    Wh was Mark Twain?Mark Twain was brn in Flrida n Nvember 30th, 1835. He was brught up in Hannibal, Missuri, alng the Mississippi River. He is best knwn fr his nvels set in his byhd wrld n the river, such as The Adventures f Tm Sawyer and The Adventures f Huckleberry Finn.
    Wh was Mark Twain?Twain lved the river s much that even his pen name is abut the river. “Twain” is an ld wrd fr “tw”. The phrase “mark twain” means that the water is tw fathms (六英尺) deep. The authr’s real name was Samuel Langhrne Clemens.
    THE MILLION POUND BANK NOTE
    Narratr: Tw rich brthers, Rderick and Oliver, have made a bet. Oliver believes that with a millin-pund bank nte a man culd live a mnth in Lndn. His brther Rderick dubts it. They see a pr yung man walking utside their huse. It is Henry Adams.Rderick: Yung man, wuld yu step inside a mment, please?Henry: Wh? Me, sir?Rderick: Yes, yu.Servant: (pening a dr) Gd mrning, sir.Wuld yu please cme in?(Henry enters the huse.)Rderick: Hw d yu d, : Adams. Henry Adams.Oliver: Cme and sit dwn, Mr Adams.Henry: Thank yu.
    ACT 1, SCENE 3
    Rderick: Yu’re an American?Henry: That’s right, frm San Francisc.Rderick: May we ask what yu’re ding in this cuntry and what yur plans are?Henry: Well, I can’t say that I have any plans. As a matter f fact, I landed in Britain by accident.Oliver: Hw is that pssible?Henry: Well, I had my wn bat. Abut a mnth ag, I was sailing, and twards night I fund myself carried ut t sea by a strng wind. The next mrning I was sptted by a ship.Oliver: And it was the ship that brught yu t England.Henry: Yes. I went t the American cnsulate t seek help, but…Anyway, I didn’t dare t try again. (The brthers smile at each ther.)Rderick: Well, yu mustn’t wrry abut that. It’s an advantage.
    Henry: I’m afraid I dn’t quite fllw yu, sir.Rderick: Tell us, what srt f wrk did yu d in America?Henry: I wrked fr a mining cmpany. Culd yu ffer me wrk here?Rderick: Patience. If yu dn’t mind, may I ask yu hw much mney yu have?Henry: Well, t be hnest, I have nne.Oliver: (happily) What luck! Brther, what luck!Henry: Well, it may seem lucky t yu but nt t me! If this is yur idea f sme kind f jke, I dn’t think it’s very funny. Nw if yu'll excuse me, I ught t be n my way.Rderick: Please dn’t g. Yu mustn’t think we dn’t care abut yu. Oliver, give him the letter.Oliver: Yes, I was abut t g get the letter. Wait!(getting it frm a desk and giving it t Henry) The letter.
    Henry: (taking it carefully) Fr me?Rderick: Fr yu. (Henry starts t pen it.) Oh, n, yu’d better nt pen it. Yu can’t pen it until tw ’clck.Henry: Oh, this is silly.Rderick: Nt silly. There’s mney in it.Henry: Oh, n. I dn’t want yur charity. I just want a jb that earns an hnest incme.Rderick: We knw yu’re hard-wrking. That’s why we’ve given yu the letter. (t the servant)Shw Mr Adams ut.Henry: Well, why dn’t yu explain what this is all abut?Rderick: Yu’ll sn knw. In exactly an hur and a half.Servant: This way, sir.Rderick: Nt until 2 ’clck.
