例如,他在描写上楼时,不能写“I am going upstairs”,而只能直接写“on the second floor”;也不能用反映个人意见内涵的词语,例如,要说“大楼”就要用陈述事实的“large building”,而不能用含有感情的表达“a magnificent building”。
①It was beginning to snow, and snowflakes were blinding my eyes.
②The sun was breaking through the blanket of mist.
③Summer sees the mountains turn bright green with growing rice. During autumn, these same mountains are flash gold, and in winter they are covered in sheets of white frost.
④A little way off was a little brook, rushing and sparkling along between green banks.

One night, after reading one of the hundreds of parenting books I’ve read, I was feeling a little guilty because the book had described some parenting strategies I hadn’t used in a while. The main strategy was to talk with your child and use those three magic words: ”I love you.“ It had stressed over and over that children need to know that unconditionally you really love them.
I went upstairs to my son’s bedroom and knocked on the door. As l knocked, all I could hear were his drums. I knew he was there but he wasn’t answering. So I opened the door and, sure enough, there he was sitting with his earphones on, listening to a tape and playing his drums. After I leaned over to get his attention, I said to him, “Tim, have you got a second? ”
He said, “Oh sure, Dad. I’m always good for one.” We then sat down and after about 15 minutes and a lot of small talk, I just looked at him and said, “Tim, I really love the way you play drums.”
He said, ”Oh, thanks, Dad, I appreciate it.“
I walked out of the door and said, ”See you later! "As I was walking downstairs, it occurred to me that I went up there with a certain message and had not delivered it. I felt it was really important to get back up there and have another chance to say those three magic words.

I sit on the edge of my bed, faint smiles sliding across my face, as I sort through old photographs. I hold each memory briefly in my hands before dropping them onto the pile in my lap and searching for the next happy moment to remember. Each picture brings up feelings deep within me.
As I relive the memories, I can't help but notice one photo in particular buried deep in the box. The picture at first glance is lovely. The sun was shining with not a cloud to be seen. I was sting with my arm around a happy-looking girl, her arm rested casually on my shoulders. As I focus on the happy girl, the smile that covers my face becomes a frown. It is Amy Soule, my now ex-best friend. A terrible pang (一阵剧痛) of regret flashes through me, and I feel tightness in my throat.
Our decline in friendship began with different interests. She wanted to go to the mall and shop, while I preferred to watch old movies in my spare time. Soon the only time I saw her was when we exchanged a hurried hello in the busy school halls between classes. No more notes were passed behind the teacher's back, and my parent's phone bill became much cheaper. She found a new group of friends, and so did I. Before I had a chance to repair the friendship, she moved away, causing the crack to become an uncrossable rift.
I made excuses for not keeping in touch. It was too far to visit, too long of a drive. I knew that was not the truth, but I was too nervous to pick up the phone and call. Eventually, the rift grew too large to bridge. Amy had left and she had taken a huge chunk of my heart with her.
I stand up and pull myself back into the now. Glancing up at my calendar, I remember that Amy's birthday is around the corner. In fact, we were born in the same room, two days apart. We started so close and ended up so far. This bittersweet memory causes me to smile despite my feelings of regret.

The Dog Who Saved Our Family
We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines five years ago. He was a standard poodle(狮子狗)born on Valentine’s Day in 2017, and came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from an out-of-state raiser who posted the news on the social network. Our only request was that he have a calm behavior, able to bear the pushing and hugging of our eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.
We were a sweet little family:me,my husband, and our children, Sophie and Jake. But for years I’d felt as if we wouldn’t really be complete until we had a dog. Also, my husband worked in a business company and had to travel some 200 days a year for his job, and I knew I’d feel safer with a large animal sleeping by the door.
When we opened the box, the last piece of our puzzle fell into place. With his black hair and intelligent eyes,Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm of my hand, his big paws lapping over the sides. He was also a little bit scared. As I pulled him close,I felt his heart pound and wondered if we’d done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next and who should have the right to take a bath for him.
Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his Kong toy or roll around the living room floor. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.

