Red squirrels eat a lt f maple syrup (槭糖浆). In fact, ne ld Native American stry says peple learned hw t make syrup by watching squirrels.
Red squirrels are ne f the few creatures besides humans t make maple syrup. Fr humans, the sweet-tasting liquid is a treat and shuld be eaten in small amunts, fr health reasns. But fr red squirrels, maple syrup appears t be part f a survival plan. Red squirrels d nt spend the winter sleeping. Instead, they live n nuts they stred in the fall. By late winter, the stred-up fd is almst gne, and spring has nt arrived with its grwth f new fds. That’s when the sap (树液) begins t run, giving squirrels needed energy.
Dr. Heinrich spent a whle winter bserving hw the Nrth American red squirrel makes, and then enjys maple syrup. In a scientific paper, Dr. Heinrich described the actins f the squirrels when the sap starts t flw. First, using their tw big frnt teeth, they bite int the branches f lder trees, making tw hles. Then they d their business fr the rest f the day. This gives the watery sap time t drp ut and spread acrss the uter cvering f a tree. As the day passes, the water in the sap evaprates (蒸发), leaving behind sweet maple syrup. Early the next mrning, the squirrels return fr their reward. They eat up all the sugar. Finally, befre leaving, they tap new hles fr the next day.
This is similar t the way early Native Americans first made syrup! But large amunts f sap can take days t evaprate. This is nt practical if yu want t make a lt f syrup, s the Native Americans came up with a better way. Instead f waiting fr the water t evaprate, they biled the sap in wden pts (锅). After several hurs, the water wuld ck ff, leaving behind maple syrup. Then they used the syrup t sweeten everything frm crn t water.
S had it nt been fr the busy red squirrel and the careful bservatins f Native Americans, this sweet taste might still be untapped.
