There are millions of people throughout the world who are either born blind or have become blind over the course of their lifetime. It is unfair to take away the visual (视觉的) beauty of the world from these people. Doctor Humayun has created the world’s first bionic (仿生学的) eye that could change the life of every blind people in the world.
Doctor Mark Humayun is a well respected professor at the Doheny Eye Institute California. He has been working for years on creating a bionic eye that would allow blind people to see images just like a normal person does. The bionic eye is actually an eye that has been built in a small video camera.
The test results show the bionic eye has given blind patients the amazing ability to see the scientists doing the tests. But the images are still blurry (模糊的) and we need much work before the eye actually becomes a regular implant (植入物) into blind people. Humayun believes that he can go into production with the bionic eye over the next three to five years.
A closer look at the bionic eye is amazing. The patient wears a special set of eyeglasses. All the signals are passed to the implanted eye. It’s done by wireless technology. Humayun has created an invention that could change the lives of millions of people. Imagine a world in which someone would no longer have to fear about being blind. This could be considered a technological achievement.

ChatGPT is back in the headlines! Open AI, the company behind the popular chatbot, has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4.
On March 14, GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than the previous GPT-3.5. One of its best new features is that it can understand pictures. For example, if you show a picture of a phone using the wrong charger (充电器), GPT-4 can tell why the picture looks strange or funny.
But GPT-4’s developments don’t stop there. The new language model can code (用代码编写) classic games like Tetris (俄罗斯方块) in a matter of minutes, and produce the code and layout (布局) for a website based on a hand-made drawing. It can also change the tone (语气) and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4 is much easier for students to cheat (作弊) than the older GPT at passing tests, which may worry teachers. According to CNN, GPT-4 did really well on a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers. But GPT-3.5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.
GPT-4 will also see greater use as a tool to power other apps and services. For example, the language learning app Duolingo plans to use GPT-4 in their upcoming Duolingo Max function. Users can learn languages by talking with AI. Another app, Be My Eyes, will have a digital assistant (数字助手) to help blind people better understand the world around them. The government of Iceland also plans to use GPT-4 to protect the Icelandic language.
There are still problems with the new language model, however. GPT-4 still struggles to get completely correct answers, especially with newer information after September 2021. GPT-4 also sometimes “hallucinates (产生幻觉)”, meaning that it will insist that wrong information is true.
41.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.GPT-3.5 cannot understand pictures. B.GPT-4 can create funny pictures.
C.GPT-4 can tell if a phone is recharging. D.GPT-4 can show the result in a fun way.42.The underlined phrase “in a matter of minutes” in paragraph 3 shows that ________.
A.games like Tetris are easy to code
B.anyone can code games using GPT-4
C.GPT-4 can code games like Tetris quickly
D.hand-made drawings help GPT-4 work better43.What worry does GPT-4 bring to teachers?
A.It can change tones based on a user’s input.
B.It may help students cheat on tests easily.
    C.Students will lose their competitiveness.
D.It will take the place of teachers in the future.44.How will the Duolingo Max users get help from GPT-4?
A.AI can help them make personalized study plans.
B.Blind people can communicate through the app.
C.They can practice languages by talking with AI.
D.They can find many dying languages on the app.

During the Spring and Autumn period of the ancient China, there was a musician named Yu Boya. He was skilled in playing the guqin. However, he always felt that he didn’t have the highest level, so he decided to take a boat trip to Penglai Island in the East China Sea. There, Yu Boya saw the surging waves(汹涌的波涛)hitting the rocks, and the seabirds flying up and down and singing happily and loudly. At that moment, a creative idea went through his mind. He managed to use the guqin to bring the beauty of nature and the touching sounds of the music together. Unluckily, no one could understand and appreciate(欣赏)what the music was about. He felt very lonely with a great pity as a result.
One day, Yu Boya saw an old woodcutter listening to his music carefully on the seaside and then asked him to get in his boat. He played the music about the high mountain. The woodcutter described a picture of Mountain Tai in his mind. When Yu Boya played another piece of music to show the surging waves, the woodcutter seemed to watch a wild and broad sea without boundaries. Yu Boya screamed excitedly, “My dear friend, Zhong Ziqi, you are the only confidant(知己)that understands me and my works!”A few years later, Zhong Ziqi passed away. Yu Boya cut off all the strings(琴弦)and stopped playing the guqin after he heard the news.
There are too few close friends as Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi did in the world. Yu Rang, a famous writer in the Warring States period, once said, “A true man is ready to die for those who know the value of him.” Su Shi, another famous writer in the Song dynasty, found no one could understand him in his difficult times, describing himself as a lonely wild bird on a wasted sand island. It means he preferred to live alone if he couldn’t find any confidant. Being a confidant has nothing to do with age, distance as well as wealth. He is the one who is always willing to share your joy and sadness. In some ways, a confidant can understand your every act and read your hidden meanings. Whether old or young, a confidant is hard to find. Everyone will never feel sorry for himself if he has a confidant in his life!
45.Yu Boya went on his trip to Penglai Island mainly to ________.
A.find his close friend B.improve musical skills
C.watch seabirds flying D.enjoy the natural beauty46.Why did Yu Boya feel lonely in Paragraph 1?

