) (100 baht, which is around2 an hour) and go around the corner to Tham Morakot (the Emerald Cave), a winding cave that opens up to a bay walled by thick leaves and often visited by groups of monkeys. It is very inspiring, but to fully appreciate it, be sure to prepare it, be sure to prepare a light to avoid knocking into cave walls and other kayaks. To avoid being crowded, make the trip in the late afternoon.

    Where to eat

The Ko Yao Viewpoint Restaurant is the best place for tourists. Drink the sweet cocktails in favour of an icy Chang beer and enjoy the last rays of the bay.

    Where to stay

Cheaper hotels of comparable quality are set slightly back in the forest, but if you want beachfront access its worth choosing one of the basic hotels at Koh Mook Charlie Beach Resort (bungalows from32).

    Getting there

Fly from Bangkok to Trang with AirAsia (from30), then take a one-hour Tigerline ship from Hat Yao Pier (19). Besides, a five-hour ship from Phuket at Rassada Pier (41) goes directly to the island and will drop passengers at Haad Farang.

    C. Its simple food shops.             D. Its quiet environment.

    2. What can we know about the Tham Morakot?

    D. There are fewer people in the late afternoon.

    3. Where is the text most probably taken from?

    A. Travel magazines.      B. Newspapers.

    C. The Internet.       D. Travel agency notes.

    B

My family and I never talked about school as the ticket to a future. I was in the classrooms, but I wasn’t there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was 13 years old, but I already hated being who I was.

I had an English teacher, Mr. Creech, who knew I couldn’t read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined it wouldn’t happen again. Later that day, Mr. Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.

Now I was 41 years old. One day, I planned to fly back to Texas to visit my friends and family. On my way from the airport, I saw Mr. Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him. “Do I know you?” he asked. “Yes, sir, you do know me,” I answered excitedly. “My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.” The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he’d once encouraged.

“I’m so glad I had a chance to see you,” I said. “And Mr. Creech, I have great news to share.” I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn’t all. I had become a published author and an active speaker. “The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well,” I added.

The experts say what once worried me has a name: dyslexia (诵读困难症). But I can tell you it was a lack of desire for education.

    1. Why did the author want to hide?

    A. Because he felt sorry for himself.        B. Because he hated being laughed at.

    C. Because he couldn’t read at all.         D. Because he didn’t have a ticket.

    5. Which of the following could best describe Mr. Creech?

    A. Considerate and dutiful.             B. Demanding and enthusiastic.

    C. Emotional and dedicated.            D. Friendly and ambitious.

    6. Why couldn’t the author read before meeting Mr. Creech?

    A. Because his reading age was not long enough.

    B. Because his parents didn’t teach him how to read.

    C. Because he was afraid of reading before the class.

    D. Because he didn’t have inner driving force to learn to read.

    7. What can we infer from the passage?

    A. Mr. Creech taught two students called Anthony Hamilton.

    B. The author had become a published author and an active speaker.

    C. Dyslexia was the underlying reason that made the author unable to read.

    D. The author was grateful to Mr. Creech.

    C

If a family member blames you for something you have done, it is important to be careful about how you defend yourself. It is not a good idea to use ways that cause hurt, even if they would help you make a valid point. If you can think of an instance where the other person has done exactly what they accuse you of, for example, it would not be good manners to throw it in their face. You should only bring it up if you don’t have a choice. Then, you should make sure that you do it respectfully.

Even if a family member intentionally goes against reasonable wishes you may have, you should understand that people see even the most fundamental things in very different ways. Remember that people are different. If you consider any noise after midnight to be intolerable, for example, others may see it is completely acceptable. It can take them a great deal of time to change their behavior for a demand that they do not understand.

Think about the family conflicts that you are worried about now. Check to see if your parents had similar problems. People who grow up with parents who fight unfairly often repeat the same behavior. Consider changing the unfair habits that you grew up with.

Understand that memories tend to change. In long-standing family disputes, all parties involved tend to have completely different recollections of the original problem.

Families are a curious concept — while family members often feel nothing but annoyed for one another, they will also often be there for them if they should ever be in serious trouble. When you feel resentment for someone, think about how far you would go for them if they happened to be in trouble. It could help soften you. Think about how you care for the other person.

    8. Which of the following does the author agree with according to the first paragraph?

    A. To fight back to defend yourself.           B. To target the problem, not the person.

    C. To deal with a man as he deals with you.    D. To hurt each other when angry.

    9. What does the underlined word “resentment” in the last paragraph mean?

    A. Curiosity. B. Kindness.          C. Concern.        D. Anger.

    10. Which of the following statements may the author approve of?

    A. Family members share the same memories over family disputes.

    B. Parents should set a good example in a family.

    C. It’s easy for people to agree on different ideas.

    D. You can defend yourself by throwing facts back.

    11. What is the best title of the passage ?

    A. Think about how you care for other persons.

    B. Learn to concern about family members.

    C. How to deal with family conflicts wisely.

    D. Learn to accept each other in a family.

    D

A robot created by Washington State University (WSU) scientists could help elderly people with dementia and other limitations live independently in their own homes.

