    cupling bricks
When senir leaders at tymaker Leg first learned that adults were buying large quantities f their plastic bricks and getting tgether t build Leg creatins f their wn, “they thught it was very strange,” says Smith-Meyer .
“Befre the late 1990s, the cmpany didn’t think their adult fans had value,”says Smith-Meyer.“Leadership actually thught adults werehaving a negative impact n the brand.”Thanks t a handful f emplyees wh wrked t change attitudes inside the cmpany, gne are the days when labels n Leg bxes stated that the cntents were apprpriate nly fr children ages 7 t 12. Leg’s newest marketing mtt is “Adults Welcme.”
Tday Leg is the wrld’s largest and mst prfitable tymaker. The enthusiasm and buying pwer f adult fans f Leg played a majr rle in the cmpany’s rise t the tp. But insiders say the rad frm “kids nly” t “adults welcme” was a lng, uphill climb.
Leg funder Ole Kirk Kristiansen always knew he wanted t market his prducts cmpletely t kids. When Kristiansen started The Leg Grup in 1932, he made wden tys that were intended fr children. In 1946, he began making plastic tys. In 1958, he and his sn develped the first cupling bricks, the basic design f which hasn’t changed much ver the years. They’re even used tgetherwith bricks made tday.
As the cmpany grew ver its first six decades, few imagined that its prducts culd attract as many adults as children. Then attitudes began t shift in the late 1990s and early 2000s when Leg psted its first-ever lss in 1998. By 2003, when it reprted a $238 millin lss, the cmpany was lking seriusly at bankruptcy(破产). “Thse were Leg’s dark days,” McKee says.
In the wake f the crisis, “Everyne suddenly wanted t see what designs I’d been wrking n with adult fans,”McKee says. In August 2005, when Leg CEO Jrgen Vig Knudstrp attended a fan meeting, he saw fr himself the sea f adult supprters. “I see a future where we will be wrking mre clsely tgether,” he recalls. The bming partnership wuld eventually prduce sme f the cmpany’s mst ppular and prfitable themes, including Leg Creatr and Leg’s Ambassadr Netwrk, and the cmpany’s first-ever fficial fan cnference: 2021’s Leg Cn.
“Leg used t treat their adult custmers like gds; tday, they treat them like partners,” McKee says.

    A. was faced with a business crisis
    B.started treating them like gds
    C. gt financial supprt frm them
    D. fund its prducts less attractive t kids
    36. What can we learn frm the passage?
    A. Leg was frced t replace wden tys with plastic nes.
    B. Leg’s basic design f the first cupling bricks are still in use.
    C. Leg’s partnership with gifted kids prduced ppular themes.

Many children’s hspitals already have strytelling prgrammes that aim t cheer up patients. But new researchsuggests that strytelling als has physilgical (生理的) benefits. “Until nw, the psitive evidence fr strytelling was based n ‘cmmn sense’ that interacting with the child may distract, entertain and reduce psychlgical suffering,” said Dr Jrge Mll, f D’Or Institute fr Research and Educatin (IDOR), Brazil. “But there was a lack f a slid scientific basis.”
“During strytelling, smething happens that we call ‘narrative transprtatin’. The child, thrugh fantasy, can experience sensatins and thughts that transprt him r her t anther wrld, a place that is different frm the hspital rm, and is, therefre, far frm the unpleasant cnditins f hspitalizatin,” says Guilherme Brckingtn.
The team, based at IDOR and the Federal University f ABC, Brazil, studied 81 children between the ages f tw and seven, all f whm were in the intensive care unit (ICU) at a hspital in Sã Paul. A grup f 41 children each had a sessin with a stryteller, lasting 25 t 30 minutes. A cntrl grup f 40 children each had the same amunt f time with the same prfessinals, but they tld riddles instead. Befre and after the sessins, the team tk saliva (唾液)samples frm each child and assessed their pain level. The saliva samples allwed the researchers t measure levels f the hrmne crtisl, which is related t stress, and the hrmne xytcin, which plays a rle in empathy (共情).
Bth grups f children benefited frm the sessins: they all had less crtisl and mre xytcin in their saliva, suggesting they were less stressed, and they reprted less pain and discmfrt. Hwever, the results were twice as strng fr the strytelling grup as the cntrl grup. At the end f the sessins, the children als tk part in a wrd-assciatin exercise including wrds like ‘hspital’, ‘nurse’ and ‘dctr’. The team said that children frm the cntrl grup said “this is the bad wman wh cmes t give me an injectin” in respnse t the pictures f a dctr r a nurse, while the strytelling grup said “this is the wman wh cmes t cure me”.
“I cnsider this study t be ne f the mst imprtant I have participated in, due t its ptential direct impact n practices in the hspital envirnment, aiming at the relief f human suffering. We intend t supprt vlunteering devted t the nble activity f strytelling, nw with mre slid scientific evidence,” said Mll.