Some kids have creative minds. They could manage to create amazing things with their simple understandings.
    Braille
Braille, a system used by blind people for reading, was actually invented by Louis Braille (1809-1852). He was just three when he suffered (遭受) a serious eye injury. Not long after that, he became completely blind. He started tracing his finger over raised letters. At the age of 12, he learned the method of silent communication. And three years later, he finally came up with Braille.
    Christmas Lights
Before the invention of Christmas lights, people used candles to decorate a Christmas tree. This often led to terrible accidents of branches catching up the fire. When the electric lights were made, people were scared about electricity sparks (电火花) burning down their houses. Finally, in 1917, 15-year-old Albert Sadacca created an affordable set of Christmas lights. These lights are now a part of every holiday season.
    Trampoline (蹦蹦床)
George Nissen was a teenage gymnast. His coach created “bouncing rig” that helped him create power and then perform a somersault (空翻). It was at first made of scrap steel and tire inner tubes. This was later improved by George and called “trampoline”. In 1950, gas stations bought trampolines to use as jump centers for the kids to play on while their parents got their cars refueled (加油).
    Toy Truck
Robert Patch was just 5 years old when he used a few shoe boxes and bottle caps to create a vehicle that could be turned into a truck. His father was a patent (专利) lawyer. He patented this design in his son’s name. By the time, Robert was six, and his patent application was approved. He still is the youngest patent holder in the world.

In the past, African penguins (企鹅) laid their eggs in holes dug in their own guano (粪便). But in the 1800s, most of the guano was shipped by traders to the UK, where it was used to make plants grow better. Since then, many penguins have nested (筑巢) in the open. It’s easy for them to get heatstroke (中暑). Shaun Welman, an animal expert, has seen penguins sitting with their eyes closed, heads drooping (下垂) and mouths open in the burning midday heat, trying to protect their eggs.
Because penguins evolved (进化) to keep heat in cold water, they can easily overheat on land. Usually, penguins leave their nests regularly to cool off in the sea. But without proper holes, this leaves their eggs unprotected.
“Now the African penguin is on the endangered species list, mainly because of human,” Welman says. Since 1900, the African penguin population has dropped from three million to only 48,000.
Luckily, a team of researchers seems to have found a way. Over the past years, the team has put more than 1 ,500 handmade ceramic (陶瓷的) nest boxes in five areas where the penguins live, including Bird Island in Algoa Bay, South Africa, which is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining African penguins. Looking like small round houses, the double-walled ceramic nests can keep African penguins cool.
The ceramic nests remain around 1℃ lower than a penguin’s resting body temperature, which is about 37℃. “The nests are so useful,” Welman says. “Even if adults had to leave nests for some reason, their eggs would never be at any risk of overheating.” In an experiment, the team recorded ground temperatures of nearly 51℃ outside a ceramic nest box, while only 23℃ inside.
Welman adds that African penguins, which nest in the open, will be increasingly influenced by their environment as the climate (气候) changes.

Exchanges of technology such as China’s Four Great Inventions have changed the world’s development forever. The Four Great Inventions are the compass (指南针), gunpowder, paper-making and printing.
    Compass
It was a great gift to the world from ancient China. Before it was invented, people on the sea had to depend on the stars to find direction. After it was invented, the oceans were open to travel. And many new discoveries were made with the help of it. It reached Europe around the 13th century.
    Gunpowder
It is said that in the 3rd century a Chinese man wrote about how to make it. At first, it was used for making fireworks. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, people began to use it in wars. The method of making it was brought to the Arab (阿拉伯的) world and Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries.
    Paper-making
China was the first country in the world to make paper. During the Western Han Dynasty (202 B.C. — 9 A.D.), paper was made in some places in China. It was developed in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 A.D.— 220 A.D.) by Cai Lun. He made paper with bark (树皮), ropes, rags (旧布) and so on. Before it was invented, the ancient Chinese carved (雕刻) characters on animal bones and stones. They also wrote them on bamboo and wooden sticks. This technology spread to India in the mid-600s, to Egypt during the early 900s, and finally to Europe around the 12th century.
    Printing
It was developed in 1041—1048 in the Song Dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng carved characters on pieces of clay (黏土) and wood. Then he put ink on them. After the characters were printed on paper, the pieces of clay or wood could be used again. Around the 15th century, this technology spread to Europe.

The invention of barcodes(条形码)is based on a very simple idea. We only need to give each product a specific number and print it. 62 We could simply print the number itself. But this can cause problems. For example, an unclearly printed “seven” could look like a “one” to a computer. It’s also true for “three” and “eight”. 63 We need a better way of printing numbers so that they can be read correctly at high speeds. That’s the problem barcodes solve.
Each number in a barcode is shown by seven blocks of the same size. These are colored either black or white to show the number zero to nine. For example, the number “one” is shown in turn by two white stripes(条), two black stripes, two white stripes, and one black stripe. 64
A barcode includes different parts and each one provides a specific meaning. The first part of a barcode tells you the country where the product was made. For example, 690—692 is the barcode for China. 65 The final part is about the product itself. This is how barcodes work.
A.Then computers can read it directly.
B.All information can be shown by barcodes.
C.The next part tells you who produced the product.
D.And “nine” looks similar to “six” if you turn it upside down.
E.Even if you turn it upside down, it isn’t similar to any other number.

