Did you catch the CBS special on longevity (长寿) late last year? The story centered on a town in Sardinia, Italy that is celebrating its centenarians
“Old age is common and celebrated in this town, where murals (pictures on the wall) show people who’ve reached at least 100,” says CBS News reporter, Seth Doane.
The town of Villagrande, with its beaches and beauty, is a popular attraction for tourists. But, says Doane, it also draws scientists and researchers, including Valter Longo who directs the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California.
Longo points to the percentage of those reaching 100 in the villages of Sardinia as being “very rare anywhere in the world.” Villagrande is just one centenarian-rich town in Sardinia. Italy has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, but Sardinia beats their record. Consider that there are 33.6 people 100 or older for every 100,000 Sardinian people.
Scientists note that genetics (遗传学) undoubtedly plays a role in the long lives of these islanders. No one is in a hurry in this slow-paced lifestyle. At the same time, an active, community-based lifestyle and a healthy diet (日常饮食) are very important. Daily walking is their exercise where everyone walks up and down the hillsides. Most continue to grow their own vegetables even as they themselves grow into old age. The diet focuses on vegetables. A little protein — usually fish, as well as olive oil, local yogurt, cheese and traditional flatbread round out the diet. And a glass of red wine (红酒) enjoyed with others.
People help each other out, and seniors remain central to family life. “In town, community and family is important, especially for Marietta Monni, who lives alone at 100,”reports Doane. He joined her for lunch, made by her family who live upstairs.
Nearby, at Giulia Pisanu’s house, we asked this centenarian what she thought the secret to a long life might be. “Don’t be envious,” she replied. “Advice that may not be scientific, but like those celebrated on the walls here, it comes from the wisdom of age,” says Doane.
    4. Why did Seth Doane go to Sardinia?
    A. To go on vacation. B. To carry out interviews.
    C. To help people there out. D. To attend a birthday party.
    5. What mostly attracted Valter Longo to Villagrande?
    A. Its local special diet. B. Its mysterious murals.
    C. Its beautiful landscape. D. Its many centenarians.
    6. What do we know about people living in Sardinia from paragraph 5?
    A. They enjoy living a slow and relaxed life.
    B. They make a living by growing vegetables.
    C. They like to eat meat and drink very much.
    D. They insist on doing hard exercise regularly.
7 What does Giulia Pisanu think is important to live a long life?
    A. Having a hobby. B. Letting go of envy.
    C. Staying with family. D. Being young at heart.
    C
Tashi Hackett rows his boat on the Snake River, south of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. All around him is the great beauty of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. It is a great place for wildlife watchers, hikers, and campers. But Hackett isn’t here for the view; he’s here to help protect the river.
Hackett is one of many volunteers working with Adventure Scientists, an organization that makes use of the skills of experienced outdoor recreationists (游憩者) to help scientists collect much-needed data (数据) on many different research projects.
Organizations like Adventure Scientists play an important role in research. Scientists often may not have enough money or time, which can limit their ability to carry out their work. But laypeople like Hackett can help in many ways. Volunteers for all projects receive training before going out into the field.
Within 10 years, Adventure Scientists’ volunteers have collected data for lots of important research projects around the world. One project collected the largest known microplastics (tiny pieces of plastic) data set ever recorded, showing the worldwide reach of microplastics pollution. Another project collected data from around the world to help Harvard Medical School researchers study antibiotic resistance One present project creates libraries of data about trees in the U.S.
On a recent day, Hackett’s work begins before 8 a.m. and goes on late into the afternoon. Sometimes the weather is perfect; other times it’s far from lovely. One trip had Hackett moving through the forest during a snowstorm. Another time, in late fall, ice made it difficult for him to reach the river and the low temperature prevented his equipment (设备) from working correctly.
But Hackett says he enjoys the chance to give back.“It’s been a great chance to help collect data that’s going to be used for a long time, and to know what the health of the river that I love is.”