Life never really turns out the way we expect it to. We have dreams and expectations. And dream-come-true stories are everywhere — except, it may seem, in our own lives.
As a child, Barbara never quite found the bond with her parents that all children need. Her father left the family early, and her mother did menial jobs.
“I couldn’t let my life keep me from caring about other people,” she says. “Maybe it’s unfair or just the way it turns out for people, but I still have a son.”
Barbara raised her son the best she knew how and “he turned out pretty well,” she says, smiling. And after the hard years of making ends meet and giving him a good start, she made a career change.
“I never thought I was supposed to feel sorry for myself,” she says. “And I like people.”
Barbara works as an in-home caregiver for elderly people in their last year of life. She spends 10-hour days, six days a week, with people who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, sometimes sleeping on their sofa when they are afraid to spend a night alone. Most don’t have families close by, and Barbara becomes the person they rely on for everything: meals, bathing, bathroom duties, daily walks if they can, mental exercises like crossword puzzles and re-learning family faces.
She only charges what the family can afford and only works with one client at a time. “They become the family I never had, over and over again,” she says, laughing.
The spaces left empty in Barbra’s childhood are filled with memories shared with her from lives fading away in the dusk. For 30 years, she has been making people feel good at a time when most would just be waiting to die, alone and unnoticed. When seeing their faces when they are with Barbara, you’d think the last years were the best.
“I’ve found something I never had,” Barbara says. “We make each other happy. So I try to give them what they want most.”

As this term began, I found a new student in my class named Ian Bonus, 16 years old. He was silent, always doing business alone. From his file, I learned that Ian was born in Korea, and spent all his childhood there until his family moved to England. It wasn’t as smooth and easy as he imagined. He had to learn and speak a new language so as to communicate with others. When at school, he tended to avoid crowds. He usually tried every possible means to keep his mouth shut up, even in class. Besides, after class, he didn’t join any clubs or activities even though everyone around him invited him to have a try.
At the beginning, I thought Ian was just a little shy at his age especially in a new place. However, later he still didn’t say a single word when classmates got along well. Having ever dealt with such similar situation myself, I felt I had the suitable experience and the right responsibility to encourage him to melt into our class. Finally, a chance came. One day, in my class, it was Ian’s turn to make a short speech as other students did regularly. But he just stood up, saying nothing. Then I could feel his face red with embarrassment. Next class, we had a P.E. lesson on the court. Again, he didn’t join, just sitting on the bench watching others play. Learning that he was fond of sports and was actually a very athletic and energetic person, I felt a strong desire to persuade him to play together. With this thought in mind, I walked over and sat aside Ian.

1.Again I climbed the stairs, knocked on the door and opened it. Entering the room, I said with a determined look, “Tim, I want to let you know exactly how I feel. I just wanted you to know I love you, and I don’t know why I hold back on something so important.” Hearing what I said, surprised and overwhelmed, he was frozen for a while. And then he walked slowly towards me, rubbing his hands nervously. As he whispered that he loved me too, we hugged together firmly with tears welling up in our eyes. I think what Tim taught me that night is that the only way you can understand the real meaning and purpose of love is to be willing to pay the price. You have to go out there and risk sharing it.

At last, I lay my hands on an old picture frame I have had forever. I pick up the fallen photo of Amy and me, snapping it into the frame. Praying that this framed photograph will prompt her to take a sudden trip back to our happy moment, I write a simple note, saying “Happy birthday, Amy!”
I stick the note under the edge of the photo frame and search for Amy’s address. Thankfully I make it. I hold the frame tightly in my arms, determined not to let this golden chance slip through my fingers. “It’s not much, but it’s a start,” I said to myself, “and the space between us is already smaller.” This time I will not hesitate to be the one to reach out and build a bridge. It may be hard but fixing a broken friendship will leave it stronger than before.  (150 words)

Swiftly I got up from my bed. I opened the door and found Max was running around the living room, trying to let all the things fall down. These abnormal behaviors really confused me while it also made me a little afraid.
At that time,Max ran towards me. He firmly grabbed my trousers and motioned me to the kitchen. As I approached the kitchen, I could obviously smell a strong burning scent and instantly knew what had happened. When I saw the fierce fire in the kitchen, I dashed into my children’s room like an arrow, waking them up at my maximum voice. Rushing out of the house together, I called 911 and asked our neighbors for help at the same time. Fortunately both my family and my house were saved. Thanks to our smart Max, we did escape from death.

I posted Barbara’s story online to call on children to visit their parents. The response to my post was positive. Many people told me they were moved by the story and told me about their experiences. Some people said that they rarely visited their parents because they were so busy at work. When their parents died, they felt very sad and pitiful, but it was too late. Others were happy to tell me that they were inspired by her story, and they now often visit their parents, who are very happy.

He was moved and told me that the reason was his lack of confidence to speak English in front of others and his fear of being teased. Then I encouraged him to seize every chance to practice and later we decided on some useful tips.
The next morning, Ian volunteered to step onto the platform to make up for the speech he missed the day before. “Hello, everyone. I’m Ian Bonus from Korea. Before my speech, I’d like to express my sincere thanks to you all, especially our teacher.” Then he finished a brilliant speech fluently. Since then, whether on the court or during speeches, confident smiles were always on his face.
