I used t cllect $2 bills. They were rare, and I thught that meant they were lucky, but rare and lucky are nt the same thing.
In the spring f 2014, I began suffering frm severe pain and tiredness, which I riginally chalked up t verwrk. I had an examinatin. A few days later, I was tld that I had stmach cancer. The chance f getting this disease was apprximately 0.9 percent.
I immediately wanted t knw my dds (几率) f survival. My dctr refused t predict my future and tld me t ignre my survival dds, which were a lw 9 percent. He pinted ut an errr that peple make when lking at statistics. If yu survive, he reminded me, yu'll survive 100 percent. N ne survives 9 percent.
After I finished my treatments, mnths passed and my cancer did nt return. Accrding t my dctrs, the lnger I went withut a recurrence (复发), the less likely I was t have ne. That meant my dds f survival actually increased ver time. By Nvember 2015, I had gne 19 mnths with n evidence f the disease, and based n the calculatins f a physicist friend f mine, my dds f survival were 70 percent. The chances were high — very high — that I wuld beat my cancer fr gd.
Arund Christmas f that year, hwever, I began t have truble eating. One night, shrtly after a small meal, I started t feel the sensatin f being repeatedly stabbed in the belly with a knife. I went t the emergency rm. My cancer had returned.
Lking back, I'd used survival rates t measure the amunt f hpe I culd give rpe t. Hwever, cancer des nt respect the ratinal nature f numbers. It perates within its wn cruel lgic.
My 10-year-ld niece recently saw ne f the $2 bills that I carry in my wallet. She'd never seen ne befre, and asked me if she culd have it. I hesitated, wndering if I was ging t have t either dispense with (摒弃) sme gd luck, r saddle (使肩负重担) her with the ppsite. But the hesitatin passed, and I handed her the nte.

We all want t believe that laughter is gd fr what makes us ill, but the science backing that up is thin. Mst studies have been small and have relied n self-reprted assessments.
Hwever, a few studies relying n lab testing d shw sme benefits. “A big laugh leads t the release (释放) f endrphins (chemicals that can make yu feel happier) frm the brain,” says Michael Miller frm the University f Maryland Medical Center.
A 2005 study by Miller measured the bld flw f 20 vlunteers befre and after watching a funny mvie and a sad mvie. After the sad mvie, bld flw was mre restricted in 14 f the 20 viewers. But after the mvie that made them laugh, average bld flw increased by 22 percent.
Financial backing fr laughter and humr research is weak — s weak that when Mary Bennett, directr f the Western Kentucky University Schl f Nursing, wanted t lk int the effect f laughter n the immune (免疫) system, she fund herself asking ther researchers fr equipment frm their labs. “It's really hard t get taken seriusly when yu say yu study laughter,” she says.
But her study f 33 healthy wmen, published in 2003, shwed that thse wh laughed at a humrus mvie had higher levels f natural killer cell activity, which increased their ability t fight ff disease. Hwever, the effect was seen nly in the subjects wh laughed ut lud, nt in thse wh quietly watched the cmedy.
But mst f the research n laughter and health depends n persnal feelings r pinins rather than scientific facts. One study f 70 depressed elderly wmen fund that laughter yga was just as effective as exercise in imprving md, as measured by self-satisfactin reprts by subjects.
When Bennett is asked whether laughter cures r prevents any disease, her quick answer is a simple “N.” Still, she adds, “I think it's a useful add-n t real medicine. If yu're receiving medicinal treatment, anything yu can d t help yu stay healthy thrugh smething unpleasant will help.”
    28. What des the 2005 study shw?
    A. Funny mvies may cause bld prblems.
    B. Endrphins may make peple happier.
    C. Sad mvies are harmful t patients.
    D. Laughter may benefit health.
    29. What is a difficult prblem fr Bennett?

    A. It resulted in Trump's new plicy.
    B. It frced sme great players t retire.
    C. It was partly due t cncerns ver player safety.