You may think that inventions are far away from your everyday life. But in fact almost everyone can invent. It’s just that they do not recognize that their ideas could be the start of an invention.
Once inventors see their ideas have some practical value they don’t let them slip away.
For example, the inventor of the dishwasher American Josephine Cochrane loved to give dinner parties. But she found it took long to wash her dishes by hand and too many of them broke. She decided that a machine could do the job faster and with fewer mistakes. So in 1886 she set out to make one for herself.
Cochrane’s most wonderful inventions are created to solve the problem. So the first and most important step is to find the problem.
You can start by looking at what is wrong with the things you are using now. You can ask grandparents or neighbors if they remember ever saying: “I wish someone would invent something for ...” Or you can look at people in different areas — such as on the street or at school. Then you might notice situations or things in need of improvement. Remember to record your ideas and work. This will help you develop your invention and protect (保护) it when it is completed.
The next step is to think about possible solutions. An invention is a new way of solving a problem. So think of many varied (各种各样的) and unusual ways. You can often come up with a solution to a problem by looking at it from a different angle (角度) or thinking about it in a new way.
And the hardest part of inventing even for a lot of inventors is finding a problem and coming up with a solution. Once you have an idea you can always get help to build your invention.
This problem-solving technique can also work in your everyday lives. So why not try it in your studies, in your relationship with others or even in the way you look at the world?

Anything is possible when you have the right people there to help you. We always need a friend to stand behind us, especially when we’re in trouble. What is the true friendship for you? Bao Shuya and Guan Zhong set a good example.
Guan and Bao were good friends. Guan came from a poor family. When he and Bao did business together, Guan put less money into the business but took more out in the end. People around Bao were very angry about this. But Bao said that Guan did so because he was poor, not because he was greedy(贪婪的). During the war, Guan secretly left the army three times. Others considered him a coward(胆小鬼). But Bao said Guan left because he needed to look after his aged mother, not because he was a coward.
Later, Guan served Prince Jiu while Bao served Prince Xiaobai. These two princes fought to be the king of the State(国家)of Qi, and Prince Xiaobai won. The new king wanted Bao to be the Prime Minister, but he said Guan could better help the king rule the state. The king accepted his advice and chose Guan as the Prime Minister. Finally, with the help of Guan, Qi became a great state.

    The Bird Mask
Today, doctors know a lot about how to stop germs(病菌) from spreading. They suggest people cover their mouths when they cough. Washing your hands often also helps.
However, people haven’t always known about germs. For many years, even doctors didn’t really understand how illnesses spread. They did many things to avoid getting sick. Some doctors even tried dressing like birds.
In 1619, the French doctor, Charles, de Lorme, invented a special uniform. He hoped it could protect doctors who were treating plague(瘟疫) patients. The uniform had a long coat, gloves, boots(靴子) and a hat.
The doctors also carried sticks so they wouldn’t have to touch the patients. The most special part of the uniform was the mask(面具).
The mask made the doctors look like birds. It had a beak(鸟嘴) that was about 15cm long. There were also two eye holes cowered in glass and two nostril(鼻孔) holes.
At that time, doctors believed the plague was spread by bad air. Any air that had a bad smell was dangerous. So the doctors put flowers in the beak of their masks. They believed this could stop them from breathing the bad air and they wouldn’t get sick because of the plague.
Did it work? Well, not really. Certainly the germs sometimes traveled through the air, and the flowers weren’t able to stop them. Many doctors still got sick by breathing through the nostril holes in their masks.
Some forms of plague only spread through certain animals such as mice. The doctors’ uniform helped to protect them from this danger. However, largely the coat, gloves, boots and hat did the job, not the bird mask.

The erhu is one of the most representative Chinese instruments. It has a long history of more than 1,000 years. The exact time of its development is unclear, although it is widely accepted to have originated during the Tang Dynasty. As a very expressive instrument, the erhu is very popular in folk music performances.
The name of this instrument has two characters, namely “二” and “胡”. The first character is thought to refer to its two-stringed(两弦的) design. The second one shows that it belongs to the huqin family.
Although it is known as the Chinese violin, the erhu is quite different from the Western violin. It has a long neck that looks like a stick, with two tuning pegs(调音弦轴) at the top of the neck. At its bottom, you will find a small soundbox covered in python skin(蟒蛇皮) on its front end. The bow is placed between its two strings. Traditionally, the two strings are made of silk, but metal strings are more often used now. There are many kinds of wood used to make the erhu. While playing, a performer usually sits with the bottom of the erhu on his or her left upper leg.
The tone of the erhu is very much like a human voice. Besides, it can copy many natural sounds, such as birdsong. Horse Racing and The Moon Reflected in the Second Spring (Erquan Yingyue) are the classic erhu music.