We ften wrk t save the mst charismatic (有超凡魅力的)species in the wrld. Is it time t thinkbeynd pandas and tigers?
    the American burying beetle
Take a gd lk at theAmerican burying beetle. Tday it is assessed as critically endangered. Like the tiger, the beetle is range and black; like the tiger, the beetle is decreasing in number. The tiger is an instantly recgnizable symbl f species cnservatin, but mst peple aren’t familiar with the beetle.
This phenmenn is called the dminatin f flagship species where rganizatins use charismatic rganisms (生物) such as tigers t increase supprt and funding fr cnservatin. That’s largely because humans are attracted t large-bdied animals with frward-facing eyes, humanlike traits that make such species mre relatable. As a result, many less well-knwn rganisms fail t get the supprt and funding t ensure their survival even thugh they play an imprtant rle in the ecsystem.
Which species culd be saved? They may nt charm us with fuzzy paws and puppy dg eyes, but many ignred species deserve sme lve. The wrld needs t better recgnize the cntributins f these underdgs rather than “nly spending mney n cl species,” says cnservatin scientist Bb Smith.
I suspect that mst f us wh care abut animals culd agree n this: Charisma is in the eye f the behlder. In that case, can’t we braden the list f animals cnsidered ppular and even beautiful? University f Kent cnservatinist Bb Smith says we can—and there’s a name fr them: Cinderella species. These are mstly threatened animals that are still very ppular with the public yet are typically verlked as flagships. Smith is cnvinced that “less well-knwn and less ppular species can still be gd flagships with mre marketing effrt.”
In a recent study, Smith settled anther myth abut pster animals: that they dn’t help publicize the wrld’s mst species-rich and threatened places. A priritizatin (优先次序) mdel Smith created shwed that the mst imprtant cnservatin ht spts wrldwide als are hme t mre than 500 flagship and Cinderella species, and that drawing mre attentin t Cinderella species culd bst funding and public campaigns fr habitat prtectin.
Let’s be clear, thugh: It’s still OK t rt fr pandas and tigers. “The reasn I gt int cnservatin is that I liked these species,” Smith says. “That is fair enugh. But it’s ur jb as cnservatinists t try t inspire peple t lve ther species t.”
    42. Accrding t the passage, peple are unfamiliar with the American burying beetle mainly because ________.
    A. it is critically endangeredB. it is decreasing in number
    C. it is nt a flagship speciesD. it is nt instantly recgnizable

    A. take cntrl fB. get clse t
    C. shw supprt frD. check up n

    阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
Managing Star Perfrmers in High-Pressure Situatins
It is generally accepted that success prduces cnfidence, and cnfidence increases the ability t handle pressure. While success can indeed prduce cnfidence, it can als increase multiply expectatins and raise pressure t unhealthy levels ver time.
Even the greatest perfrmers feel pressure mre than yu might think. Researcher Geir Jrdet studied 366 kicks frm 37 penalty shtuts held at the wrld’s three largest sccer turnaments. His unusualfinding was that superstars scred nly 65% f the time vs. the 74% verall average. Even mre striking, they scred far less than players wh wuld later g n t win the same awards. These “future stars” scred 89% f the time.In shrt, players wh have the skill but nt yet the status (地位) that cmes with winning a majr award perfrmed far better than thse wh had bth the skill and status. Status, it turns ut, can be a burden.
Leading r caching highly successful perfrmers thrugh a high-pressure event requires reducing the verwhelming (压倒性的) baggage that they may attach t failure. Yu can start t accmplish this by asking ne key questin: What are the things that are mst imprtant t yu—that are essential t yur being—and wn’t change regardless f the utcme?
On May 26, 2021, utstanding tennis player Nami Osaka annunced n Twitter that due t her mental health, she wuld nt d any press interviews at the French Open. The vlume (量) f tasks and distractins that surrund perfrmance can dramatically increase pressure. And as success and status build, s des vlume. The requests fr Osaka’s time at the French Open in 2021 were vastly greater than they were in 2016 during her first Grand Slam event.
In respnse t the increase in vlume, Osaka—like all f us—had tw chices: accmmdate mre r remve the vlume that was creating the mst pressure. She chse the latter, which is exactly the right respnse t pressure that cmes frm vlume.
Few f us will ever knw the pressure f carrying the expectatins f 300 millin peple int a physically and mentally demanding envirnment. But, thrugh thughtful cnversatins that aim t keep imprtance in viewpint and simplify vlume, we can help ur wn stars carry the burden f success a little mre lightly.
    68. What negative effects can success have?
    69. Accrding t the passage, why may superstars perfrm wrse than “future stars”?
    70. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and
    explain why.
Tennis player Nami Osaka annunced that she wuld nt d any press interviews at the French Open because she didn’t feel well physically.
71.Hw d yu deal with high-pressure situatins in yur daily life?
    (In abut 40 wrds)
