Are you a social media addict? Are you always checking your smart phone to see how many “likes” you’ve received for your latest post? Maybe you feel comforted by the sound that someone has sent you a message?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. We check our phones an average of 150 times a day, and around 30% of the total time spent online is devoted to social media. Some experts now fear this habit could be damaging our mental health.
This is something particularly bothering young adults, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh. It found the more they used social media, the more likely they were to be depressed. In tests, those people who checked social media frequently were 2.7 times more likely to be depressed compared to those who spent most of their time generally surfing the Internet, who had just 1.7 times the risk.
Some of us certainly feel sad when we’re ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us. But depression is a more serious condition and clinical psychologist, Abigael San, recently told the BBC that, “It’s a real issue, and it’s been getting significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked that it takes you away from your real relationships.” However, Abigael does admit that social media is more likely to worsen pre-existing issues than directly cause them.
Other research by the University of Glasgow found that teenagers are affected by the 24-hour demands of their social media accounts. It found that those with higher levels of emotional investment in social media, and who use it at night, were more likely to feel depressed and anxious.
Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we don’t want to miss out on a conversation that’s taking place online. But we need to know when to switch off our virtual online world and connect with the real world instead.
24.Who is more likely to be depressed according to the study?
A.People checking social media frequently.
B.People surfing the Internet regularly.
C.People receiving a few “likes” for their posts.
D.People longing for more messages.
25.Why does the author give a quote from Abigael San in Para. 4?
A.To introduce the coming topic.
B.To give a more supporting example.
C.To stress the importance of social media.
D.To explain the cause of a social media addict.
26.Why do people get addicted to social media according to the author?
A.Because they have more time and money.
B.Because the virtual world is much more attractive.
C.Because they want to attract more attention.
D.Because emotional investment in social media benefits them.
27.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.It’s common for teenagers to be a social addict.
B.Using smart phones does harm to people’s health.
C.It’s better to stay away from virtual online world.
D.Social media addiction contributes to depression.

When Jane Goodall was 6, during World War II, she was often woken by alarms (警报). The sound warned that enemy planes were flying over her town. Her little sister would run to the bomb shelter. But Goodall refused to move, “I did not want to leave my bed, ” she said. “They had to take me down with all my bedclothes from my bed. ”
That same stubbornness (固执) led her to become the world’s best-known biologist. In 1960, she stayed for months in the forests of Tanzania in Africa, waiting for chimpanzees (黑猩猩) to accept her. When they did, Goodall was able to observe them up close and discover that they could use tools. In 1962, university professors criticized (指责) Goodall for using human names and emotions to describe chimps. “I was not against them, ” she says. “I just quietly went on doing what I knew was right. ” She believes that chimps are smart social animals, which is now widely accepted.
In 1986, Goodall went to a meeting on habitat loss that changed her ideas about nature. She not only just did research, but also began a schedule of travel and charity work. After 35 years, she’s still on the job. Goodall shares her life story to get people aware of environmental protection.
Before the COVID-19, Goodall traveled 300 days a year. She spoke at school gatherings and talk shows. Since March 2020, Goodall has suspended her travels. However, she has taken hotels and lecture halls as her bedroom for the past year and a half. Her determination to spread her message keeps her there for hours each day. Goodall does, on average, three virtual lectures or interviews between breakfast and bedtime. Her stories leave audiences feeling hopeful about our planet.
28.What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 1?

Parents across Europe and elsewhere have to look for creative ways to get their kids to eat fruits, vegetables and berries because they don’t eat enough greens, which is also a concern for many countries. As the health and nutrition benefits of these foods are well-known, increasing the consumption of them among children is a challenge. According to a new study, however, one effective way to get kids to eat more fruits and vegetables is to see Mom and Dad eat a lot of those foods themselves.
Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland asked the parents of 114 kindergarten-aged children to answer a survey about their kids’ consumption of vegetables, fruits, and berries, as well as their family’s home food environment. The study found that the example of a mother is associated with a child’s consumption of raw and cooked vegetables and fruits and berries, while the example of a father is stronger for the consumption of cooked vegetables.
What’s more, the researchers found that dinner is the most important meal when it comes to teaching children to eat vegetables since dinners are opportunities to serve vegetables in different forms, whether it’s the main course, a side dish, or a salad. The families participating in the study often ate dinner together, stressing the role of parental influence on the development of children’s dietary choices and preferences. When it comes to eating fruits, evening snacks were the most important meal. Noticeably, many families still eat fewer vegetables, fruits and berries that would be beneficial. Cooked vegetables and berries were the least eaten among the study population.
It’s worth mentioning that, the researchers have done another relevant study. In that study, they noted educating children on food knowledge in kindergartens can promote good nutrition among them and the establishment of healthy dietary habits, which often stick with people all the way to adulthood.
32.What makes many countries worried?
A.The public’s ignorance of nutrition. B.Greens’ inaccessibility to kids.
C.Kids’ inadequate intake of greens. D.Parents’ unhealthy eating habits.
33.What does the new study find?
A.Fathers have a wider influence on children.
B.Cooked vegetables are preferred to the raw.
C.Many families eat enough vegetables and fruits.
D.Dinner is closely related to vegetable consumption.
34.What will the following paragraph probably focus on?
A.Dietary habits of adults. B.Ways to promote good nutrition.
C.Early-childhood food education. D.Necessity of educating children on food.
35.What’s the text mainly about?
A.Importance of food nutrition. B.Function of family meals for kids.
C.Researchers’ study of food varieties. D.Parental influence on kids’ eating greens.

To me, the world's greatest satisfaction is reaching down and lifting someone up. I believe in helping others in times of need. If we all help others, we can make a great impact in society. By joining hands, we can reunite the world.
You never know how big an impact you are making in someone's life. At 1 am, on Saturday, August 25, 2017,Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston, Texas. Before this, my family was preparing for flooding, packing food, first aid kits, and planning for the worst. While taking our cats and rabbits upstairs, my friend Tom called and explained their dilemma(窘境). Their area was issued a mandatory evacuation ( 强制疏散) and they had to leave.
With no place to stay, they were on the way to our house. All seven of them, 5 kids, including a newborn came in. Together we prepared their rooms and let them settle in.
After dinner, we turned on the news and saw Harvey coming in. That night none of us could sleep, listening to the wind blowing and rain thundering down. The four year -old told me, carrying the cat,“Saira, the kitty is scared. Can you make the rain stop, please?” With a forced smile, I helped her to bed and let the cat sleep with her. When we stepped out the next morning, we saw the nearby lake completely full of water, which was an amazing yet scary sight. Tom went a lttle further down and came back wet and explained that there was no way they could return home. They ended up staying that day and planned on leaving the next morning.
The next morning, the news reported how jammed (堵塞的) and flooded the roads were in his community. With tears and worried faces, they stayed for a week. Even my cat seemed to understand the terrible situation. Finally , when the roads were cleared, we all went to send them back. On the way, I saw the damage that the hurricane did.
