    In January 2012, tw seventeen-year-ld Canadian students, Mathew H and Asad Muhammad, put a LEGO man in the Earth's upper atmsphere (高层大气).

    The first lighthuses (灯塔) in America, which were built in the 1710s, used wd r cal as fuel. By the mid-1700s, American lighthuses began t use il-burning lamps (灯). The lamps were lit and then placed in a high place s they culd be seen frm great distances.
    The truble with using il lamps was that nly a small percentage f the light prduced by the lamp culd be seen frm the sea. Increasing the amunt f light meant burning mre fuel, which required bringing mre il t the lighthuse. This was a difficult jb fr the lighthuse keeper.
    Many inventrs tried different ways t increase the brightness f the light frm il lamps. By the early 1800s, American lighthuses used Argand lamps. Air cming frm the base f this lamp made the light brighter. With the additin f a reflectr, the Argand lamp became standard in American lighthuses until the 1850s. Ships fifteen miles away culd see the light n a clear night.
    In 1819, the French gvernment asked scientist Augustin-Jean Fresnel t wrk n directing mre light tward ships. Fresnel, wh studied prisms (棱镜), began wrking n a special lens (透镜) that used many prisms. Fresnel was able t send 80 percent f the light, s ships culd see the light frm twenty miles away! The new lens was named the Fresnel lens. America began t use the new lens in the 1850s.