The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors (传感器) equipped in a WSU smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities. It navigates (定位) through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own, provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owners to objects like their medication or a snack in the kitchen.

“RAS combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection technology of a WSU smart home to provide assistance in the moment, as the need for help is detected,” said Bryan Minor, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Currently, about 50 per cent adults over the age of 85 need assistance with everyday activities such as preparing meals and taking medication and the annual cost for this assistance in the US is nearly $2 trillion. With the number of adults over 85 expected to triple by 2050, researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the WSU smart home will relieve some of the financial pressure on the healthcare system by making it easier for older adults to live alone.

RAS is the first robot researchers have tried to apply to their smart home environment. They recently published a study in the journal Cognitive Systems Research that shows how RAS could make life easier for older adults struggling to live independently.

“While we are still in an early stage of development, our initial results with RAS have been promising,” Minor said. “The next step in the research will be to test RAS’ performance with a group of older adults to get a better idea of what video reminders and other preferences they have regarding the robot.”

    1. What plays a key role in RAS serving the elderly?

    A. Sensors.       B. Videos.  C. Signal lights.  D. Mobile robots.

    13. What can we learn about RAS?

    A. It is the first robot used in daily life.      B. Its function remains to be tested.

    C. It can locate people and do any task.      D. It can cook for owners on its own.

    14. What’s Minor’s attitude toward the future of RAS?

    A. Doubtful.       B. Negative.      C. Optimistic.       D. Uncertain.

    1. What would be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Elderly People Leave the Nursing Home.

    B. Smart Home Tests First Elder Care Robot.

    C. RAS, the First Robot to Make Home Smart.

    D. Older Adults Have Benefited from RAS a Lot.

I know a lot of people that once lived abroad and none of them regrets the time they spent abroad. Yes, there will be difficult times. When you don’t understand the people around you, everything is foreign and nothing makes sense. Everyday tasks seem like a major problem.   19

Become independent. Living in a foreign country all by yourself will surely make you independent. You are forced to make decisions by yourself as you don’t have other choices.  20 Show them that they were all so wrong about your being a mama’s boy (or girl)! It will feel great!

The Robson Valley, where I live in the Canadian Rockies, has wonderful scenery of snow-covered mountains, ranches (牧场) and farms, which attracts hikers, snowmobilers and horseback riders. The valley is remote. In winter, temperature falls below freezing and more than 30 feet of snow falls on the highest mountains

Last December, I got a call from my best friend, Monika Brown. “Two horses are trapped on Mount Renshaw,” He told me. “Some snowmobilers spotted them high on the mountain. They're trapped in the snow and starving. Someone needs to get those horses down the mountain, or they'll die off there.

I've loved horses since I was a girl. The thought that two horses would freeze to death on a mountain was too much to bear. I jumped up. “We must get there. They need someone who knows horses to look after them and feed them. I'll get in touch with my friends Sara and Matt. They’re amazing snowmobilers.

Matt agreed right away to go up the mountain. After finding them, I covered the two horses with blankets and fed them with some hay personally. I was overjoyed. But then we faced an even bigger challenge. The horses were miles from the nearest road. We had to get the two horses out of the dangerous area before another snowstorm arrived.

Sara and Matt put forward a plan to dig a trench () from the horse site to the nearest road, where we could walk them down the mountain. But just a handful of people waited on the scene. We spent the rest of the day digging and made a trench a few dozen meters long. At this rate it would take weeks to reach the road, about a kilometer away. A storm could blow up anytime. We needed more diggers. I sent out e-mails and made more phone calls to ask everyone I could think of for help.

The very next day something amazing happened.

    读后续写

The very next day something amazing happened. Just when I wondered when the clear weather would come, help arrived. People from every part of the Robson Valley gradually turned up to dig. Snowmobilers, ranchers, farmers, everyone took shovel, boarded a snowmobile and headed up the mountain. The temperature dropped to 40 degrees blow zero but still people came. At last, the trench was completed. We walked the two horses to the nearest road, then to the stable.

I put my hands on the horses necks, saying, They saved you. And then I realized they had saved us too. What moved me was that on the last day of digging, when it seemed like the entire Robson Valley was on the horses side, people Id never met before dug snow out to keep the rescue efforts going. A community of individuals came together as one. It was the best gift our beautiful, remote valley could ask for.