    8. What is Hackett doing on the Snake River?
    A. Practicing boating skills.
    B. Collecting data about the river.
    C. Guiding visitors around the river.
    D. Enjoying the beauty of a national forest.
    9. What does the underlined word “laypeople” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
    A. Those who have limited savings.
    B. Those who have no interest in science.
    C. Those who are not experts in one field.
    D. Those who play a central role in research.
    10. How does the author describe Adventure Scientists’ work?
    A. By giving examples. B. By showing differences.
    C. By following time order. D. By providing research results.
    11. Which of the following can best describe Hackett?
    A. Strict and warm-hearted. B. Patient and strong-willed.
    C. Experienced and open-minded. D. Responsible and hard-working.
    D
South African scientists have started working toward one day injecting radioactive material into the horns of rhinos (将放射性物质注入犀牛角) to save the animals from poachers (偷猎者).
While using radioactive material sounds like a radical measure (激进措施), it is trying to deal with an extremely serious problem. Poachers have killed two-thirds of South Africa’s rhinos over the past years. In 2014 alone, 1,215 South African rhinos were killed by poachers. Millions of dollars are spent each year on protecting the animals, with limited success: last year 394 deaths were recorded. Rhino horns are highly popular in some illegal (非法的) markets, selling for up to $100,000 a kilogram.
The big question now is whether or not the rhinos will suffer any pain or experience harmful side effects as a result of injecting such material into their horns. “This is what scientists are trying to work out with a lot of testing,” said Dr Mitzi Klein, the Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’s (ANSTO) scientist. “The most important thing is to protect the rhino and the environment around them, and not hurt the rhino one bit.”
Dr Guy Castley from Griffith University said that any injection into the horn itself won’t hurt because the horn is made up of a material called keratin, which is the same as human nails and hair. “The horn itself does not have any nerves or blood vessels (神经或血管) inside it. So it’s not likely to cause the rhino any discomfort or pain,” he said.
Dr Castley stressed that it’s too early to say if radioactive material will be used and Dr Klein agreed that radiation won’t come near any rhino until they discover a way to put the radiation safely in the horn “... so that it does not spread to the body or hurt anything in the environment.”
“We need to protect rhinos, because we’re in danger of losing them forever. If we can find a way to safely put radiation in the horns, it could end poaching, because it would no longer be safe for people to use horns to make medicine,” Dr Klein said. Sensors could also be used to pick up radioactive material in the horns, making it harder for poachers to send them to other countries.
    12. What is the author mainly talking about in paragraph 2?
    A. Poaching is under effective control.
    B. Rhinos are in a dangerous situation.
    C. The protection of rhinos is rather costly.
    D. Rhinos are very popular in South Africa.
    13. According to Dr Klein, why is lots of testing needed?
    A. To find out what makes up rhino horns.
    B. To decide which medicine is suitable for rhinos.
    C. To examine whether the injection will harm rhinos.
    D. To show that rhino horns are useless in treating illnesses.
    14. What is Dr Castley’s attitude toward using radioactive material?
    A. Careful. B. Satisfied. C. Uncertain. D. Doubtful.
    15. What is the main purpose of the text?
    A. To report a research result on rhinos.
    B. To introduce a possible way to save rhinos.
    C. To stress the importance of stopping poaching.
    D. To explain the ill effects of radioactive material.

