Army Spc. Lauren Jahn gets emotional when talking about it — recalling the time she saw an American flag flying outside her hospital room and couldn’t stand to salute it.
"It really hurt," Jahn says, referring to both the physical and mental pain she was going through. "All of the hopes and dreams I had, it takes a while to realize that they’re gone."
Just a few months before that moment in the hospital, Jahn had joined the U.S. Army. She’d made it through basic training mostly unscathed save for some pain in her shins(胫), something she owed to the concentrated running. When she finally decided to see a doctor about the pain, she expected to get a clean bill of health. Instead she got doctor’s orders for an MRI, and a phone call no one likes to get. The doctor said she needed to discuss her results in person.
The day after Thanksgiving in 2016, Jahn found out she had a rare form of bone cancer. Then she had an operation. The following months of recovery were challenging. The single mother of three young children had to fight off depression as she also learned to walk again. She spent six months in a wheelchair.
But it was during this time that Jahn found out about fitted sports— things like wheelchair basketball, seated volleyball and track and field — where rules have been changed slightly to let people with disabilities compete on a level playing field. When she decided to try out archery(箭术), she discovered a new passion in life.
Jahn took home second place in Archery at the 2018 Department of Defense Warrior Games, where CBS News met her. She now has her sights set on qualifying for the Paralympic Games, or even the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
"I want my kids to see that it doesn’t matter what you go through in life, you can still be active, you can still chase your dreams."
    24. How did Jahn feel when her dreams were gone?
    A. Astonished. B. Disappointed.
    C. Hurtful. D. Helpless.
    25. What did Jahn hope to receive while seeing a doctor?
    A. Doctor’s comfort. B. Lessening the pain of shins.
    C. Some bills’ rewards. D. A healthy certificate.
    26. What happened after Jahn had an operation?
    A. She nearly broke down. B. She lost her three children.
    C. She was trapped in a wheelchair. D. She never thought about walking again.
    27. What does the last paragraph suggest?
    A. She gets on well with kids. B. All difficulties are temporary.
    C. She desires to set children an example. D. Life is not easy unless you are active.
    C
While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be "taught" by a digital teacher. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar that appears on the student’s desktop, or smartphone screen, when ordered to come.
The autonomous animation platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show human-like behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach Vector’s "Be sustainable with energy"— a free program for Auckland elementary schools.
Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students’ responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal cues. For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way interaction not only helps attract the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their engagement, and make changes if needed.
Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, "I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver cost-effective, rich, educational experience in the future."
The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, "What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captured their attention." However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon.
    28. What was special for some elementary school students in Auckland?
    A. A digital teacher taught them. B. They first saw something digital.
    C. This was the start of a new school year. D. They could get close to smartphone screen.
    29. What is the benefit of this two-way interaction?
    A. It can smile back. B. It can use microphone.
    C. It can change if necessary. D. It can talk any topic for free.
    30. What’s Ravishankar’s attitude to Will’s replacing Human educators soon?
    A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful.
    C. Unclear. D. Disapproving.
    31. What might be the best title for the passage?
    A. New High-tech Contributes to Education
    B. New Zealand Will Replace Teachers in Classrooms
    C. The World’s First Digital Teacher, a Help to Students
    D. The World’s First Digital Teacher Appears in Classrooms
    D
While elephants born without tusks(长牙) are not unheard of, they normally are made up of just 2 to 6 percent of the population. However, that is not the case at Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, where 33 percent of female elephants born after the country’s civil war ended in 1992, are tuskless.
This is not the first time researchers have observed a serious change in the population of elephant that have suffered severe poaching(偷猎) losses. At the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania, 35% of elephants 25 years or older and 13% of those younger than 25 are now without tusks. A 2008 study published in the African Journal of Ecology found that the number of tuskless females at Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park went from 10.5 percent in 1969 to almost 40 percent in 1989, largely due to illegal hunting for ivory(象牙制品).
Thus far, the result of poaching has largely affected female elephants. Poole explains, "Because males require tusks for fighting, tusklessness has been selected against in males, and very few males are tuskless. For African elephants, tuskless males have a much harder time breeding and do not pass on their genes(基因) as often as tusked males."
However, if the killing of males with the most impressive tusks continues at this pace, it could result in a generation of elephants with much smaller tusks. Poole says, "If poachers select according to tusk size, they will tend to kill older males with very large tusks, therefore taking out of the population of breeding-aged males who also happen to have very big tusks. Those males then no longer pass on their genes for large tusks. In this manner, heavy poaching will select outgenes for large tusks."
The recent ban on ivory in both the US and China should help eliminate, or at least reduce, elephant poaching. However, scientists are not sure how long it will take for the elephants with a higher rate of tuskless females, to reverse the trend.
    32. What is the function of the first paragraph?
    A. Make comparisons. B. Introduce the topic.
    C. Appeal to attention. D. Give readers a surprise.
    33. What may cause tuskless females to increase in Zambia?
    A. Wars’ effect. B. Imperfect management.
    C. Illegal hunting. D. The decrease of population.
    34. What can we learn from what Poole says?
    A. Tuskless elephants are being neglected.
    B. Heavy poaching for large tusks will be forbidden.
    C. Tusklessness influences the life of male elephants.
    D. Older males with very large tusks are soon dying out.
35.What does the underlined word "eliminate" in Paragraph 5 mean?
    A. Remove. B. Decline. C. Compete. D. Unite.

A famous Chinese book I have recently read is The Ordinary World. It’s a realistic novel writing by Lu Yao. This book described how ordinary peasants struggled for fate(命运), or for a better life in the 1970s and 1980s. The heroes in this novel suffered from a lot. However, we overcame all difficulties brave. What I had learned from this book is that though life is tough sometimes, as long as we’re determined to rise above difficult condition, life can be hopeful and colorful. This book encourages me to keep optimistic about life and give me courage to face difficulties. It certainly deserves to read.

    Dear Tom,

I’m glad to hear that you and your family are visiting China during the Spring Festival.

The Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals in China. It is an occasion when family members get together and have a good rest. Before the festival, we clean our houses and decorate them with red couplets and pictures. During the festival, we visit relatives. Children are given lucky money in red paper. In the north of China the special food for the Spring Festival is dumpling.
Please decide which cities you are going to visit and book the hotel rooms in advance. I wish you a pleasant journey in China.

    Yours,

    Li Hua