    7. What does Giulia Pisanu think is important to live a long life?
    A. Having a hobby. B. Letting go of envy.
    C. Staying with family. D. Being young at heart.
B 5. D 6. A 7. B

B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第一段“Tashi Hackett rows his boat on the Snake River, south of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. All around him is the great beauty of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. It is a great place for wildlife watchers, hikers, and campers. But Hackett isn’t here for the view; he’s here to help protect the river.(Tashi Hackett在怀俄明州杰克逊霍尔以南的斯内克河上划船。在他的周围是美丽的布里杰-提顿国家森林。这里是野生动物观察者、徒步旅行者和露营者的好去处。但哈克特来这里不是为了看风景;他是来保护河流的)”以及第二段“Hackett is one of many volunteers working with Adventure Scientists, an organization that makes use of the skills of experienced outdoor recreationists (游憩者) to help scientists collect much-needed data (数据) on many different research projects.(哈克特是与探险科学家合作的众多志愿者之一,探险科学家是一个利用经验丰富的户外活动人士的技能来帮助科学家收集许多不同研究项目中急需的数据的组织)”可知,Hackett在斯内克河收集有关河流的数据。
根据后文“Volunteers for all projects receive training before going out into the field.(所有项目的志愿者在进入实地之前都要接受培训)”可知,像Hackett这样的志愿者在进入实地之前都要接受培训,所以他们都是外行,所以推测laypeople应是“外行”之意,和C项“Those who are not experts in one field.(不是某一领域的专家)”意思相近。
根据第四段“Within 10 years, Adventure Scientists’ volunteers have collected data for lots of important research projects around the world. One project collected the largest known microplastics (tiny pieces of plastic) data set ever recorded, showing the worldwide reach of microplastics pollution. Another project collected data from around the world to help Harvard Medical School researchers study antibiotic resistance (抗生素抗药性). One present project creates libraries of data about trees in the U.S.(在10年的时间里,探险科学家的志愿者已经为世界各地的许多重要研究项目收集了数据。其中一个项目收集了有史以来最大的已知微塑料(微小的塑料碎片)数据集,显示了微塑料污染的全球范围。另一个项目收集了来自世界各地的数据,以帮助哈佛医学院的研究人员研究抗生素耐药性。目前的一个项目创建了美国树木数据库)”可知,作者是通过举例来描述冒险科学家的工作。故选A项。

Another time, in late fall, ice made it difficult for him to reach the river and the low temperature prevented his equipment (设备) from working correctly.(最近的一天,Hackett的工作从早上8点前开始,一直持续到下午很晚。
A To find out what makes up rhino horns.
B 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据第二段“While using radioactive material sounds like a radical measure (激进措施), it is trying to deal with an extremely serious problem. Poachers have killed two-thirds of South Africa’s rhinos over the past years. In 2014 alone, 1,215 South African rhinos were killed by poachers. Millions of dollars are spent each year on protecting the animals, with limited success: last year 394 deaths were recorded. Rhino horns are highly popular in some illegal (非法的) markets, selling for up to $100,000 a kilogram.(虽然使用放射性物质听起来像是一种激进的措施,但它正试图解决一个极其严重的问题。在过去的几年里,偷猎者杀死了南非三分之二的犀牛。仅2014年一年,就有1215头南非犀牛被偷猎者杀害。每年花费数百万美元用于保护动物,但成效有限:去年有394人死亡。犀牛角在一些非法市场上非常受欢迎,每公斤售价高达10万美元)”可知,第二段主要讲了犀牛的处境很危险,故选B项。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The big question now is whether or not the rhinos will suffer any pain or experience harmful side effects as a result of injecting such material into their horns. “This is what scientists are trying to work out with a lot of testing,” said Dr Mitzi Klein, the Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’s (ANSTO) scientist. “The most important thing is to protect the rhino and the environment around them, and not hurt the rhino one bit.”(现在最大的问题是,将这种物质注射到犀牛的角上,犀牛是否会感到疼痛或产生有害的副作用。澳大利亚核科学与技术组织(ANSTO)的科学家米齐·克莱因博士说:“这就是科学家们试图通过大量测试来解决的问题。”“最重要的是保护犀牛和它们周围的环境,不要伤害犀牛。”)”可知,根据克莱因博士的说法,为了检查注射是否会伤害犀牛,所以需要大量的测试。故选C项。
    【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Dr Castley stressed that it’s too early to say if radioactive material will be used and Dr Klein agreed that radiation won’t come near any rhino until they discover a way to put the radiation safely in the horn(卡斯特利博士强调,现在说是否会使用放射性物质还为时过早,克莱因博士同意,在他们找到一种将辐射安全放入犀牛角的方法之前,辐射不会接近任何犀牛)”可知,卡斯特利博士认为是否会使用放射性物质还为时过早,所以他是小心的。故选A项。
根据第一段“South African scientists have started working toward one day injecting radioactive material into the horns of rhinos to save the animals from poachers.(南非科学家已经开始研究有一天将放射性物质注射到犀牛角中,以从偷猎者手中拯救动物)”以及最后一段““We need to protect rhinos, because we’re in danger of losing them forever. If we can find a way to safely put radiation in the horns, it could end poaching, because it would no longer be safe for people to use horns to make medicine,”(“我们需要保护犀牛,因为我们有永远失去它们的危险。如果我们能找到一种安全地将辐射放入犀角的方法,就可以结束偷猎,因为人们用犀角制药将不再安全,”)”可知,本文主要目的是介绍一种可能拯救犀牛的方法。故选B项。
